  • The only two tv stationas would shutdown for the night and the crew would go home. That is closedown

  • Is closedown the equivalent of sign-off in the USA?

  • I left that country more than 10 years ago and I am in no way a patriotic New Zealander, but this is by far the best version of the greatest national anthem in the world.

  • Love the 80's childhood memories.

  • TVNZ needs to start playing this at 6AM again.

  • I love New Zealand

  • It is a tree that will be part of the huge sustainable logging / forestry industry in NZ.

  • This is a fantastic video, but I am a bit offended by the scene at 4:00-4:02. Cutting down trees (probably native forest) is a sign of destruction of nature, not a sign of progress. But other than that, excellent scenery and music.

  • @JerrySpringerRooms just as well we don't burn much then aye

  • That was really beautiful !!

  • how come wen i luk up tha lyrics ther r 2 paragraphs which isnt in this song

  • Gotta love Annie Crummer.

  • Goota luv Annie Crummer !

  • I'm very bad at being patriotic (the measles of mankind and all that), but I have to admit, this brought a smile to my face. I remember closedown! I think the Goodnight Kiwi is somewhere on Youtube...

  • Comment removed

  • wonderful I Love NZ in American but when I can im moving im in Love with someone down there in Auckland, and its a Wonderful and breath taking place God Defend New Zealand

  • I feel proud listening to this anthem

  • how bad i wanted ot be called a kiwi... i love new zealand as much as i do with my own country, i'm not betraying my country nor my countrymen, it's just that there's a lot of things that i love about new zealand... the way they're connected to their country, equality to everyone it doesnt matter who or what race you are.. the lush green mountains the glacier, their activities mostly the people... oh how is wish someone would give me a pernamu as a gift.. haha.. kia ora guys!!!

  • remember when tv used to shut down at night? i feel old

  • every single time i watch this video clip n listen to that song i have got tears in my eyes, no matter which of the world u r at, it always make me feel home away from home, thank for uploading mate. god defend new zealand.

  • Best network sign-off of any worldwide: graphics, music/song, concept.

  • Oy Kiwis, good luck against Slovakia.

  • This is the sort of thing that should of been shown to mark the 50 years of NZ TV. They did show the Goodnight Kiwi at the end but I kinda think the Goodnight Kiwi has become a little over rated now. They also should of had a show that showcased the 50 years of TV instead of a quiz show with some random celebritys answering questions on 1970's TV shows that weren't even NZ made.

  • They used to show it before tv began in the mornings also. Gone are the good ole days when TV wasnt 24/7.

  • omg i remember this used to come on way back in the early to mid 90s! It used to appear in between daytime television shows

  • 4:02 spoils it a bit

  • @haienbleurgh

That represents NZs hard working forestry. It is just a pine tree, planted to be cut down then replanted! Sustainable living! This video was made before ridiculous over the top "greenies" were so overstated. New Zealand is full of trees, rivers, mountains, lakes, beaches etc. But we should also be keen to keep our hard working attitude! We have a great balance here

  • @Cole18383 when this country had no greenie twits?

    Must have been wonderful

  • @TheChiefkim You can thank MMP for that....

  • All of a.... sudden? Yea! The National Anthem has suffered a kick in the arse by an apparent "mana fuelled people" intent on pushing the country to the knees. Rhodesia was an abundately affluent nation until - oh dear- blacks took over the land- desrroyed the buildings, farm equipment & workers then pleaded ignorance. Look out NZ.......

  • @Buggerlugz000 Rhodesia was and is (Zimbabwae) a sh#thole. Unlike THAT colony, NZ is a proud nation...I seriously doubt NZ will ever end up like all those oppressive former white colonies in Africa...We may argue with each other from time to time but we are and always will be ONE nation!!!

  • @2000Ajjet Rhodesia was NOT a shithole. Zimbabwe is shithole. As to NZ well you never know with people like Hone Harawera, Keith Locke, John Minto and Tama Iti etc who all seem hell bent changing our country and dividing the nation.

  • @luke96241 ...might as well throw in Don Brash, Micheal Laws, Paul Henry et al...everyone is intitiled to an opinion, we may not agree with their point of view but thats the beauty of living in a democracy, something Rhodesia was not and Zimbabwe is not. NZ is my home, my ancestors both British and Maori built this country...

  • You are so right I live in Australia and as much as I love it here You just cant beat our beautiful country New Zealand.... I get goosebunmps whenever I hear our National Anthem and after watching that video I realised how much I do love my Country...

  • What's there not to like about NZ?!?!

Best place under the sun, eh?

  • Really Classy Job by TVNZ - Shame that there is no more closedowns these days!

