before this summer i didn't know of this song. but every monday, in the hotel i'm working there is a barbecue night hosted with live music. one of those modays i heard the musicians play this song and sing it. ever since this song is allways played for me on modays :D
I've heard Eric say in an interview he doesn't like to play the lead guitar in this piece because he can't play it right, and usually delegates it to another guitarist. He got it right this time. Maestro.
Anyone know who the 2nd backup singer is? I believe one is Tessa Niles...not certain who is who. Percussionist is Ray Cooper, a real performer and showman. Gigantic talent on that stage!! I wonder what the date was?
It was 1988 - At that time, Mark Knopfler and Alan Clark (Dire Straits main keyboards player) were touring with Clapton. For this particular show Elton John was also on stage (I don't know why?) but usualy Alan was alone tacking care of the keyboards.
One of the best live versions of layla in mine opinion ! Playing an incredible solo, he 's really on fire ! and ofcourse backed up with one of the best musicians !
There -are- a lot of great versions of Layla out there, but this one really -does- seem to supply every single piece of the pie. Based on Eric's "Russell Crowe" physical appearance, I'm going to guess it's about 1992 or 3 here. I've had fun playing along; I expect others will, as well.
singing w/ fingers, epic

Oh this is a live in Tokyo! we can hear Eric saying at the end 'thank you Tokyo'
Elton John probably was also touring in Japan at the same time and was invited on stage. Great idea ;-)
