  • as much as bas rutten is an awesome dude i wouldnt count on his ability as a grappler top take instructions from him he says alot of stuff that i dont agree with such as saying Side Control is more effective then mount (yeah right) and also saying that Achilles Locks is just a pain thing it doesnt do any damage ok bas sure whatever you say but ive seen guys get their tendons and shins snapped in half with achilles locks

  • Martial Art's kamasutra - complicated positions

  • Comment removed

  • this is my signature move in competition, but I make sure I have one or both of my legs (depending upon the situation) to keep my opponent from rolling rolling and rolling until he's off the mat.

Bas' demonstration is only effective if your opponent is not versed in leg locks.

  • @kilobravo66 have one or both of your legs what?

  • el guapo

  • i like this sub, great move

  • This shit shouldn't be taught without first teaching the control a martial artist should have.

  • @wadeuss That's why white belts don't usually do leg locks. But in any case if I'm competing it's the other guys job to tap, not my job to control the pressure of my leg locks.

  • @wadeuss I COMPLETELY AGREE, KNOW YOURSELF...

  • got caught in one last night...didnt tap soon enough.. and now paying the price. Limping along with a gansta lean

  • The defense Bas says is good to prevent a heel-hook yea, too bad it still leaves you open for a straight ankle lock that if someone cranks hard and fast you might tap too. The defense for that though is just sit up and punch him in the fucking face....

  • @jthetrackr So long as your technique is solid, you can actually adjust and lock up a heel hook and break his foot before he ankle locks you. Many systems teach the heel hook as a counter to the ankle lock. Especially from the 50/50 leg position when you're both ankle locking each other, the person who transitions and locks in the heel hook first usually will win.

But that's nothing concrete though when you account for technical capability, speed, pain tolerance, energy levels etc.

  • i wonder if it's much harder to do if your opponent has nike's on

  • @tropics1020 easier... mad grip!!! BRAPPP

  • "looki look what happens" :D

  • HHHEEL HHOOK

  • i just want to respond to the poster. the reason heel hooks are dangerous is because they don't hurt until they break. normally you wont even know it is on good until its too late. thanks for the post and keep trainin bjj

  • @loke2514 They hurt long before the breaking point if you have old man knees and ankles... But you are right ,if you don't know what is coming and don't tap out until it REALLY hurts you are in trouble like Pat Smith in UFC 1.

  • @digiprez77 What happened to Pat Smith in UFC 1?

  • @azarazar007 Ken Shamrock broke his ankle when Pat wouldn't tap out...

  • IMO the heelhook is the nastiest of all techniques in any martial art or mma. Knock out you get a concussion, sometimes pretty severe, you can get choked out, limbs or joints broken and other moderate injuries. A guy who knows how to heel hook well cranks it 100% you will be in severe pain, probably require surgery and be unable to walk.

  • Dangada Dangada Dang...Classic Bas!

  • Bas Rutten > Chuck norris

  • Christians pray to God, God prays to Bas Rutten

  • Bas Rutten is one of my favorite people of all time. Boy does he have some stories, "Once, I broke a guy's shin bone in half with my bare hands..."

  • merci Mr Bas...)

  • nasty nasty stuff ... love this..

  • now i know..

  • I like it when Bas explains these techniques.

So enthusiastic about destroying peoples bones

    XD

  • K so they're scissoring.

  • bas rutten is the most detailed instructor ive ever seen. He make certain to show that he cares about his students and fans. I hope to see more of his video

  • bad should do more of these vids, so much fun when he teaches :)

  • Do *NOT* play around with this technique without understanding the damage it can cause. Be VERY responsive to your opponent or training partner's tap. Heel hooks cause serious damage and can require a series of surgeries to correct. I know someone personally who got *completely* owned by a heel hook for being too stubborn to tap. It's his own dumbass fault, for certain, but he was HOWLING, and he's a tough dude.

  • @Lesardah when it comes to heel hooks no ones tough... its not like a strike ... submissions are amazing for that.

  • @SirFightsalot Great point, good sir. I still remember being a brat and watching Royce Gracie submitting guys twice his size.

  • ouch

  • I love heel hooks...

  • Bas = FUCKING LEGEND

  • oh my jah...this movement is terrible...too painfull!! cazzo fa malissimo!!

  • Extremely dangerous

  • @fallout2029 even more dangerous is the new people in gyms who learn this move and jerk the heel hook without warning

  • @A10pilot617 Yup, I've taken too many classes with dumb kids in them. Kinda why I don't really train any more. I know it's stupid, but I just don't want to give up a heel-hook position to just any random kid off the street. That's my knee you're dealing with! Some kids get cocky, think they're real great, and do stupid things some times.

  • @reefpirate not stupid at all... your watching your own ass/career, wreckless people can do some damage!

  • I fucking hate this damn submission. My favorite preliminary fighter in UFC, Tomasz Drwal, was submitted by this.

  • Hah..that guy is Iranian.

  • wow, normal heel hook doesn't work on me, i wonder in inverted heel hook will

  • ... LOL

  • I showed by buddy how to do this once and I was limping for a whole month. Never teaching this move ever again.

  • What happen exactly?

