  • Building laws do suck! make sure you consult your town/township before you build one of these amazing structures. Otherwise they may tear it down if you never got permission. Educate them if they dont understand the concept and dress professionally when you meet (no hippie wear).

  • @soggieshorts1: I'm sure a good chunk of that $45k went to fly the Earthship team of 10 and their tools half-way around the world so they could build it. Then they were able to build a self-cooling building with a self-contained water and sewage system in a few days on a remote island that had been devastated by a tsunami, and in the process train the locals how to build new permanent structures that don't require external utility systems. Not too shabby.

  • one little ring is all you got done for fourty thousand thats pathetic

  • Are those concrete blobs being thrown at the tire wall @ :50 min?

  • So cool! Inspiring!

  • I LOVE to read about these kinds of stories. These are the experiences that touch my heart in a mighty way.

  • most code enforcement r retards!they hv no common sense.most cant even think for themselves,so how can they tell someone how to build or see fit how u r suppose to use your own land as u see fit?the laws n schools r all bullshit, cuz the retards r the ones that go to them schools.its all bullshit, these houses r great!

  • He doesn't have to worry about global warming any more, now it's cooling. It looks like this is being caused by an outside source maybe the sun heats the earth, boy I bet they are surprised to find the sun heats the earth. Actually it is a scam like selling the Brookland bridge used to be. Now they want to scam us out of our money to prevent global warming.

  • He doesn't have to worry about globab warming any more it's global cooling now. Funny the warming cooling run on an 11 year cycle with sun spots. Loard I bet the sun heats the earth! Waite till they find out.

  • the un announced that the climate talks are about control and what every has said was ture .they want power look it up. sorry but its the truth !

  • @eredy they have power and forget about global warming or cooling, they have constructed the entire system, the entire system your entire reality, we are destroying the planet we need to live in homes like this for so many reasons, everytime you fill up gas in your car or shop at the supermarket or wathc tv or use your mobile your feeding them.... self sustainable home is a step out of economic slavery, gain the knowledge thats been kept from you, you will be amazed at what we do know.....

  • @Huzar1683 and who will suffer we will.some of the biggest polluters are big business and the un look it up said in papers and to the press what we trying global warming climate treaty isnt working and what people think is ture. its about control wake up look it up .dont be sheep its about control not betterment of the world

  • @eredy Big business is the only cause of pollution... if your talking about the cap and trade system then yes its about control everything is about control they use HAARP to create earthquakes, tsunami's, floods and the rest you state the obvious like you only just woke up your self dont drop the word sheep too loosely you might over your head......

  • @Huzar1683 trade where have you been? all over the world big governments are taking god givin rights away your gov mine its happening now. icc safe .com is a start. they will work with all the governments all over the world to enforce illegal laws on you on your home

  • all gore was proven a fake there IS NO GLOBAL WARMING WAKE UP SHEEP ITS ABOUT CONTROL OVER THE PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How much would it cost to build a single Earth Ship if a person is living on their own?

  • Very valid points

  • did you know that if you hide it for 3 year you do no need p ,p must hide it on your land?

  • try getting the permition in Germany! I dont even get a straw bale house going here. absolutely disgusting how the authorities deny us the solutions that can save our world!

  • These are some of the most ugliest buildings I have seen. The idea is a wonderful concept!!! You need to have a designer come in and improve on the aesthetics of the structures. Do these buildings comply with earthquake codes and structural endurance longevity?

  • @JohnPavilonis Earthship aesthetics depend on how much money is sunk into the design. There have been some really beautiful Earthships built, but the concept behind Earthships is true sustainable living affordable to the masses. Or in the cases where the crew travels for disaster relief, it's a matter of survival.

  • Could you please improve the audio? This one is so hard to understand that I couldn't even watch it all the way through. It looks like a great idea, but I have no idea what you are trying to say!

  • great ideas!

  • I hate old car tires.Earth ships invented by pennyless hippies.

  • @bluemountaindrivepae

you sound like a complete prat who doesn't know what they're talking about, obviously you were born with a silver spoon and wrongly look down at anyone who doesn't line the pockets of the greedy rich

  • I will have one of these amazing things one day

  • i would love to have a place like this one day but if the community is the discriminant type then i dont think i could tolerate it. i would be driving antique cars and motorcycles still.

  • I would love to build and live in an earthship, one day in the future I hope I can get the chance to live within an earthship community and bring many relatives and friends to this great idea!

I am from the UK and really hate how materialistic people are and feel so sorry for those who struggle in the system due to government rules and utiliy bills.

