@stevencool104 LOL they aren't Canadians. If you speak shit English and have only been here for a mere three years, I don't care, you aren't a Canadian.
Of course UBC is too Asian. All the school cares about is getting international students because of the excessive amount of tuition they pay. Why get domestic kids when foreigners will pay 3-4x as much! What is even worse is that no one provides the statistics of how many foreign students actually stay in Canada. I knew a guy from Iran who got into UBC Dentistry so he could go back to Iran and make more money than an Iranian trained dentist. Pathetic on his part and on UBC for accepting him!
The meritocracy fails because meritocratic ideas cannot combat social inequality based on race and gender. The Asian speaker should form a diversity alliance with white women to get a broad coalition to combat discrimination.
Henry Yu on the panel? He is the one who wrote in the Vancouver Sun that Kitsilano is too white, "white as the driven snow".
The whole fuss over the MacLean's article is a publicity stunt. Yu knows very well that there is nothing offensive in the article. Shame on UBC for putting on this scam panel just to appease these resentment mongers.
If you want to learn more about the history of Chinese Canadians, there are some good Web sites. Try looking up "Chinese Canadian" at the CBC Web site. For those who don't know about CTV's W5 episode, "Campus Giveaway", you can read about it at the Chinese Canadian National Council Web site.
For another example of reaction to the "Too Asian?" article, the Ryerson Students' Union writes:
"According to this article, universities are a space created for the white, dominate population, and minority groups are taking away from their experiences. This notion is problematic, as it creates a divide on campuses that are seeking to build an inclusive community. As a city we must take a stand by publicly rejecting the racism perpetuated by this article."
By defending the "Too Asian?" article, Margaret Wente of the Globe and Mail attempts to perpetuate the stereotypes. This is very disappointing and disconcerting. I only wish that the UBC panel in the YouTube video could have condemned Margaret Wente's article.
They were factually correct in their statement about U of T and Asians. Just like if I say a criminal in America is probably a black man, I am correct.
But if I say that I avoid black people because they're dangerous, I'm racist.
I also think people don't understand boarding/private school culture. I went to a similar girls--only school as the two white girls profiled in the original Maclean's article. And yes, when I graduated, the vast majority of the students who picked U of T were of Asian descent. The girls are NOT WRONG.
oh so is another day of useless self-jerking talks in the "at least 50% of you asians will be unemployed upon graudation" university of british columbia from the country of KKKanada!
@mcline007 (Latinos como es por lo que nos da una reputacion e la chignada en canada) That is the point, I was using stereotypes to make a joke. And I can see from you spanglish that it works. Warm regards.
Ok whities, lets make a deal; let 's Chinese get all the scholarships, you get all the jobs, and we Latinos get all the hot girls. Is that fair to you now? No more complaints?
do forget there are many european immigrants in this country speak worse english than asian. As I know , many of them don't require TOFEL, is it fair?
people like us have to pass a tofel test as well as high school in other to enroll into any university. I had a canada born white friend, he can only get 520 score on his tofel, while we were doing this for fun. If you are white and can't even get into any university, you are simply shit.
LPI is even harder for international students to pass. Many international students took LPI three times or more. One of friends has consulted UBC counsellor about LPI. UBC counsellor said that students must pass LPI in their first year. Many students are forced to drop out of UBC because they can't pass LPI within that period... So did you know that those students who are not good at English actually get kicked out?
Also put yourself in their shoes. Think about what if you go to a foreign language and try to speak the foreign languages in an English accent. People may not understand you because of your foreign accent and you may get embarrassed.
Btw, TOFEL is actually NOT easy to pass for people who studied English in a non-English speaking country. Many students spent years learning English to pass that test.
I am actually in support of what Henry Yu has said. Most Asian friends I have at UBC have a decent understanding of English. They read textbooks and understand English with no problem. I sometimes admire them because I think I may not be able to a second language that good if I didn't live in an English-speaking country. It is true that these students may be not good at speaking English. But knowing a language is not all about speaking.
canada is being overtaken by communists. these yellow fucks are up to no good and is a waste of resources. canada is white man's land and there is no room for anyone else. canada colleges belongs to canadians. if you aint white you aint canadian. why would anyone want to work so hard just to beat some asians for a college spot while these are ours to begin with.
Just realized that Henry Yu said that everyone at UBC speaks English at a "high level." Therefore, for me to prove that he's wrong or lying, there just needs to be ONE Asian UBC student (really, any person of any race since he said "everyone") who speaks poor English.
I think no one here is stupid enough to argue about the fact that there is at least one person at UBC who speaks poor English.
Notice I didn't say "90% of Asians at UBC speak bad English" or "the majority of Asians at UBC speak bad English." I said "many." So even if only 10% speak bad English, "many" would still be true.
That I am Asian and speak good English does not disprove that fact. Please go learn basic logic.
If I said "Many Canadians are on welfare", but I am a Canadian and not on welfare, does that make the first statement false?
Yes, the truth and objective facts cannot be racist.
Telling someone they have small eyes is not a fact, that's subjective. (Small according to who?) Could it be racist? Perhaps, depends on the context.
