His victories are more of a mark of how much republican voters feel they have no ideal candidate. What they want is someone who's pro-war, pro-life, pro-gun, anti-imigrant, anti-tax, and anti-gay; NONE of the candidates fit all of those things, so they have to pick and choose which issues they care most about. McCain has national name recognition, so it puts him ahead of the others who, with the exception of Guilliani, were basically unknown outside of their inner circles.