  • Excellent footage and a beautiful anthem but they should have shown a bit of the All Blacks. If they did that then it would have been pure perfection.

  • missing home now more than ever after watching that!!

  • I wish the US stations had a video this awe inspiring! This was about the time MTV was starting up... hell, now MTV doesn't even do music videos anymore (does it?).

  • I worked at the Remarks in 89 and first saw the TVNZ1 sign-off then. 20 yrs later I still get emotional over this video - thinking of my friends in NZ and the really great and fun times. It's a great country filled w/great people and spectactular terrain. The US has it's share of NZ youth visitors, bringing extreme sports enthusiasts (which is good and all), but this classic video can't be beat by any modern day extreme. It blends everything: sport, natural beauty, culture, art, society....

  • the memory of the man working on the greenstone taonga stands out for me, as a kid I always wondered what on earth he was doing....

  • agreed. This country is too soft and liberal these days

  • Beautiful

  • ata fucka runga mai !!!!

Yeah thats the fukin shit ...Kia a Potato ok Hoki and chips !!!!

  • NZ anthem is the best in the world

  • It dont mater where in the world you are Nz is still the country of the Gods and if the Maori version of the national anthem dosent give you goose bumps of pride then it should !!

  • It gives me an erection; what does that mean?

  • The maori version doesn't. The english version does however

  • "... country of the Gods..." excellently put!

  • @sstitanic how bad i wanted ot be called a kiwi... i love new zealand as much as i do with my own country, i'm not betraying my country nor my countrymen, it's just that there's a lot of things that i love about new zealand... the way they're connected to their country, equality to everyone it doesnt matter who or what race you are.. the lush green mountains the glacier, their activities mostly the people... oh how is wish someone would give me a pernamu as a gift.. haha.. kia ora guys!!!

  • yo man, what's with the hate?

  • I remember this being the first thing before televised programming in the morning.

I'd get up at 6.30am and sit through the test pattern waiting for the cartoons to come on early Sunday morning.

  • i remember this as a primary kid in the very early nineties... amazing clip

  • The version that made the te reo verses popular. Good ole Annie Crummer. God Defend New Zealand!

  • Fantastush! Super! NZ in the 1980's was a blast and would love to do the 80's again. Super video and I believe its been remade for TV2 now.

  • awesone song, thank god i live in aotearoa,

  • That is so kool! I'm a new NZ Resident, and had not yet heard the national anthem! Thanks to jimmynz24 also for clarifying the verse order. Gotta learn some Maori now.

  • I love our anthem !

  • Great clip! There are five verses to God Defend New Zealand. The order they are sung in the video are

I - First verse sung in Maori; "E Ihoa Atua"

II - Second verse sung in english; "Men of every creed and race"

III - Fourth verse sung in Maori; "Waiho tona takiwa"

IV - Fifth verse sung in english; "May our mountains ever be"

V - First verse sung in english

The third verse was ommitted. There is a military/war-like theme to this verse and is sometimes sung on ANZAC Day.

  • Yours doesn't come in the form of a closedown...but it is magnificent just the same.

    watch?v=pS7oJNozQZM

  • Absolutely Beautiful.

Our homeland is not perfect, but we have what many things that so many people envy

    Beauty

    Peace

    Harmony

Being Maori, im proud that both of our languages were acknowledged in such a way, even in the eighties.

    Kia Ora

  • right as. I visited NZ for a month in 2007. Anyone who lives there is damn lucky. Amazing place. Brit in Japan

  • wow wot a bloody good anthem :o I wish I lived in New Zealand!!!

  • lol!!! i want to live in nz in the 80s!

  • Haha I'm too young to remember closedown--I kinda wish I wasn't though...there's a lot of trash on after that time at night lol :(

  • My goodness.

TVNZ had all the best closedowns!

This on TV One, Goodnight Kiwi on TV2 (and now on TVNZ6!).

Did the National Radio simulcast run through the night?

  • my god it was a cheesy as any IBA - ITV franchise start up films from the 1970-80. Good ol' TV ONE. Made me feel patriotic for my once adopted homeland.

  • Mann its so funny how I was able to sing along to this whole rendition of the NZ anthem... a great national anthem with awesome visuals... brings back a whole lot of memories for sure!!!

  • bring back buck!!!

  • Thanks for posting this btw. I agree

asasinz2 that they should bring this back with some new visuals.

  • Love hearing Annie Crummer on this! When singing at the rugby etc, I always hear her voice going hard, doing the song proud! Go Dalvanius and Peter Morgan too!

  • Fantastic!!! I was looking for this for a long time.. do you have a good quality one in avi format?

