As a military family, you can go to the gate and greet him. Just ask for a "gate pass" at the ticket desk, they HAVE to give you one

That's how every soldier should be greeted when coming home from a tour of duty. The applause he got is the least he should get, and I would have shaken his hand and thanked him for serving his country.

It's different over here though. Most soldiers arrive at a military base, not an international airport.
