Being a student / lover of great music with a message, I couldn't quite put my finger on why so much of recent music and performers had become so bland and uninspiring, and why this trend had gotten even worse over past 5-6 years. NOW I KNOW WHY!!
Having an opinion can be very costly, certainly the record labels will not take any chances. Strong opinions are needed for good art (yes even pop songs can be art). Way to go as#holes, I hope you "shut up and sing" types, enjoy your uhm music.
As mentioned, "freedom of speech" is a basic human right that many people around the world have, but the "potential" price tag for having that right is greater in the US, than in any other country. Given that the sticker price is unknown BEFORE someone opens their mouth, and given that money very much drives the American way of life, IMO, their is more self imposed censorship in America, than in other "freer" nations (less motivated by commerce).
Then again, LOTS of small unnoticed unproduced unsigned bands would LOVE to open for the Eagles... so if you significantly lower your expectations of the Dixie Chicks as a super group, then you could still say they are successful... sort of.
And maybe you have noticed.. 2 of those "strong women" did not move on, from country music anyway. CYHs are a country group, playing country music.
Like it or not, until the DC manage to put out a decent album that charts like in the old days, they are functionally defunct, relegated to opening band status and nostalgia tours.
Could they change that? Maybe. Would need a good PR firm and be willing to LISTEN to what the PR guys told them. Then... maybe...
But, if the majority of people supporting Nat's comments buy DC records, then their latest album would not be languishing at #45 on the COUNTRY charts...
(They dont even break the top 200 on the pop charts or any other charts.)
The 'supporters' of Nat were not as large a fan base as the fans they drove off, so their revenue dwindled.
@Leonid3s Wow considering how mediocre the songs are that they added onto the "Best of Dixie Chicks" album which you're referring to, i'm surprised it even charted. But since it got no airplay or nobody heard of it by word of mouth, it's a good thing that 3 years later at least SOMEONE has some interest. Don't forget, if you want people to buy your album, a little promotion goes a long way. And with this album receiving none, it's a miracle it charted in the first place.
@Leonid3s Also don't forget about the Court Yard Hounds, Martie and Emily's side project whos album, without receiving much airplay, also broke into the top 10 on the billboard charts. It shows there's still interest out there, and people are now willing to put aside a groups' political stance and still listen to th eir music. Quit attempting to be political pundits on a youtube channel. In the end, they'll still be making music, and building up a fan base, and we'll be eating it up.

Once they release new material together we'll see how they do. I'm not doubting their fan base has dwindled, it's obvious they have, but being the best selling female group in the US of any genre, they still have millions of fans who still support them. Toby Keith, on the other hand, has made more money since the DC's fell off the map due to lack of interest than the DC's ever made. In fact, all but one entertainer who was a contender with the DC"s for album of the year 2006 not only outsold the DC's that year, but have done so since. The one who didn't was a woman who's husband died, and she went on hiatus. They aren't rich at all.

Normally the DC albums debutted in the top ten. Three at #1.

@Leonid3s I believe their audience after 2003 was nothing more than agenda/conflict seekers. I don't believe the Courtyard Hounds album actually did as well as the charts indicate. Why? Every major player (Sony plus the major distributors) won big with the DC's earlier. They have everything to gain and nothing to lose by reporting huge shipments as sales, just like they did with the last DC album. If they drag Nat onstage during the upcoming Oz tour, I believe the sisters will lose all chance.

But, if the majority of people supporting Nat's comments buy DC records, then their latest album would not be languishing at #45 on the COUNTRY charts...
(They dont even break the top 200 on the pop charts or any other charts.)
The 'supporters' of Nat were not as large a fan base as the fans they drove off, so their revenue dwindled.

@Leonid3s Wow considering how mediocre the songs are that they added onto the "Best of Dixie Chicks" album which you're referring to, i'm surprised it even charted. But since it got no airplay or nobody heard of it by word of mouth, it's a good thing that 3 years later at least SOMEONE has some interest. Don't forget, if you want people to buy your album, a little promotion goes a long way. And with this album receiving none, it's a miracle it charted in the first place.

@Leonid3s Also don't forget about the Court Yard Hounds, Martie and Emily's side project whos album, without receiving much airplay, also broke into the top 10 on the billboard charts. It shows there's still interest out there, and people are now willing to put aside a groups' political stance and still listen to th eir music. Quit attempting to be political pundits on a youtube channel. In the end, they'll still be making music, and building up a fan base, and we'll be eating it up.

You think the CYHs are better than the DC? Is that why they charted higher?
Martie and Emily did little to throw gas on the fire after Nat's comment. Nat did. That is why country fans still are willing to listen to CYHs, imo.
Personally, I wish them all the best. DC in any genre except country, since they dont want to be country artists. And CYHs as a new country group.