I would love to see a movement to help third world countries build earthships, there is enough used materials for everyone in this world! :)

  • Anyone have any more news on the one in Brighton?

  • @ 00:47 "melting ice-caps and global warming" ???!! What is that then? Some sort of new-age propaganda? The whistle-blower at the C.R.U. in Cambridge who leaked the e-mails has already proved it's all bull. google 'Climategate' .

  • This is the future! It's fantastic! X

  • I love this ! it is Just perfect I Thank you earth ship for the contribution to our planet :)

  • I love the concept of Earthships. Too bad we don't very many buildings such as thin in the USA. I would love to learn Earthship building

  • We are building a earthbag home and just found out that we are required to have a 1000 gallon septic tank even if we have a composting toilet and reclaim all the gray water. We can't get a building permit until we have the septic tank...CRAZY! Majors Dome - Garfiled, Arkansas USA

  • FatJn - - - I also see all the code as only applicatable to mortaged in insured city deweller homes. At least codes are too restrictive in the type of construction. However, rememeber this, they are driven by big builders and those who do not like alternate building techniques that they can not make money building ! A capitalist driven system !

  • Sure local eviromental knowledge sould always be considered during the design phase but building personally I believe that there should be at least two codes. One for homes with mortagages to protect the mortgage company. The second case is for owner built "No Utility Connection" type and requires no construction or building design approval. So any so called building permit list it as non-permited for utilities. When or if it is ever sold the buyer is made aware that it is only off grid.

  • love what you're doing but can't believe you believe in global warming!!!!! get real!!

  • Has anyone tested these buildings for RADON?

  • Great informative video. If more people were allowed to build this way, in America we could AFFORD to stay in our houses....Change those codes!

  • I almost wish we were heading toward an ice-age. It would be much easier to heat than it is to cool.

  • It looks like those tire walls could live through an ice age.

  • I understand that the local engineers in Scotland did say that the original roof would lead to dry rot but they were ignored.

The result? Dry rot. So as a supporter of the whole concept at least acknowledge that there was local knowledge that would have saved you time too?

  • Yeah, rain is a problem when you are working with dirt! :)

  • It took 2 years to build it but 1and a half of it was getting it approved! lol :) That would be the hardest part in America!!

  • If the laws & regs. in N. America were'nt so stiff, maybe more people would consider this as an alternative to the more expensive and weaker conventional homes. If this was accepted by law, then schemes could be built and their re-sale would be feasible. Using shipping containers to build homes too is great. Re-using materials is good as long as they aren't bad for your health. They help reduce dependency on trees and help put less pressure on landfills.

  • iT IS A DISGRACE THAT THE PLANNING LAWS are making it difficult for us to build our own cheap homes. The use of tyres in earth is a brilliant use of materials taht can be reused.

The Government is the enemy of the people

  • It's not just the government. I worked in architecture during the building boom and it's these private contractors who align themselves up with the municipal authorities and influence the codes to favor their particular trades and services..and force competition out.

  • @nbm34 the government is the people. the laws are there for reasons, things change and then the laws need to change with us. with the previous and somewhat modern philosophy that law makes sense.

  • @nbm34 The cheap houses are not wanted as the expansive housing market is essential for the human livestock owners called bankers. The point is to make you depend on something called money!

  • @nbm34 So true! No borders no nationS!

  • @nbm34

august 29, 1907 - Quebec city. There were no regulations govering the construction or approvals of the bridge being constructed. 75 people, 87% of all workers dead.

september 11, 1916 - Same bridge. It collaped again, this time killing 13 people. The canadian goverment decided that it was in order to start a system to ensure that we prevent people from getting killed. Those regultions exist to prevent people from dying, not trying to make life difficult for everyone.

  • @mrcooleh I am afraid I have no reference to this matter, and can not find if I commented the matters you raise regarding a bridge. What is at issue though regarding earthships. Are that 2 million people in my country are officialy homeless. We need homes like these fast, The access to land and planning laws make these concerns worst than they need be. People need their freedom

and access to land. The Govs ARE the enemy of the people. Keeping the rich needs above the poor. Regards

  • the problem is that they're suits who get paid to make stupid rules (they're not ALL stupid rules) and they make things difficult because even though HE and MANY people know that the design works and is strong, there's always red tape to go through to get the job done

  • You're seeing the distillation of several projects, that took place over many years, happen over the course of a few minutes in these videos. It seems that most every single time they attempt to build they find themselves starting at square one with interchangeable bureaucrats making identical protests and laying down identical roadblocks. It is an inherit part of the problem. I dont know that he helps his cause by challenging the status quo in the manner he does, which is i think is your point.

