  • "Fire" on The SMiLE Sessions is definitively better for me

  • I agree, the new Smile album is great, but this is what I listened to originally, still a great album, especially for the times. Compare to other albums in 67 they took some chances, thats for sure!

  • This album is not simple, its far out :D ~

  • The greatness of this slice of drug fueled dementia goes beyond what mere mortal words can express. Just imagine Woody Woodpecker tripping his face off and listening to his own theme song. This song would probably be what he's hearing in his altered state.

  • "Fall Breaks, Back to Winter" soundtrax us thru the darkening prevening. SMiLE

  • I prefer Smiley Smile versions than the 2004' Smile ones

  • Smiley Smile is actually a very depressing album.

  • @PigsSantaAndBacon

yes, but I need it! it is so dark and so haunting, like there's a shadow hanging over the music!

  • What I never understood:

    1) Fact: the Smile tapes were almost complete but the sessions were cancelled. Brian probably changed the arrangements of certain songs from Smile for Smiley Smile coz he wanted to forget the bad experience. The least he could do is release it in their original forms since the content was part of Smile anyway. All it needed was a good mixing.

    2) Mike Love's resistance to Smile is useless. Our Prayer, Cabin Essence and Surf's Up eventually saw the light of day.

  • PLEASE READ: IF U WANT TO HEAR SMiLE by THE BEACH BOYS, NOT BRIAN WILSON, GO 2 MY CHANNEL AND GO TO MY PLAYLISTS AND SELECT THE ONE THAT SAYS "Smile 1967(SMiLE)" it contains original recordings by the Beach Boys

  • This is Fire from the original Smile. WHY didn't they use the original studio sessions instead of theses watered down versions? Every original Smile song that ended up on this turd was already recorded, just not mixed. After all that hype of the original this is released? Who was going to take this seriously? Especially after Sgt. Pepper....

  • The Beatles had Sergeant Pepper; the Stones had Their Satanic Majestiie's Request; and the Beach Boys had Smiley Smile--a triumphant of Psychedelic Masterpieces--MisterMisanthropy

  • @michaelmisanthrope

    xDDDDDDDDDDDD

the stones psychedelic copy of the majesty of of sgt pepper is one of the worst albums they ever did.

it's nothing but an odditiy, deserves no mention on a duscussion about the band.

they were good in many genres, but psychedelia, no.

  • That's an electric organ yeah, it was used like the synths on Love You as the basic track.

  • It must have broken Brian Wilson's heart in 1967 to have to sacrifice his work on Smile and be forced to release the watered down Smiley Smile. It's no wonder he went to bed.

  • The BUM BUM BUM sound is Brian's new Baldwin electric organ which is all over the Smiley Smile album; Gettin' Hungry, Wind Chimes and Heroes and Villians included.

  • @Bisson79 i love this album!

  • @Bisson79 really thats an organ?

  • @SmileySmileAM Yeah, that's his baldwin electric organ, then they have a squeezebox to do the woodpecker theme.

  • @Bisson79

A baldwin electric organ cannot make that "bum bum bum" sound, and a squeezebox is an accordion which is way different than the sound to that woodpecker sound. Brian Wilson did the "BUM BUM BUM" sound which is similar to the deep tone they did in roll plymouth rock

  • @RetroAndrew

Yes, I admit I did think the 'bum bum' was in reference to the basic track of the organ. That is a voice actually vocalising 'bum bum', I just always heard it was 'woh woh'. As for the squeezebox, I was going by the liner notes in the smiley smile/wild honey two-fer. As with all things to do with the Smile period and after the truth takes a long time to get out.

  • @Bisson79

Bloody hell, I always assumed that low "bom bom bom" was a VOICE...jeez, I gotta get myself one of those baldwin organs!

  • @addylewis

The "BUM BUM BUM" is a voice. He accidently thought when someone said "what is that bum bum bum sound?" he thought he meant the organ that is making a bass like sound. You can say the organ sounds like a bum bum bum sound as well.

  • what's making that creepy BUM BUM BUM sound?

  • I listen to this album stoned while going to sleep sometimes. This song scares the shit out of me.

  • This is such a pleasant song that it may cause nightmares if one listens to this before the lights are turned off at night. This song is true artistry. Does anyone think of a walrus while listening to this?

  • This is a great album if you happen to be on drugs. It helps if you're hard of hearing too.

  • I like the bit where it goes *Clang*Tap*Tap* OooooooohOoohOooohOooohOooooooooh

  • Damn strange album, but I like it!

  • Wow! Scary!

  • This would be great accompaniement to some piquant transitional scene in a Coen Brothers film

  • Well, the Woodpecker aspect is, of course, the theme from the Walter Lantz shorts --- 'C - F - A - C - A' (try it on some instrument.) As it happens, the key in this version is the same as the one in the films (check that on this site!) It also happens to be the same utterance as in early Bugs Bunny films, both coming from Mel Blanc.

  • Psychedellic music just blows me away. ii cant wait til my b-day April 9th to get this album!

  • Wilson was damn clever, but unfortuneately he could fart on vinyl and some of you idiots not having any power of discrimination, call it genius. lol Frank Zappa had the same problem !

  • A remake of Mrs O'leary's Cow, yes. Still, it's awesome. In fact, all of Smiley Smile is psychedelic-ly awesome.

