I see a few of us saw this on TCM a few days ago. Great movie. I hadn't seen it before, but like MaiBeyblader said, it was the kind of movie with a story that was so great it just held on and never let go.
I caught this movie somewhere in the middle, I think, but I was transfixed and couldn't look away (and there weren't any commercial breaks). The movie went by so fluidly that it seemed over way too soon. I love this movie~
@gomenos421 how can you say that?! such a great film. the acting was amazing, the musical score and writing went great together, and its got a great message. This was the first Bette Davis movie i ever saw and it was what made me fall in love with her as an actor. Simply amazing <<3
@gomenos421 you're crazy. its a cult classic....stylish, great costumes, bitchy lines, nice score, Claude Rains, good moral message, and of coure Bette!! Go watch Arnold, Sylvester--that may be more your style.
I Adore bette davis but shes such a stinker to claude rains until the end,, why does ot take her sooo long to get past her ego & all to see like gwtw he wanted to love them both........whoops
I Adore bette davis but shes such a stinker to paul henreid until the end,, why does ot take her sooo long to get past her ego & all to see like gwtw he wanted to love them both
Putting the scene where Mrs. Skeffington asked the mobster if he ever killed a man, and he replies, "If your talking about knocking off Mr. Skeffington, sure I'd love to", in the trailer is miss leading, and not a good representation as to what the whole movie was about... it would cause one to think this movie is a typical "film noir" where there is murder, etc...
My favourite movies from here are "The little foxes" and "A stolen life". But sometimes I think all of her movies are my favourites. She was so a great
Lost count of the times I have seen this, a woman obsessed with looks, material things, even jealous of her own daughter, just as well Claude Raines ended up Blind in the end, she wasn't just Ugly on the outside she was Ugly on the inside too. lol
gertrude stein (nutbar that she was) proclaimed that paragraphs were more emotional than sentences. i - just - thought i'd mention that... no reason, really :) (she was a nutbar)
Every scene Claude Rains has in this movie, he blows out of the water. Claude Rains is fabulous!
Bette Davis is a good actress, but her character really, really starts to get on my nerves. It's a good movie, but I have no sympathy or warmth whatsoever for the so-called protagonist. Fanny Skeffington is worthless.
But, did I mention how much Claude Rains rocks? :) He was the man. Totally.
OMG! One time I was in NJ with my aunt, who is 83, and she was wearing a HUGE hat, and she said, "When I woke up this morning, all I could think of was that I looked like Mrs. Skeffington". She hasn't seen that movie since her 20's.
The trailer alone is a classic. A wonderful film with a marvelous story and stellar acting. Oh, how I wish today's Hollywood had the class, style and glamour of its Golden Age as depicted in this classic. Bette Davis and Claude Raines are magical.
I adore this movie---talk about a main character's transformation!!! Stylish, bitchy, fun and strangely moving.

This movie was surreal!! Fanny is out of her living NUT!!! Claude Rains played it so serious and the result is an extremely bizarre film.
