Look how happy he was playing this song. This is one cool cat, someone I wished I could have met or hung out with for a day. He's prob. a legend in N.O.
To Fats : I don't know if you remember me or not, but I have never forgotten you. Thirty-two years ago you stopped a group of black kids from McDonough 19 from beating up an 8-year-old white kid. in front of your house. (Just for being white in the 9th Ward).
Your compassion towards a complete stranger has been one of the guiding examples of my life. Whenever faced with racism like this I have always been able to look back at your kindnes and that of a few others to assure me that not all black people hate us whites, and write off their actions as personal ignorance. Your example has allowed me to accept and treat people on an individual basis. I have looked up to you my whole life.
When I heard that you were still missing I was extremely saddened. I have prayed for you as often and as fervently as I have for those of my own kin still fighting the odds down there. It was with great relief that I viewed the picture of you being helped to safety. Thank God you are safe.
Some of my friends and family are still missing and some are accounted for but trapped in their communities until Monday.
I hope that all of your loved ones are safe as well. Bless you. I have always wanted to thank you for all that you did for me. From deep in my heart you have my thanks and admiration.
How's Fats Domino doing these days? I remember the relief I felt when he was found alive after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home. He must be, what, 83 now? Does he ever make public appearances?
@GeorgiaKev Fats turned 83 at the end of February. He still lives in the New Orleans area but has yet to return to his 9th Ward home that he was living in at the time Katrina struck. He was very ill with diabetes symptoms when he was found after Katrina and was treated at LSU after being rescued. He's very reclusive and friends back home tell me that sadly, his mind has begun to slip. He likely won't be in the public eye much anymore and his performing days are certainly over. A true legend.
@RobdaVegasMailman Damn. That makes me so sad. I know his wife passed several years ago. I felt like the biggest idiot back in 2005 when I heard that Fats Domino was missing (I had thought he'd passed away a long time ago). But then my embarrassment turned to sadness and concern. I was ecstatic when they found him. Have you ever read Scott A. Keon's letter to Fats shortly after Hurricane Katrina? That letter alone showed the great character Fats Domino has.
@RobdaVegasMailman Here's an interview Fats Domino gave in Feb. 2006, just six months afte Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and everything he'd saved for 50+ years. But one thing that hurricane didn't take....his sense of humor and his great piano-playing ability!
Puisque il est toujours vivant... alors trés longue vie à l'une des plus grandes légendes de la musique.... demeure toujours près de nous, dans notre âme... Longue vie à toi Fats... Un grand merci à tous ceux qui ont publié ces vidéos....
@nappykat73 Yeah he is still alive. He is 83 now. This video is from a concert in Los Angeles I wanna say around 1985. His last on stage performance was in May 2007 at Tipitinia's in New Orleans. He has a new CD and video out available through the Tipitinas Foundation which is a non profit raising money to put instruments in schools. Aside from general health problems he is alive and kicking.
@Gary198101 That's good news about his health. I remember he was missing after Katrina for several days. They showed a clip on the news of the rescuers helping him out. He looked so old and half dead. It made me worry about his long-term health.
