For godsake, go in the damn mine already! Footage from the outside is boring. Don't tell us how unstable it looks, etc.. It sounds whiney. Go in! Take a chance! Have some adventure!
If one more person tells me that old dynamite is unstable, I might have to shove a fork in my eye. Thanks for the concern though.... =)
Dynamite which has sat for 60 to 80 to 100 or more years, which has already sweated out and crystalized, and then evaported; is relatively inert. It's the first couple decades that it sweats out and is still relatively potent which is really dangerous. If someone doesn't know the difference (that's most of you), then I suggest you stay away all together.
Thanks for the warning though =) I love the Tecopa area. Our camping area was 300 feet inside the east portal of the War Eagle. The weather outside was around 115*F, but inside was only about 70*F, with a constant cool breeze blowing through. One night we went in through the west portal and came out through the east (south) portal, then had to hike back up and over back to our car.
Ahh, yes I'm familiar with the relationship between nitro and dynamite, how nitro is made, the fillers they used to use, why they rotated the cases regularly, how it leaks out of the filler and sweats out of the tube. The colder the nitro gets the more stable it becomes, you can actually cool it down using dry ice... but we weren't messing around with it or anything. Just took some pictures and headed on.
It's not in any of the main areas. We had to climb far down inside a stope to find it
Just a caution, if you're not already aware of it about old mines. Sometimes when a mine was abandoned in the 1800's, dynamite and other explosives were left in there by people not wanting to take the chance of igniting the explosives by moving them after they got a little old and unstable. They can to this day, still be dangerous, if not deadly to someone accidently disturbing them. Here's wishing you safe exploring and videotaping!

We recently did a long trip out in Tecopa, we camped out inside the War Eagle mine and actually found dynamite there too.

@syberphish Be careful with that. It has a tendency to be unstable at that age. Jeff

@ghosttownhunter yeah, but you only gotta worry if it's sweating.