  • This track is hypnotic! Love it.

  • @dmcguire70 THE WAY IT WAS MEANT

  • Being a powerless remake of "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow", this is rather pointless.... give me the original!

  • Powerless? Nah. This version is good in its own way. Granted, a final "Mrs.O'Leary's Cow" would have probably been better, but that doesn't mean this isn't good.

  • @NyeTunes AMEN

  • Just a few years earlier Mike was saying that Good Vibrations was almost "too weird" for BB fans, I wodnder he felt during the recording session for this.

  • genius

  • whats W. Woodpeck?

  • @SmileySmileAM

    "Woody Woodpecker Symphony"

    Why? I don't know. =)

  • Love this spooky little tune...Brian is at his best with these strange little songs...I think this album, Surf's Up & Holland are his best records...the feel-good beach songs are alright but I like Brian's odder less 'beach-blanket' songs...he needed more room to create & he fought to get stuff like this on his lp's...he had a lot more to produce than just the beachy stuff...

  • @absoluteabsence brian wilson had almost nothing to do with either of those albums... with Holland he was in the studio maybe once, and on Aurf's Up they just hijacked a Smile-sessions song... although "till I die" is a brilliant new tune, and his last, in my opinion. Anyway, if you don't think Pet Sounds is by far the Beach Boys' and brian's best work, you're fooling yourself.A masterpiece in every sense.

  • @Benefit1970 I'd say the original Smile is definitely up there. I can't wait for the release of the Smile sessions later this year! :)

  • Damon Albarn must have heard this song before writing the Demon Days LP

  • This needs its place as part of a children's movie soundtrack.

  • it should be in the new Alice & Wonderland movie being directed by Tim Burton

  • After listening to Smiley Smile it's easy to see where The Residents got some of their ideas.

  • I love this song and, as I've said about Smile, it's a bit like being in a theme park of Americana- this is it's ghost train.

  • i like this song.

  • What is the deep laughing sound - really creepy!

  • "Mike Loves Smile" is more like it.

  • This would have been perfect for the music on a Twilight Zone episode. Just think about it.

  • A very good album that was misunderstood at the time. However, I prefer the BWPS version of Wind Chimes.

  • Polygor, Wind Chimes was/is a completely different track for the original SMiLE.

  • I know.

  • Something bothers me with this. If Brian Wilson was emotionally distraught with his recordings of Fire, then how could he make a recomposition of essentially the same song without being totally distraught? This is fire slightly slower, but at the same time, not as sinister. Anyways, quite an interesting composition. Does anyone know how he's making that "pecking" sound?

  • The "pecking" sounds like a high-pitched woodblock. Also, this album is VERY complex. I think it was panned originally because it was not "Smile". But when you hear this record away from the context of the turmoil surrounding the news of "Smile" in the 60's (which I was not born to experience), it stands on its own.

  • the other beach boys including Carl literally were taking the "smile" master tapes out of the vault and trying to release SOMETHING while Brian was out of it... "surfs up" was finished at a time when brian wouldnt leave his rooom and they didnt know how to finish it, brian heard the song coming through the walls and appeared in the recording studio in a robe out of nowhere and told them how to finish it... then he went back to his room. "Mike Love's SMiLE" is about right...

  • This song is the true battle between smile and smiley smile.

  • It's nice to compare the two albums and see how different they used the same material. The vocal part in this song for example can be heard in "Mrs O'Leary's Cow" on the SMiLE album.

  • I dunno I like both albuums all the same. I like the strangeness and the physcadelic vibe. Thats just me. It was Brian Wilson answer to Pet sounds

  • @Alixx2 RIGHT!!!

  • Smiley Smile is far better than people give it credit.

  • It certainly is an underrated album. When it first was released I think people had expected something much more complex, but I think it's brilliant in it's simpleness. :-)

  • Your right. Just like the white album and let it be. Its so simple that most people don't understand it.

  • Brilliant in its simplicity -- that says it all. Nice comment.

  • @Alixx2 its actualy just mike love taking brian's and van dykes image and tearing it into peices, "its as if smile took an acid trip through hell" is what van dyke refers too it as. Theres a reason this album is underated fucking idiots, perfect example is just compare the cabin essance from the smiley smile version too smiles version you will see the obvious differance.

  • @smiley66goodvibes67 I agree. Some songs kind of suck, but Whistle In, With Me Tonight, Fall Breaks, Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations are great songs. Most of the other Smile songs are pretty good as well. I just hate She's Goin' Bald.

  • @DoGeeseSeeGod24 Agree with you ; SMILEY is a great album and even SGB has grown on me over the years but i didnt used to like it either. You forgot Wonderful of which the SS version is the best version as is Vegetables

  • @smiley66goodvibes67 its just smile slowed down only an idiot would like this? its a stupid moronic "acid trip though hell" version of smile. smile is supposed too be an array of sounds that crashes into your eardrums like a syphany, taking out all the things that made the album great and slowing it down is stupidity. this album was released only too make money and brian had VERY little say in smiley smile.

  • @liamrocksmysockstm It's ironic because Mike Love has a reputation for dismissing "SMiLE" as drug hogwash back then.

And yet look what happened when he chose to do "Smiley Smile" instead.
