the great thing is, Mel was ALWAYS making Jack mess up by making him laugh.. he did it dozens of times on the show's run. Jack and Mel were very close friends and loved to screw with each other all the time. We are lucky that they did it on film :)
they should do a movie about jack benny and have kevin spacey play him..he looks exactly like he did back then , and would probably do a great job of it !
Very funny clip! Today being July 10, 2011 marks the 22nd anniversary of Mel Blanc's death. Thankfully there's lots of Jack Benny radio and TV shows available in addition to many, many cartoons on DVD showcasing Mel's talents. In response to a previous comment...the cat was named Sylvester...he's the one who often said "Sufferin' Succotash". Mel only did the voice of Elmer Fudd a couple of times. Arthur Q. Bryan did the voice in the majority of the cartoons.
And Mel really was the voice of Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, and the cat that said, "Sufferin' Succotash," Elmer Fudd, and a lot of other great cartoon characters! He was multi talented!
Thanks for uploading this, I'm in my 30s and I think Jack Benny was great, so nice to see some comedy that isn't topical+political that can be appreciated now. Jack knew how to surround himself with talent that was the best at their craft
That was hilarious. It doesn't look like Mel was expecting that answer. What did he say after that though. "So it looks like you gave up that lousy ????"
@rathraven1313 Ahh, thank you for that information. I'm a bit of a new Benny fan. I discovered some of his material about two years ago. The Christmas shopping episode with Mel Blanc is still my favorite. I'm guessing Jack called it a fiddle because if you call it a violin, you might have to pay more for one. :)
That's okay, 'hwy'; I've seen the complete episode, and it doesn't feature the original commercials [Don Wilson delivered an "integrated" comedy commercial for Luckies at 3:55- unfortunately, it was sliced out from this kinescope].
@Juliaflo - I have the photo he signed filed away for safekeeping. It is one of my biggest treasures! When he was commenting during his slideshow presentation, he kept looking at the audience as we laughed. I think he was just as entertained as we were. He enjoyed the fact that WE were enjoying his show. I'll never forget this man-never.
This is from a live November 1951 episode; ason radio, Jack always made sure Mel had a featured role in his TV shows, not just because he was a great voice actor, he was a DAMN GOOD actor, period!
I can't offer you a five spot as 'paisley' did,, 'hwy', but I can welcome your return with a BIG GRIN....
@fromthesidelines Thanks Barry! I could only use this part of the show because it seemed to have copyrighted music most everywhere. Mel Blanc was incredibly funny. Put him together with Jack and you have magic!
Thumbs up! Thumbs WAY up! Nice to see Jack break up Mel for a change!

Poor Jack & Don couldn't keep a straight face delivering the Bug Bunny punchline to save their lives. Love it!

Jack Benny + Mel Blanc + Don Wilson - Priceless!
BTW, I met Mel Blanc many years ago. A wonderful, friendly man who absolutely loved to entertain audiences. No one could possibly replace him.