  • didnt kno there was a long version lol

  • They should start playing this again, I remember when this was on in the mornings sometimes. Bring back national pride on television, the anthem is never played on tv anymore unless it's the start of some sporting fixture.

  • Primo az! Man it makes me miss home! :(

  • Yeah thats awesome. Always brings a lump to my throat and makes me so damn proud to be a Kiwi and to live in this gorgeous country we have here. bring out the flags !!

  • i have a real yearning to go to NZ & this clip has only added to the wanting, have someone over there who will put me up a couple of weeks as well, just need to clear the mortgage, build the extension & find good staff to run the business

  • Unfortunately it's changed a lot in the 15-20 years since that clip was made... :(

  • I've been in London for the last ten years, & it has been raining non-stop for the last month, whilst in the last few days Al'Qaeda has been trying its best to blow people up around the UK. Watching this brings back the goosebump feelings I used to get watching it at home, only 100 times stronger. I can't wait to get home in a few months. This clip hasn't lost it's power to stir the hearts of the patriots amongst us - thanks Duncster!!

  • That's Annie Crummer singing it, eh?

  • Great song, great clip. I actually sometimes start my day playing this, and I'm about as far away from New Zealand as it's possible to be without leaving the surface of the Earth :) Much better than the way we used to close down TV here in Scotland. Feel free to post more NZTV clips anytime :)

  • WOW! FAB. What year did they actually stop showing it?. I remember being on holiday in N.Z. some years ago and seeing this early one morning. Then I went again two years ago and it was no longer on. Great to see this awesome photography again.

  • Great, so great to see that again, i been here in New Zealand for 13 years now.. 13 years ago, when i first wake up at 6am each morning, i always hear this national anthem!!! Then follow the Te Karere news (the maori news, it still the same!!!)

  • Greetings from the west island!

That just makes me home sick. Gave me goosebumples as well, I havn't seen that for many years! 80's? Great vid anyway, thanks for posting. Cheers cuzzy. :D

  • Yeah woo hoo! bring back the old days!, I remember getting up early on a Saturday morning in my PJ's and waiting for What Now to come on and seeing this! I was just a very young kiddie. My favourite was the second male singer and his "Aota -a - rooo oh a a ha ha" and the helicopter, and are those water slides the ones at the old De Brett's in Taupo?

  • I'm not from New Zealand, but I can easily see it has much to be proud of.

  • Interesting how much they show sports.

  • Thanks for this! Great to see this now I'm living in France.

  • thanks for this video! im live in the land of oz..and this video makes me homesick!!!

  • I was waiting for "What Now " to start up at the end of that.

  • Apparently the female singer is Annie Crummer, and the first male voice is Bunny Walters.

  • Dalvanius is the second

  • Wow! Thanks for this!

  • Who is the singer? Tina Cross?

  • Did they play this at closedown too?

I only remember it at 6am

    Didnt tv1 use the kiwi?

  • This is what TV1 played at Closedown and startup during the late eighties and early nineties. TV2 had the goodnight kiwi.

They should bring it back between switching between TV1 programming and BBC World.

  • the goodnight kiwi has returned on tvnz channel 6 on freeview great eh!

  • Duncster, thanks for posting this, memories start flooding back, a real generational theme, those late nights were worth staying up for, turning down the volume on the tv set so you wouldn't wake up the parents, lol, thanks again duncster, this ending with the tv kiwi and tvnz closedown 1987 are my favourites, shot bro.

  • I have been looking forever for this vid. I can't thank you enough. :)

  • Excellent thanks 4 sharing, yes it all went 2 sh t when the channels went 24 hours no more close down and Goodnight Kiwi. Well not really what with saterllite/cable T.V. But on a funny note have U seen a ALT T.V. promo with a guy in the life sized T.V. Kiwi suit, it just doesn't seem right. ;-) Ah yes and didn't Relda Familton (R.I.P) have a beautiful voice on National Radio. :-)

  • lol love the guy at just after 2mins

  • I remember much of this as a young boy, catching this sometimes in the morning. Really wonderful rendition, stirs your heartstrings etc. Its a pity they dont do anything like this anymore on TVNZ.

  • What year is this closedown from?

  • Pure Gold

  • That's a cool video.

  • That was frickin awesome! Cheers for the upload.

  • ya dude awsome of u to upload it

  • Kinda cool to hear the "forgotten verses" of the anthem :-)

  • There are still another 2 english verses not used here, although one of the two is here in its maori version

  • also played at start of day after rolling teletext pages

  • ...and don't forget the test pattern before that!!!

  • I was wondering if anyone had a copy of this... awesome to see it again after all these years.
