You really are lazy if you need GPS to cut hay with a hydra swing Discbine. Once the field is started straight it is very easy to keep in a straight line, just follow the previous swath. GPS in agriculture was designed for seeding, tillage, and spraying applications. Maybe for self propelled swather's and Combines.
@farmer3420 he has the technology already in the tractor i presume for the jobs u listed, but why not use it when its there? Its an expensive setup so he is just right making the most of it!
i really don't see the need to use gps. Its clear where you have to cut and hay cutting is pretty easy. I mean if you were pulling a 30 ft field cult behind it would be a different story, I just don't understand why you need it for cutting hay.
sweet i use a hesston disc bine also.....it sure cuts time done for you...i use only manual steering me and last year i cut 800 acres while working a 48hr work week i wish i would have done it all this year since hay is expensive
EZ steer thats a wheel thats mounted to the streering cullom consitanley adusting to what the read out from the reciver is sending it I made a 90 degree turn with the same model a vary fun toy to have
for one thing, to make a smooth field takes work, its no problem to cut hay at 15 mph if when its seeded its pool table smooth. another thing, having auto steer adds hours to a day. spending 16 hrs in anything is very tireing.
dam 14 mph thats fast whats the cut width of that and how much hp does that tractor have? we just bought a place with 100 acres hay and we have a 110 hp case 2090 so how fast could we go and wats a good size mower for that kind of acreage?
Well, you have manually turn around on the headlands to start the new pass at the beginning/end of the field..... but for the cutting periods, no, you don't have to touch the wheel.
How do you like the trimble system??? You running RTK??? Our farm is looking into the systems.. JD is little expensive when compared to outback and trimble etc. Please let me know when you get a chance
I have so far been quite impressed with the Trimble. No, not running RTK. For what I plan to use it for (haying and non-row-crop field work), it would be a waste of money. You can see the accuracy I have with this, and it's currently just on WAAS - The basic level! Only thing I'd like RTK for is remembering fields more, though even this system does that.
Normally there isn't any chatter on the steering wheel, I just put it in that tractor and didn't have it set right.
I'm looking into a JD unit or two but it'd better be a LOT better to be worth the extra cost. The EZ-Steer is better for changing vehicles. This system went from an AGCOStar 4wd tractor in the spring, to a 7830 JD, 7630 JD, then to a SP Sprayer, then to another 4wd for fall tillage work. Would've gone on one of the swathers too had it not been busy on the sprayer.
holy jeeze man how long is your field? looks to me almost a kilometer or more
sk389 8 months ago
@sk389 ---- The fields are 0.5 miles long, which is 0.8km long. I have done fields that are a mile long, those are sure nice!!

Nice video. Looks like youre flying compared to my old 1209! Did you have to program an offset to the side in the 500 for the mower?

Alberta, Canada.
Was at 10mph near the beginning of the video, mostly was at 14mph. Have cut at 17mph with that combination before.
Won't be doing any of that anymore, now cut with a SP machine. 3 feet wider but top speed is only 14mph.

Is that GPS a 250 or 500 model? Thinking of doing the same, thanks!
dairyfarmer83 3 years ago
It is the 500 model running on WAAS. The 250 would do the exact same job, just doesn't have the potential to go to higher accuracy.

Thanks for the information.

I know! The alfalfa actually caught really well, but as it was a new seeding.......
Since it was an alfalfa/timothy mix for beef cows, it couldn't be sprayed.
We made it into silage, so it actually turned out well.
The regrowth was beautiful!
