Hello, congratulation you is a very inspirational artist, it's very cool to see your work process, some times when I watch I think the backgrounds is made in photoshop, and how much time you spend to do one ? and generally how much background is doing for one episode
I love your work truly inspiring. I make studies of your backgrounds to practise. Its so awesome to see you actually paint. I figured you were a fan of stencils and sponges, but the big badger blender, airbrush for water and the transfer paper were all new. Thankyou for sharing please post some more.
thankyou for the tutorial i am trying to work on traditional art and this really helpme to understand more about stencil an brush technichs in little format
The backgrounds in Samurai Jack are magnificent, and as shown in this video, painted with great artistry and simple elegance. Absolutely the BEST background work to be seen on TV, ever.
@daregularperson Yes I'm the painter. The paint is Cel-Vinyl from Cartoon Color and the board is Crescent Illustration Board No. 310 (cold press). I use an HP-C Iwata airbrush (mostly to wet the board), a flat brush for washes such as a Grumbacher Aquarelle 1", a Grumbacher "Badger Blender" and a good sable brush size 4 or 5. The drawing is transfered to the board with Saral Transfer Paper (usually blue).
@renwaldo5 Very cool, thanks for the info on your equipment. I love your color choices. I subscribed, so I hope you will show us some more great videos!
That would be Cartoon Color Cell Vinyl. Works like acrylics but comes premixed more opaque. He would also mix a little liquitex in for richer deeper colors when needed.
@nuttylamb My guess is he's painting with gouache. It's water based, like water colors, but it's got a higher ratio of pigment to water. It's opaque, and fast to work with, so a lot of background painters use it.
oh my goodness..... im getting so much nostalgia.
and thank you for sharing these demos~!

@renwaldo5 I was just about to ask the tech side of your amazing paintings! I'm a fan of your blog, so nice to see you working. Very inspirational.
I'm a student of classical animation at VFS, so you don't have an idea of how this is giving me a lot of ideas for my animated short. THANK YOU!
