He reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan or something during the rough attacks in coloraturas and high notes. Especially from 3:50 it's like Arnie flexing muscles, quite cool actually.
when he sings it seems that he always( almost) has hiccups. I'm a beginner of this kind of singing but to face agilities this way seems to be unnatural in my opinion.Nothing to do with legendary tenors
I think you're referring to his impeccable accuracy with the fast melismatic passages; he is probably the only tenor to ever accomplish this, so don't be discouraged if you can't get the same type of separation between notes, Mr. Blake's technique is beyond human comprehension.
Whatever, but just think to kraus, wunderlich, florez, no one of them do something like this, maybe thi kind of technique sounds ugly or blake is probably the best tenor of the 20th century...
To my ears Florez's coloraturas run much more smoothly and accurately than these of Blake. Besides I can't get accustomed to Blake's timbre, to my taste it is not beautiful.
tehen162: What you mean by "coloratura" are roulades, in which every note is supposed to be stressed, not slurred over like Florez does. I suggest you something: get your hands on a Rossini's score, then you'll have an idea.
Well you should pay more attention, then, and read Manuel Garcia. This is canto fiorito di bravura, not silly contraltino's glissandos. Each note is precise, with an overall electric and masculine effect. It is not about your opinion, dear.
This comment is below par, sorry. "You just don't know enough ... read more and come back"- written to somebody you don't know is childish and ridicoulous. Although I like being addressed "darling, dear" (not too varied though), it can't cover the lack of real arguments. I won't waste my time with reading such stupidity and personalities, so the discussion ends here.
I love Wunderlich and Kraus, but remember that most of the Rossini operas had not been performed for over 100 years until Rockwell Blake because it was too difficult to sing, and he was one of the best tenors of the 20th century.
All you have said it's fine to me, and nobody could say that Mr Blake lacks in technique, but what i meant to say is that i don't like too much his way to face agilities ( melismatic passages) which i find sometimes unnatural listen this aria at about 2:50. For the rest he is a great singer
Thanks for yet again another incredible video of Rocky in his prime! He begins with a light lyric, almost Irish Tenor lilt, and then progresses into a robust heroic tenor sound. The man is absolutely beyond belief. This one is truly priceless!

i agree with you, but we must say that he has a really good technique except for agilities which i find not musical at all
P.S. Watch the clip where he sings les hugonottes, there are 2 but in one of them he does something really really good at the end of the video

tehen162: it's staccati dude. If Florez sings it "smoothly" means he's being incompetent.

I compared their coloraturas "dude", not the staccato part. Read again.

Thanks for the advice, but I actually know several Rossini's scores rather well and stand by my opinion.

Don't overwork yourself dear. It's about opinions here. Mine is worth as much as yours. It's so simple.

No it is not about opinions, darling. You just don't know enough, as simple as that. Read more and come back.

Beyond belief is nicely put! I saw him in Nice in the Otello with Merritt and Cuberli: one of those operatic experiences you never forget! Unique!!