  • The architects and engineers he speaks of in his video's don't know anything... about earthships... which is why they get slowed down. The local professionals have to question what is going on in a code controlled area because it's their job, and without questioning they will not understand. What they typically do is completely different that what earthships are.

His work is so spread out, that he isn't doing much work in the same areas, which is why he has to deal with it over and over.

  • i agree to some point, but you can also understand how its frustrating to be held back just by traditions.

ofcourse, being disrespectfull is never right, but its understandaball.

(excuse my spelling, its not my strong side)

    peace!

  • You guys are awesome and i hope you guys get funding and support!

  • why make them round?

  • making them round prevents the evil spirits from hiding in the dark corners :P

  • I think some countries have such religions

  • This is exceptional, but I hate that you are doing it on the wrong assumptions concerning CO2. At any rate, this is perfect for the climate changes coming due to changes in solar activity leading to colder decades (centuries?) on earth. Your house needs the development of a safe chimney for heating and cooking.

  • this is really amazing

  • Pretty good videos but you alienate way too many people with the fascades on these houses. You could just as easily make them look traditional as you could make them look like a set from Planet of the Apes. You stated that problem in dealing with Scotland. BTW, how do you think cinder blocks got their name?

  • These videos, if intended for the broader audience, show very little of what these structures look like once completed. Most of the footage is the down and dirty construction. Having seen the "Garbage Warrior" movie I can say that the structures built in NM look and feel like living artwork with no trace of an exposed tread anywhere. I wish they would re cut these vids with that in mind. As they are now i understand why someone might expect the walls to look like the Firestone family sepulchre.

  • Hello, there

I just saw the movie the "Garbage Warrior" at a Film Festival in Powell River, B.C. on Feb 9th, 2008.

It was truly eye opening. You are doing great work and i believe you are here for a reason.

Thank god for you. I recommend highly that people see the GARBAGE WARRIOR. I hope to built one of these homes one day. Its our responsibility to take care of ourselves and this beautiful planet we are on.

Keep coming and showing your work.

  • i love the look and using less resources. but global warming may just be warming from sun fluctuations. all the planets in our solar system are getting warmer right now and that needs to be looked at.

  • As far as i know, there is NO SHORTAGE of tires laying everywhere seriously these houses look cooler and cooler each video, they are a heck of a lot safer than trailers and projects. I wish i could have a house like this made of jarritos bottles yeah baby

  • Me & my partner will be staying in an Earthship in Taos for a week. We are interested in having one built. Will have more details posted after the trip.

  • @Romulinx1 awesome! I'm thinking of going there this summer, please post when you get home!

  • @Romulinx1 any updates, would love to hear how it turned out!

  • in my part of Canada if you lay a cement pad (foundation) and get a good architect and an engineer you can build it outside city limits anyway.

But i think that special septic tank wouldnt be allowed to filter water using outdoor planters, it would freeze for 1 thing in the winter, that makes it a bit less green.

  • WTF is your problem with that kind of construction... I looked at about 10 vids now and you are always whining against those earthship... If you are against stay in your beloved apartment or in your ordinary home and stop whining about those intelligent houses. Are you in a lobby or what?

  • Funny, I don't see *YOUR* vids on YouTube. Put up, or SHUT UP.

    :/

  • Fantastic innovation. Right ideas, forward thinking. Very impressive.

  • I want to live in one now.

    ha.

  • To those who complain about the fees charged for plans, I say this: Do you have any idea on how much it costs for working drawings to be created for an individual site?

Construction drawings have to be created for each site. Take this into consideration.

  • That's where you get plop-down architecture which causes historic buildings to have to be relocated or destroyed, and hills to be leveled. It's hardly ever flexible.

  • What was the cost of you making this post?

  • Are you joking or you are simply stupid... The labor cost... There is not more labor cost than any other type of houses... and it doesn't cost more to transport tires than transport wood or even plastics... or windows. And if you look a bit about theses types of construction this is more intelligent to build theses because they cost less on environment.

  • In that argument, all houses should not be approved. No humans should live. All factories (or maybe only 'most') would have to be shut down.

Even if Earthships don't change the environment much, as some people put it, at least they don't change it by making the 'ecosystem'(to sue your own word) WORSE.

Earthships are definetly an improvement and a good step forward to solving various economical and environmental issues.

  • Nice idea to re-use materials. The huts didn't have windows though, but that can be remedied.

  • I see at least one window
