Wow this piece is amazing... her playing is very strong and skillful and at the end she looks absolutely exhausted! I'm not surprised, it's a very difficult piece...
There actually were some bad notes but that's not important. I've never heard ANY live concerto without bad notes (and one of very experienced conductors I've been talking to sad that he'd never conducted/heard ANY concerto without bad notes).
She will be performing Tchaikovsky with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra May 26-29 2011. I am VERY excited to be able to go and see her. Will be an awesome concert!
She looks exhausted, and I'm not surprised. She played this amazingly well. Screw a couple of little mistakes; she's only human, and the fact that this piece is humanly possible in the first place is something to think about, bearing in mind Rachmaninoff's technique and physical aspects. I'd love to play this one day... but even having Grade 8 ain't gonna be much help... this would probably be Grade 16, if it existed.
@alexface211 well said, she did great - what an amazing piece this is - I agree the fact that anyone can play it is a miracle. I was having piano lessons a while ago and had the sheet music for this with me as I was stupidly trying (and failing) to play a very small part of it. I'd already realised I was completely out of my depth but my piano teacher saw the sheet music and said "I'D like to be able to play that one day!" Beyond the reach of most people, and most pianists this is :)
If this girl wasn't put together like brick, well, you know, I would worry about her, that she could shake herself apart at one of these performances. This dramatics Lang Lang syndrome is apparently catching, women are not immune. What would have Rachmaninov himself have thought of the sight here, never mind the sound?
I was lucky enough to be at her performance last November at Geneva, NY. She was performing Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto. That was divine, magnificent! She is an amazing pianist, very, very talented. I wish she would play the Rach 3 there. But I am happy with everything she performs.
I love this performance so much!! And I've watched it so many times, I'm beginning to notice weird things.... First off, one of the trumpet players looks like George Bush. Second, she is wearing what appears to be a Green Lantern necklace. And finally, the conductor almost drops his baton just after the end of the performance.
It's interesting. Nearly every pianist I've seen (including Janis) who plays this concerto has had to pause in the last set of interlocking chordal arpeggios where the orchestra plays attending A-D-F#-A chords on the off-beats, or else the pianist & orchestra cannot finish the last ten unison chords perfectly in sync. I'm not criticizing Ms. Kern. She's astonishing. Just making an observation that Rach wrote this concerto so complex that it is a veritable minefield for soloist & orchestra.
La mejor interprete que he disfrutado en años..es increible...espero poder tener el gran honor de verla tocar en vivo alguna vez.Es ecvidente que tiene una perfecta comunion con esta pieza y con mi amado Rachmaninof..
God i love the ending of this. Its got to be the richest most vibrant finale ive ever heard. I love his second, and the ending is great but this, well this is on a whole other level. Simply breathtaking :)
Thank you for the upload! I can't say for sure that this recording is better than any other recording I have heard. But I can say that it was stellar and immensely enjoyable to watch. Her rendition of this piece is outstanding. I think being able to watch her perform added to the experience - her expression and enthusiasm is a perfect complement for this already emotionally stirring music. I enjoyed every moment.
She was amazing in this movement. Spellbinding. A blazing red hammer smashing through all previous notions of what this piece was supposed to sound like.
What the hell did she do at the end of the piece? I watched so many performances; the first thing the soloists do is skake the conductor's hand. What a disappointment!!!
omg wow i was thinking the same thing!!! lol! i was even like "well technically she's the star so maybe..." but even when star performers play they first shake the conductor's hand!
Get real. She is acknowledging the adoring crowd who came to see her. They could care less who the conductor is. In fact, the audience can't even see the conductor most of the time because of the raised piano lid. She is fully aware of the conductor and his importance in pulling off a performance like this - and he is fully aware that she is the one deserving of the first praise to be awarded. In a concerto featuring a virtuoso soloist, she gets first place and everyone in the orchestra knows it
I never said the conductor should get the first praise. When have you ever seen a conductor got a first praise, or got praised more than the soloist. In fact we all have seen that soloists got more praised and also the first praise.
I only meant that it would be nicer if she shaked the conductor's hand first.
One more thing, when I go to a concerto, I see the soloist (65%), the orchestra (35%).
If I only want to hear the piano (see just the soloist), I'll go to the recital.
she is amazing i think, my favourite player of it in nthis concert, her very ending is without doubt the best performance - meaning the last ten bars!!
While there are moments of imperfection, overall her performance is wonderful. She plays with so much passion, and her intensity & power are electrifying. I adore piano concertos, especially the Russian school, and this is my very favorite one. I applaud Olga Kern, and all younger musicians who adhere to a higher standard, artistically, in this world of mediocrity. Thanks DC788 for offering this gem to me!
Well why don't you post a recording of you doing the same I'm sure we will give you 5stars as well. (if you could pull something like this off... that it is.)
you first; I said she was good, and when I saw her in concert this past spring I told her as much in person; I just noted that this recording is not the greatest one ever. I would expect she would concur with my assessment, but what do I know, having studied and taught for over 35 years. I just love the hyperbole and effusive praise heaped on this site by fans; to get where she is is a testament of her incredible abilities, but I think others like, oh, Kissin, Horowitz, etc., are better.
I have watched all 5 parts many many a time, I'm am so amazed and uttery agog seeing Olga play Rach3. Once in a life time does this happen ? I think so !!
Doubtful you will ever hear a more passionate performance of any piece of music period. Even the conductor looks a little stunned at the end! Have heard many performances of this piece but not one as electrifying as this one.
Esse final é do caralho!!!! Puta que pariu, adoraria ver isso ao vivo...
Thanks for uploading it!!
