Someone help I get hangnails on my thumb all the time. I have one now and it's really annoying they never not hurt it's killing me! I heard having longer nail help prevent them but I play basketball and it's hard to really get a good grip on the ball and stuff with longer nails so typically I keep them shorter. But why do hangnails hurt so bad? That what I wanted to know. Someone please help:)

@everyonegocrazy same here, except i broke through the side tissue and pushed out the pus. and kept pushing till it is bleeding. Then I just put some aftershave(stings hardcore) and am waiting for the next day. But I've read to place the finger in hot water about 2-3 times a day and drain the pus out. Might go to the doctor tomorrow and check it out if it's ok or not. Damn stupid ass infections.

@everyonegocrazy then what you do is carefully take a needle or something sharp, and heat it up to clean it so you won't get infected. Then, make a small hole with the needle. Then, Carefully, with gloves, push hard to get all the pus out. This is going to hurt. Then, put oitment on the broken hangnail. Last, eat some icecream or something cold, to keep your temperature cooler, and slows down the sore pain.

I would just clean it, and bandage. And of course I would keep alert for any sign of infection aswell.

Oil and water? That won't do much. Sterile saline or Benzalkonium Chloride to clean the wound is recommended. If possilbe, you should have used a finger bandage instead of using a regular bandaid. Finally, Anti-bacterial cream/ ointment is not recommened as it can prevent the wound from healing efficiently & can keep an excess of bateria in the wound.
