  • these are the largest kind of gibbon in the world, there called the Saimang. there throat sacs amplify there loud calls for miles.

  • who's the layman who thought these were howler monkey's? I worked in Thailand at a wildlife rescue centre for nearly a year, and we rescued a female siamang gibbon, and she CERTAINLY had a throat sac. they are the loudest land mammal, apparently. they are gibbons (they used to be classified as a distinct species of ape, seperate from gibbons) and they are 'lesser' apes.

  • actually, they ARE howler monkeys. gibbons don't have throat pouches.

  • They are Siamang Gibbons. They are part of the gibbon family genus and are the only sub-speices of gibbon with throat pouches.

  • I remember I saw a pair at the Seattle Zoo when I went there a few years back, thanks so much for posting this. Their duet calls are amazing:) Powerful.