@Leonid3s You don't understand...the DCs made the choice to keep certain fans like you turned off. Don't tell me that they couldn't have grovelled their way back into the CMI's good standing and fan support. That was a clear choice.. and you can't deny it....to leave you behind. That's reality.
We've never argued that the DC's would or would not maintain previous popularity levels but that they stood up against your push back and would survive as a succesful band. We've won that argument.

Yet even now, the only group listening to them in sufficient numbers to get their latest album in the top 200 ... is country.
And success is relative. They are currently charted in only one genre, country... and holding at 47? last I checked...
From super group status to opening for a nostalgia tour for the eagles and releasing an album that cant crack the top 25 in any genre.
Betting their lable doesnt consider that a success.

@Leonid3s They would first have to release new material to see what happens. A "best of" album with only a few of their top 40 hits in country and pop will not suffice. Once they release new material together we'll see how they do. I'm not doubting their fan base has dwindled, it's obvious they have, but being the best selling female group in the US of any genre, they still have millions of fans who still support them. In all fairness, i'm embarrassed just as much to have Arnold as govnuh.

The DC are marvelously talented. I have never denied that in the slightest.
Issues I normally address are the "she was denied her freedom of speech" or "everyone that doesnt agree with her should STFU" (strangely often coming from the same people!) Also popular once upon a time was the "they are bigger and better than ever."

The DC did the one thing an ENTERTAINER can not do and survive as a performer. They ignored the demographics of their fan base.
Country fans dont play nice. We dont forget.
Nat bashed Toby Keith for writing/recording/performing a song that said what many of us felt after 9/11. She continued that little bit of stupidity with the "FUTK" shirt on the awards show.
THEN she continued by bashing Reba, one of the Queens of Country Music.
Nope. No apology due the DC. None.

The DC's have moved on. It's obvious the apology is expected by you and your fellow deserters. It's not coming.
If they put out great music they will sell despite your hurt feelings. Accept it, you failed to own them and you were dumped...move on as they have.

It is interesting you think my 'feelings are hurt'. I am not that emotionally invested in any band. I was outraged at the comment when it was made, but that was long ago. I have "moved on" from outrage.
Now it is people watching. The number of 'supporters' that dont actually buy their products was an interesting revelation. There have been many more.

And I use this for my own purposes, which have almost nothing to do with the dixie chicks. This is more like 'people-watching' at the mall.
So, this "issue" doesnt "drive" me. I could do the same on any list where people often ignore objective reality in preference to their subjective opinions.

LOTS of people were against the war. About 10% of the population. (that is 3million for the math challenged) The second statement was an opinion. Lots of people didnt vote for Bush.

Bush acted like a President. The DC were not physically attacked. The fans used their freedom of speech to express their outrage at the statement. This is a Constitutionally protected Right. Bush had no legal grounds to interfer.

@jonnythong22 LOL. Even in liberal Canada where the media sells them as brilliant, they couldn't fill more than half the capacity of the venues. Stateside attendance was hardly better. I guess even with the draw of new style Keith Urban and the epic Eagles, the Dixie Twits still can't make a showing. No national media coverage, and the local reports say, "The Dixie Chicks also played". I used to say I was going to taking a dump in the toilet. Now, I'm off to drop a "natalie".

@jonnythong22 My average income is about equal to the Dixie CHicks individual profits over the same time frame. Toby Keith, on the other hand, has made more money since the DC's fell off the map due to lack of interest than the DC's ever made. In fact, all but one entertainer who was a contender with the DC"s for album of the year 2006 not only outsold the DC's that year, but have done so since. The one who didn't was a woman who's husband died, and she went on hiatus. They aren't rich at all.

They got tossed by their original fan base for being disingenuous on a subject millions were having to take deadly serious. Their response? Lets bash everyone, including the people that gave them national exposure and the ones that made them famous in the first place. Nat even managed to bash Joan Baez (who supported her on Grammy night). They bashed themselves off the stage.

@Therealmensa What I found interesting... after M ranted June 1st about the new DC album and how this was going to launch them back into the spotlight, "although they were never gone"... the ONLY genre the DC album broke the top 200 in... was country.
It debuted at 27 and dropped almost immediately to 43. After 11 weeks on the COUNTRY chart, it is now at 45.
Normally the DC albums debutted in the top ten. Three at #1.
Wonder why all those non-country supporters are not buying albums?

@Leonid3s I believe their audience after 2003 was nothing more than agenda/conflict seekers. I don't believe the Courtyard Hounds album actually did as well as the charts indicate. Why? Every major player (Sony plus the major distributors) won big with the DC's earlier. They have everything to gain and nothing to lose by reporting huge shipments as sales, just like they did with the last DC album. If they drag Nat onstage during the upcoming Oz tour, I believe the sisters will lose all chance.
