I dislike Cena's on-screen character (Take note that I have a problem with his on-screen character! I have no issues with him as a person) because I simply cannot stand his character. His character is just way too much of a self-righteous goody-too-shoes and his character is too much of a predictable and repetitive hero. It just gets absolutely annoying and it's incredibly cheesy. Hell! Cena's current predicament is no different from when The Rock first joined as Rocky Maivia.

When The Rock went by the name of Rocky Maivia, he was an ok wrestler. But his character was just too much of a goody-too-shoes and so cheesy that people were getting annoyed by it very quickly. That's why the "Die Rocky! Die!" chants came along because of how annoyed people were with the Rocky Maivia character. So how did they fix it? They changed his name from Rocky Maivia to The Rock and they also had him portrayed as an obnoxious, cocky, arrogant, but lively and charismatic Heel-Tweener.

And let me make another comparison. Cena is no differant from Hulk Hogan. Both of them are incredibly overrated and they're not at the top because they're great wrestlers. Let's be honest...Hogan was a terrible and horrific wrestler and Cena is realistically very average. But both of those guys were/are at the top because of their on-screen characters and because they made a shit load of money for the WWE. Cena appeals to the kids and teenagers that WWE is marketed towards so he's a no-brainer.

As far as Cena being ranked as one of the top wrestlers in the world...he only ranks so high because he's WWE's top draw. Some wrestlers are famous for their wrestling abilities (Ex. Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Chris Benoit) and other wrestlers are famous for their on-screen characters (Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock). Guess which one Cena falls into. Even PWI has come out and acknowledged that Cena's gimmick is very overrated and that kids and teenagers are his target audience.

Nah. Cena is at the top simply for his gimmick which is extremely popular with kids and teens. Women only like him for his looks. Pure and simple. But when you really think about it, Cena's abilities are very average. Bret Hart has said that he considers Cena to have a "strange and bizarre" wrestling style. As for his abilities on the mic, they're nothing special really. It's always the same "Me Cena! Me fight you no matter what! If you don't think like me or like the fans, rowr!" routine.

I'm sure by now you can tell that I am not your typical Cena hater that jumps on the Cena hating bandwagon since I've been a pro-wrestling fan for over 15 years. I also never ever liked Hulk Hogan and I considered him boring to watch when I was little. As for Cena being pushed heavily, he's only pushed for marketing reasons and to appeal to his target demographic. Cena fits very well into this new family-friendly, watered down, PG rated WWE but his character would get ripped apart if he was around during the late 90's.
