Shanahan's video explains it great. Salo made a clean hit on Marchand 16 seconds prior to the clip, and Marchand was pissed. Salo ignored Marchand punching him. When going for the puck, Marchand made a predatory hit. He was the aggressor in the play.
The difference between THIS and that, is that THIS was a textbook hipcheck. Hamhuis was on the defensive end.

In Marchands Clip, Salo isnt facing him, its from behind, marchands back makes contact at around the knee cap area and he doesnt use any strength to push him up and over he basicly table tops him, and salos momentum carries him over top

It was a freak thing, more so the spot on the rink than the hit itself. At most it was a bit late.

Hamuis threw a check leading with hip. Tiny Marchand just bends over and takes out Salo's legs from under him. Not to mention that Salo never even got to the puck before being submarined. How can one person be so ignorant as to say these hits are the same? 1) Hamhuis is COMMITTED to the check on Lucic and hits him well within arm + stick length after the pucked is released. 2) Hamhuis' hit is at high speed whereas the Marchand/Salo is almost at a toddler sprint. 3) Hamhuis' bend of the leg was against the natural bend because he's cutting in for the hit. Marchand ducked down low because that's his style, to take others out and there was no play for the puck
Marchand's should not be a penalty because he clearly (in slow mo) contacted thigh not knee. Hamhuis' should be a penalty as you can see he even uses his hand on the knee to flip him worse. All the puck and direction crap you people mention has nothing to do with the clipping rule, go read it.

There is a difference. One is hockey play, the other is an attempt to injure. But Boston fans won't be happy until one of their players' kills a Canuck on the ice, and of course they'll feel it won't deserve a penalty.
They were both clipping but penalties tend to be lax in playoffs for god knows what reason (by which I mean they should either be lax all the time or called all the time).
Does it fucking matter if they're the same hit? Hamhuis was done for the series after that hit, I suspect that was enough discipline enough. Losing Hamhuis was a turning point in this series. You could even argue that it cost them the series. Get over it.

Main difference is that Lucic had the puck and Hamhuis went to hit him. Marchand on the other hand had the puck and to avoid getting hit takes out the players knees. Point is Marchand should have just took the hit not ducked under it. Both are very low hits though I agree. But there is a difference when you are going after a guy with the puck.

How can one person be so ignorant as to say these hits are the same? 1) Hamhuis is COMMITTED to the check on Lucic and hits him well within arm + stick length after the pucked is released. 2) Hamhuis' hit is at high speed whereas the Marchand/Salo is almost at a toddler sprint. 3) Hamhuis' bend of the leg was against the natural bend because he's cutting in for the hit. Marchand ducked down low because that's his style, to take others out and there was no play for the puck

Marchand's should not be a penalty because he clearly (in slow mo) contacted thigh not knee. Hamhuis' should be a penalty as you can see he even uses his hand on the knee to flip him worse. All the puck and direction crap you people mention has nothing to do with the clipping rule, go read it.

@nick5448 Having the puck has nothing to do with clipping. If a guy is about to hit you has nothing to do with clipping. Read the rule. Marchand delivered a hip check since it was ABOVE THE KNEE.
a player drops o a near-crouching stance and swings his hips toward an opposing player, sending the opponent off balance, often falling to the ice. Mostly done up against the boards. A hit at or below the knees is considered an infraction in the National Hockey League, and called "clipping".

Marchand hit = ILLEGAL! blindside. he ducked at the last minute and went WAY too low. It is not the time or place for a hip check and his was fully intending to injure. Marchand is one of the dirtiest hockey players and would intend to injure... he had no intent on going for the puck. If you watch earlier in the play, marchand was giving salo quite a few shots to the head. i am pretty sure he wanted to hurt salo... but why though? salo is a classy veteran and has earned his name in the league.

Hamhuis hit = LEGAL! hip to hip. definitely NOT at the knee level or close to marchand's level. Lucic had plenty of time to see him coming. it is a perfectly valid hockey play that occurs all the time. No intent to injure. Dan is one of the most genuine hockey players and wouldn't intend to injure.

Marchand didn't get suspended because of the hit, he got suspended because of his intent to injure. Apparently he thought Salo was coming at him at full speed and was gonna knock his head off(which he wasn't, it's Sami freakin Salo.) SO instead of embracing himself for the hit or getting out of the way, he goes low and flips him over. That's intent to injure and if you Bruins fans don't think so, then you're just ignorant.
