@Apockiller I have not changed a thing about my setup in years but I can now produce higher video and audio quality since YouTube let me do it now. I'll redo this one some day...
You surely have 'Neil Peart Syndrome'!. I've liked Rush since 75.Had NPS in the 80's myself.(Wish we had you tube then!) I never really cared for Tom Sawyer. But I think I'm gonna try to get a decent cover of it for my channel.(Its in the i-pod/isolated version) You ever think of playing Rush Differently? In your own style? I'm starting to realize as cool as this is, its a copy of another person.(and a good one dont take that wrong!) What if we got drummers to play one Rush tune there OWN way?
Neil has said that this is the hardest song for him to play, yet you nailed it I've tried and find it nearly impossible. You are very talented. Thanks for posting. I'll continue to follow your videos.
well even neil said he feels awesome when he fully nails it. IMO this is one of the, if not THE toughest rock song to drum out. you did a pretty delicious job though dude. props for even looking this one in the face
Watching you play it has helped me fine tweek several bridges and cues. All those years playing it, you get used with certain ways and you forget about the real riffs. It is good going back to the origines every once in a while.
Playing Rush is a hard job, thats what I love about them music!
Nice attention to detail, even Neil himself knows how hard that song is to play, and to play it right it demands a high level of skill and physical effort, Bravo!
Nice attention to detail, even Neil himself knows how hard that song is to play, and to play it right it demans a high level of skill and physical effort, Bravo!
Bloody Brilliant. I try and play several Rush songs on the guitar and find them difficult to say the least . Just managed to nail the camera eye . when you nail the lead it's sooo satisfying .. can't play fast lead work though.
My lad has a drum kit , which I find enjoyable to play, but only some simple ac/dc drum parts .
I should put something clever here, but my brain is just going AHHHHHHH YESSSSSSS HELL YESSSSSSS. I know it's a cliché, but "Tom Sawyer" is just the best ever--one of my faves as a vocalist and great fun on the set. Well done, man. :)
@shirtgod I know the owner well and I had the chance to play on the kit the first time it was displayed to the public! Check my video of "Anthem", there is a picture of me playing the Slingerland kit at the end of the video.
@shirtgod I'm a big fan of PT. I own a lot of their stuff, even way before Harrison joined them, and I have seen them playing live I have learned several songs from "Deadwing" but I have not practiced them in a while....
I think you drumming is excellent. I love Tom Sawyer with Neil, and I think you do a very good job. I think Rush should keep you in mind if by some misfortune, Neil becomes injured or just needs to attend to some family matters for a brief bit. Keep up the good work.
@thegermanchannel212 At the time, Slingerland was one of the greatest companies in the world (if it was good for Buddy and Gene, it was certainly good enough for Neil). Kit tour: Some day...
@thegermanchannel212 I understand. But for Neil, there is NO specific drum company in the world that you can use to duplicate well the sound of his drums though his 37 years career with Rush. His sound changed A LOT over that period. A good example is how high he had to tune his small toms on the R30 kit to simulate his concert toms on the Tamas (to a point where it sounded rather badly in my opinion). The best we can do is to find equipment we like, tune them well, and play the best we can.
@thegermanchannel212 Oh, ok. Well. I am a bit different I guess. I play what *I* like first. I'm trying to duplicate Neil's playing, not him. I think the only think I have in common with him now is the way my kit is set (difficult to play Rush right without a similar drum setup) and the Paragons (which I acquired to duplicate his sound as much as possible). I'm not playing the Promark 747 or wearing the hat.... And, also, I don't have 30K bucks to put on a DW kit... ;)
@thegermanchannel212 I like DW, they make awesome drums. But I have been playing Tama for 20 years and I love the sound. I am totally happy with them so why would I go and switch ?
regarding blisters..get down to the soft skin(remove any blister skin)..get some tea bags and put them in a dishpan..pour warm water in the dishpan..soak your blisters for 20mins+..pat dry..a couple days..your skin will toughen up
@Freeskies Thanks for the tip! In fact, I am lucky enough to very rarely suffer from blisters from drumming, but it happens sometime. Right now, I have more problems with tendinitis .... :(
@Astrotama : Im a drummer as well, I play with Nike Batting gloves...if you think the sticks are going to fly out of your hands, go for something better (expensive) with the Football ones..funny but true. Zildjian ones or other drummer gloves ALWAYS BREAK..this is just to share my experience...Carry On man!!
I have been a Rush fan for 30 years and I have heard alot try. As a drummer myself I know first hand this is no easy feat. All I can say is nice job bro. But as a drummer I would say YYZ is next baby.
Very nice dude. I am no drummer, but I have looked at a lot of your vids and am glad to see someone cares enough about perfection to do this. I have been playing stringed instruments for over 35 years, and the only criticism I have is that the bass drum sounds flabby or waffly on your recordings. It is perfectly in time, but something sounds amiss to me there; it seems to be reverberating too much or something. Of course, it is likely just my old ass ears...
Btw - what is up with the "Comment pending approval" shit?! Can't take negativity on your comments page? Kinda squelching people's expression, arentcha? WHAT is THAT about, dude?! Come on now, don't be a pussy.
@porkythepig007 I can take criticisms related to drumming, the video, etc., no sweat. I am my worse critic (believe me). But I must control the comments to avoid flaming wars between people making completely irrelevant comments or sending spam.
Nice and powerful man. You punch it up well... I see too many people doing Neil/Rush and they are just weak all around. Its one thing to have the timing, notes, licks down... another thing completely to do it with proper GUSTO, you know what I mean!?!? (one thing: your Snare Arm must be dying though... I would recommend you explore ways to kick it out while using less energy. That song must be a killer on the left arm!)
BTW, have you seen Adventures In Power yet? If not, you HAVE TO, its LOLx10
Very nice and a lot of fun to watch. Great job and thanks for the lesson. I think that the negative comments should only be seen if they can attach a video of themselves backing up their cyber mouth. Till then, shut up.
You're the man! I get screwed over as soon as the guitar solo starts. The snare pattern throws me off and the drum solo is just so fast I can't keep up! Really great job!
awesome man, i just watched "your" la villa strangiato... congrats man,, honestly, you should figure out the way to send those videos to neil.. i mean, arent you curious??

You have no idea how many times I've played this along with my iPod... but I've got e small drumset... a snare, 2 small toms, one floor tom, a bass drum, and a hi-hat... but i get by... for the crashes I just push the hi-hat down then let it up real fast...
DUUUUUDE! Awesome! How is it to rock that hard? life must be a little easier being able to play along to Tom Sawyer like that! Great, Fricken sweet, nice as, Yieah boy! One more time - Fucking shit hot. That'l do. You might get a big head if I say any more;-)
I have always considered NP to be the best Drummer there ever was. I may need to make some room at that spot now .. Dood that was right on Q I may have heard one or 2 slips but then again I'm 43 so my ears could be phucked up Either wat dood you Rock!!!
After a heavy week at work I settled down this Friday evening with a bottle of red in front of the TV. Feeling a little sleepy I decided to call it a night but only after a Rush night cap via the gift of You Tube to send me off...and I happened across your stuff. That was two hours ago. Thanks for the entertainment, Astromama. I'll sleep well tonight.
I think it's time to redo this one since you got that nice Cam. it would be nice to see you clear
