  • It IS Gene Krupa. Incredible drummer.

  • This is a scene from the film "Benny Goodman Story" and shows Steve Allen portraying Benny Goodman. HarryJames is playing himself. The drummer looks like Krupa, but I cant swear that it is.

  • I was born in the wrong era. What great music

  • Three of the all time greats in swing! WOW!

  • Harry James Rules!!

  • Great video...Buddy is great but Gene is greater,in my eyes.Love him..,

  • No wonder Harry james had a rep with the ladies. It don't get much cooler than Harry.

  • Love this movie- saw it as a kid in the 50s. Benny Goodman was my favorite and my Dad's too. I figured I would grow up and either be the new BG or the new Mickey Mantle! Ha Ha. It was great that they used, Harry James and Teddy Wilson and Krupa and Lionel Hampton to play themselves.

People forget today that the 1938 Carnegie Hall concert was one of the greatest moments in 20th century American music - like having Elvis or the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Cutting edge!

  • This is one very "cooing" video. =p

  • Actually Steve Allen did play the clarinet in a small part of the film--at the begining when it shows the young Goodman playing the scales. Benny Goodman was unable to reproduce the "unique" sound that a clarinet produces with a beginner--so Allen was called on to play the scales to obtain that unique sound.

I can't find the link right now, but on YouTube is the Carnegie Hall recording of Sing Sing Sing--all 13+ minutes of it.

  • listen BENNY GOODMANN playing from 4:00 to 5:00 minute. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic. No better drummer than Krupa. Did anyone else notice a glitch in this film? There's a small section in which you hear Goodman's clarinet, but Allen isn't playing the clarinet in the film - just a little flaw. Best drumming in the world!!!

  • This video is a favorite on Sao Tome and Principe

  • it amazes me when I hear "swing" used to describe a modern half-baked pop music.... it's a joke right....

  • @lewstone1934 You are so right. Nowadays they don't know what Swing is or care. too lazy to listen to the greats like Benny Goodman,Harry James,Gene Krupa,Duke Ellington,Count Basie,Woody Herman and their great big bands.

  • the guys were tougher and harder than any heavy metal moron...

  • Do a funny fone call, Steverino!

  • 5170Adam, you are so right. The Trio's, Quartets, and Quintents, were always some of my favorite music to listen to over the years. But this here particular recording, the sound quality is so good, its striking. Listen to Krupa just sing with those tom toms, from start to finish.

  • Benny Goodman married a very classy high-society lady portrayed by the lovely Donna Reed. My dad back in the late 30's and 40's used to dance to that at the Meadow Brook Farm in N.J. Will Rosenberg, my father, was a top dancer.

That was one of the reaons my mom married him.

  • as is ElvisIf only I could wind back the clock and show these deluded Lady Gaga, Robbie Williams and all the rest of the manufactured dross fans what real music is like, but I can't but I can look at the comments from young people and take heart that there are, at least, some youngsters who are cogniscent of the fact that music is music and real music, be it Wagner or Goodman is real music, as is Elvis or ant other innovator, what did one reviewer say about Wagner, He is not as bad as he sounds

  • I saw Gene Krupa back in the 60's at a small club in Georgetown. Oh, my gosh for he was the coolest cat ever see by man or woman. Had tthe time of my life..

    Thanks for sharing that edward.

  • Asi lo recuerdo a Gene Kruppa tocando en el Cafe Metropole..en New York,en klos años 60 cuando vivia yo alla y lo iba a ver.-..

  • saw BG play this at the Paramount in 1943...boy am I old.

  • @rcpict79 I gave you a thumbs up but not because I think you're old!

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡MAESTROS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NO Wonder they called him King of Swing no other band could

Jive or make the ground shake from the sound they created

as Benny band did he always had the best side man & singers, arrangers!!

  • Krupa's solos in this song are credited with making the DRUMS A SOLO INSTRUMENT in a Jazz ORCHESTRA. The primo performance of this is on CD..THE YALE RECORDINGS... The Benny Goodman sextet: BG. H. James, L. Hampton, both Dorseys and the Master. Gene Krupa. Many say the "greatest jazz group ever formed".. Louis Prima never got enough props for writing this song.

  • This is what the big band era was about. It seems obvious to me that in this movie clip that Krupa and James were actually playing. The usual Hollywood sync-sound- over routine was not used. Harry James though not in his prime turned in a truly great performance on that second trumpet ride. Harry James was the master of the squeeze, slide, slur, glide, lightening fast triplets and of course that broad romantic sound to this very day is unequalled. Bravo Gene and Harry. Eddie in NY.

  • RUDIMENTARY TOUCH, MELODIC PHRASING, AND LOVE FOR THE GROOVE, THAT WAS THE LATE GREAT GENE KRUPA. TAKE NOTES YOU WANNA-BE DRUMMERS, THE MASTER SPEAKS THROUGH HIS STICKS, "GO GENE GO"!

  • PLAY IT GENE!!!!!

  • Great version indeed! It seems technology and time has sucked the talent from mainstream society. One could only wish for times when ability and groove like here will once again be at the forefront of our circus media. Merely adding distortion is not as gutsy or phat as the sounds from those horns. No massive stacks of marshall amps for these guys, just talent and oomph. Five star upload.

  • @hardballget It seems technology and time has sucked the talent from mainstream society.

NO, leftists have DESTROYED this once great nation.

  • This is real music, I first fell in love wth Goodman's music in the late fifties and have remained faithful ever since, kids today don't know what they are missing, but, then, I have come across a few postings from 14 or 16 year olds who really love this stuff so there is still hope, incidentally I was lucky enough to see Harry James in Southport, Lancs., with Sonny Page as drummer, wonderful memories.

  • I really like Gene Krupa's style!

  • I think this was the best of the big band leader movies that they made in the 50's. It had the best music and some great real life musicians in it like Gene and Harry. Gene is using a more modern drum set than what he would have used back when this concert took place in 38.

  • Thanks for sharing. I have never heard this rendition, LOVE it!

  • LOOK AT THE ASS HOLES LOOKING AT GENE TODAY YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME ASS HOLES BUT WHAT THAY THINK? IS MUSIC IS ROCK NOT JAZZ GENE WAS KING I SHOULD KNOW HE WAS MY DEAR FRIEND ....PHIL AMBROS ....SEE MR DRUMS ON YOUTUBE SINATRA AND PHIL AMBROS

  • from the movie '' the Benny Goodman story'' I love this version.

  • @edwardtrompastidas I love this version too. The soundtrack has alot more, including Stan Getz interacting with Krupa's drumming with a very driving yet ethereal feel to it.