Now if you said, "Your eyes are 3.2 cm wide" that would be a fact, and couldn't be racist.
And wow, are you an idiot?
I said, many Asians at UBC speak bad English. I guess you can argue about what "many" means. But since there are hundreds of people like that, that makes it a fact.
The truth cannot be racist? Then calling Asians with small eyes: "small eyes" is not racist? Wow!!
I'm in denial? You're supposedly an Asian UBC student who speaks good English and says many Asians at UBC speak bad English. You yourself are an exception to your argument. Thus by your logic, you are abnormal (or superior, which I guess is how you see it.)
The "idiot" deems it pointless to argue with someone who relies only on their own experience and cheap insults, calling that the "truth."
Is it racist to say that everyone at UBC speaks good English? Yes, if that is a lie and the reason you are lying is to make Asians look good.
Saying that many Asians at UBC speak bad English is not racist, but the truth. The truth cannot be racist.
I did not say no brown, black, or white people speak bad English. I said I have never met any of them. I'm sure they exist, but there are not many of them.
I'm really tired of idiots calling the truth "words of hate". You're just in denial.
Speaking English is not a pre-requesite for being Canadian. When you get your citizenship they say implictly- welcome to a country where you can keep your language, culture, and traditions from back home. As for Dr. Yu's statement, he is simply stating that there are mechanisms in place at UBC to make sure an adequate level of English is there (min LPI and TOEFL). Essentially he is saying there really is no language crisis. Maclean's took some first year surveys and created a faux-controversy
Second.... we cannot make the assumption that just because individuals like to use their home language or first language in dialogue with their peers... that they are bad in English. You will be surprised how in English, like many of us are in Mandarin and other languages, certain individuals will be stronger in lets say "reading" or "writing" as they don't train their oral skills as much at home. Why not learn other languages to match the playing field instead of complain about "Asians"?
"During 5 years at UBC, I have never met a white, brown, or black person who spoke poor English, but I have met many Asians who did. I am Asian myself by the way."
The statement above is simply absurd. If you go into engineering quarters or take some classes with exchange students you will see that they struggle with English. A lot of these students that "don't speak english" are exchange students, many of which make up for their language skills with a high intellect that is of benefit for UBC.
I'm curious about these "brown" people who are somehow not Asian that you mentioned. (Asia = 48 countries)
If you want to criticize your school or your race, go ahead. But don't call someone a racist unless you can actually point to racism. Saying everyone at UBC speaks English well isn't racist. Saying many Asian immigrants speak bad English (and not a single white, brown, or black student does) sounds like racism. Words of hate are still words of hate, regardless of who says them to whom.
"Easy" is relative & subjective. If we're talking about those who grew up in Canada speaking & studying English, then English class may be easy (in comparison to) recent immigrants from non-English speaking countries, whom I have tutored, and would find your assessment cruel. They had to work very hard to become proficient in English.
Conditional admission is not automatic admission into UBC. It first requires 12 months of study & a minimum 75%/level 600 on all English tests.
Even a bad ESL student can still scrape by with a 50 or 55% in English in high school. As for conditional admission, it proves that Henry Yu is lying when he said "You cannot get into UBC if you don't speak a high level of English." When they first enter they cannot speak English well. Thus he is a liar, or at best woefully ignorant.
During 5 years at UBC, I have never met a white, brown, or black person who spoke poor English, but I have met many Asians who did. I am Asian myself by the way.
Your comments are irrelevant, and a strawman argument.
Did I say that Henry Yu was lying when he said that racism existed in the past and exists now? No.
What I said, was that Henry Yu is willing to lie if the truth makes Asians look bad. I proved this by giving an example of such a lie.
As for "none of the ways being easy", that is false. 70% for the provincial English exam is not hard. Completing high school in a Canadian school is not hard either.
There are also many Asian UBC students who speak English quite well, immigrant or not. I've had Asian classmates with superb speaking skills and non-Asian classmates who struggled with English. The real UBC student body is not so easily divided into only 2 groups. We must be careful not to overgeneralize.
Yes, he must be lying about racism towards Asians. No one is saying bad things about Asians, even on the web. I don't believe in the KKK or those other historical events he mentioned which are agreed upon by most Asian & non-Asian historians. Molson commercials have plenty of Asians...somewhere...um...in the background...maybe...
There are 8 ways, but none are easy. Conditional admission involves taking classes @ UBC ELI. Why would UBC have its own English Language Institute but not use it?
Henry Yu is racist....in favour of Asians. He is simply a liar, who lies if it makes Asians look good.
For example, he says that you have to speak a "high level of English" to get into UBC. Anyone who goes to UBC knows this is false, there are lots of Asian immigrants who can barely speak English. There are eight ways to pass UBC"'s English requirement, and if you fail all of them you can still apply for conditional admission.
Hard to understand these dialogues. Maclean's didn't say that Universities are "too asian", but that some people think they are. I think they presented those people as dumb. I don't get the controversy.
@stevencool104 LOL they aren't Canadians. If you speak shit English and have only been here for a mere three years, I don't care, you aren't a Canadian.
