@morepl0x Knowing DOS commands was the craziest thing ever? It was NORMAL before Windows. I actually liked those times way better. People knew their shit. Not like today, everybody's got a computer but no1 knows how to use it for more than browsing the internet. The OS's are getting simpler and more idiotic every few years. I think it's sad.
I have an old Compaq 486SX 25mhz computer running Win95 that I've used every day at work since 2000. It is a print server in my office that shares 4 printers on our SOHO network. It still runs every day!
I tried Windows95 on Pentium 1 mmx 200mhz, 32mb ram, 902mb hard drive, ESS AudioDrive card and some 19year old 256color 640x480 graphic card :-D works
The first computer i ever built was a 486 66 with 16mb of ram and a 500mb hard drive. It ran 98 and i was 8 when i built it. It was slow and it died shortly after i built it
I remember running windows 3.11 for workgroups on 486 DX-2 66Mhz 4MB RAM then win95 and win98 SE (but with RAM upgraded to 16MB) on the same machine. It was running fast. I remember these days when memory was crazy expensive. I've spent $600 on a 16MB stick and $500 on 1.6gb HD. Today with this money you buy full setup with a nice LCD :)
It's way "snappier" than my i5 laptop at work with win7. Everything obviously isn't "oh so much better".

LOL I have the same computer, expect I have put the motherboard into another PC case.
I avoid putting a Windows 95 on a 486SX, I think Windows 95 needs more like a Pentium to be fully operational.

@1xWertzui works well on a Am5x86 (133) which by the way could be run as 160 and suddenly you could play Quake.

I had once worked with Win95 OSR2 - he tolerates working on i486 33 MHz, but not less than 8 MB of RAM, although running at 4Mb.

I tried running Windows 98 on 486DX 66 MHz computer. It was quite slow but usable.

Surprised it actually runs that well. Wonder if it would run on an old IBM PS/1 with a 12Mhz CPU that I used to have in the caveman days.hehe

@linuxguy2009 I believe that a 486 with 8 MB ram was actually listed as the recommended requirements for Windows 95.

Wow 500mb hdd on a 486 66? Didnt know they even made that big back then. Mine only had a 20MB hdd. thats insane to todays standards.

zummone 4 years ago
nightsky256 3 years ago
