I found a great old mono hi fi that uses the same transformers as many Supro/Valco 6973 powered amps. The power tranny is like a fat stack, and the OT is a dead on same as a 6424/1624 or other Valco. Who made these is my secret, but stay away from elaborate organ amps and experimenting is half the fun. I have made 5 Valco type amps now and they are all totally trick. I have done some from Organ guts, but when there are 8 EL84s, and 27 12AU7s avoid it. If all else fails call it a harp amp. LOL

what you need is called a head. Technically you would have a cab (a box with a speaker) and the you get head (which is the amplifier)

Take it into a music shop and ask them what heads would work with it. Speakers have different ohm ratings so try to get one that is the same ohms. Also you should get an amp that is 2x as powerful then the speaker, because when you blow a speaker it's the amps fault.

When you turn the volume up to much on the amp it will short sending raw heat to the speaker causing the speaker coils to melt. This is the main way speakers are blown. If you have a speaker that says it can take 100 watts you can put 400watts into it if you want. But it will still be the same volume as it was at 100 watts and it will not hurt the speaker. Also look into tube amps. Tube's where the first type of amplifier. Solid state came out in the early 50's.

Hi, I'm English, and I can't quite understand what Mr Yates says the amp is (i.e the make/ model). Does anyone know please? It looks like a Leak valve amp from the 1960s (they were UK made, and are still quite expensive), but I guess it's an American amp, and I suppose many amps look quite similar!! Check out part 2, this amp sounds awesome through that Ampro (?) cab. Cheers.