  • @godofthisshit I couldn't put pressure on my ankles, a sharp pain would shoot up my ankles when I tried to walk. It doesn't take a lot of pressure to cause an injury. Although I stopped limping after a month, it wasn't quite the same for some time. That area of the leg is very fragile and it takes a long time to heal. It can disrupt your training.

  • Super dangerous maneuver

not something to wield without fore thought

to what you can do to someones leg

i had a friend who knee was blown out sparing

cause a noob just decided to wrench his heel

try to be nice and show someone something

    and they just go overboard

  • That's how my friend is... he doesn't go light and show concern for injury. People like that, you have to hurt them really bad and then they'll think about injuries before going too hard in training.

  • @Krl246 I would punched his face in with my gimped out leg if that was me....

  • This is definitely a great submission to try. Liked the way it was executed.

  • I love it but it is pretty dangerous really good heel hook :) I am really pleased to se how it is done

  • I'm currently a GJJ brown belt, @ the academy in Torrence you learn to respect this technique no preassure is allowed. After this I understood why they arn't any leg locks in judo. I'm also a judoka (Shodan) currently.

  • Judo has been changed so much for the Olympics that it has almost turned into Greco with a Gi. Tradional Judo has leg locks and throws that use the legs wich are no longer allowed, you cant even do a firemans carry anymore!

  • True I agree with you. However the style of judo which I've a Shodan (black belt) Ranking in is Ju-Te Ryu Goshin Jutsu. AKA Combat Judo which is strictly self defense and practice Ne Waza as much as Tachi Waza so I basically just A'ced the exam when going for brown in Jiu Jitsu, The techniques are the same just a few diffrent names. Ie: Reverse Ude Garami is known as The Kimura Shoulder Lock. -Kind Regards-ChavaMMA

  • thanks man could never get hang of that submission tiil now

  • i got heel hooked in training by some idiot and how i can't walk for a week T_T

  • @superant14 fuckin dumb ass, not a sub to be played around with i hate guys that go balls out just cause they HAVE to win

  • ya i know what you mean... i had him in a kneebar and told him to tap before i even thought of applying pressure

  • I agree. I had a guy I was training with dislocate my ankle because he was discouraged that a person(me) that is a lower rank than him was beating him.

  • That sucks, Dude. Like most people here, I clowns like the guy who did that to you. But like the great Bas Rutten says' " I believe in two eyes for an eye." I have always subscribed to this ideal. Hobble into the dojo and while he (the jerk off) is stretching, take your good foot and land a heel to his jaw, using a strong hip toss. Then land about ten more. Once he's clearly unconscious, go home and rehab your ankle. I'm not kidding. A-holes like this keep everyone in danger of injury.

  • I always tell my students "No egos with this move." Get the lock, let your partner know and then start with something new. It's not worth the injury.

  • I have just got my brown belt in MCMAP and thats exactly how we caoch it and when doing acuall ambush drills in the wood we dont even allow the move. just too much potential to end a Marines carrier

  • did you see the Submissions 101 video on tapping 100 times? that was a great video by a GREAT black belt=]

    check it out!

  • Thats a beautiful concept. It gives respect to the art and allows the students to keep it clean. Honestly people dont want to go practice a self defense class only to go to the hospital right after a broken bone or joint or injury. I was also told my this trainer that joints when broken can also not work properly and stay like that for the rest of your life.

  • ohh I am in love with this move!

  • Bas is one fuckin beast

  • He always mentioned how he fucked up some Jap's shine bone during the competition. This guy is the best.

  • if ken fought bas today, ken would catch a loss,i respect the shamrocks but bas has the heart of a whole lions den

  • No Ken would destroy Bas.

People just judge Ken because hes shit now but back in the day he was the shit.

Dont forget that Bas retired 10 years ago.

  • or in one case i broke some bodys shin bone... (whispering) in half

FUCK ME SIDEWAYS THAT WOULD HURT

  • this move kills had it done to me in wrestling match nearly broke my ankle

  • Are you lying? There is no heel hooks in wrestling.

  • I'm never gonna leave the house again in case I meet some psycho that can do this horrible shit.

  • the trick is to learn it yourself

  • I can do it, wanna play? :>

  • most psycho's who would attack you don't have the patience to learn martial arts.

  • @jamesdin2 u mean el quapo :D

  • @jamesdin2 hahah!! you make it sound like youre gonna run into some horrible dark wizard or something.

  • @jamesdin2 i can do even WORSE :D and i am watching you right now...

  • Such a nice media friendly video LOL

  • I love Bas Rutten BUT I dont think I wanna learn leg locks from a guy that has been submitted with leg locks 3 out of his 4 losses. Sorry Bas, you'd better stick to Muay Thai training

  • That was when he has little knowledge in submission. Ever since his third and fourth loss, he learned submissions like a madman and won nearly every fight via submissions.. against people who specialize in them (including Frank Shamrock). He even beat some of the people who beat Ken Shamrock (Ken beat bas 2x early in bas' career), which kinda avenged the losses he had since they never got to fight again (Ken is busy in WWF). Given that, Bas is probably one of the best to learn submissions from :P

  • "I just broke a guys shin bone" lol Bas is great.

  • this exact move did me in and it wasn't even a competition! I walked all over my partner for like 2 hrs - really tired at the end - we were both in this position. I used submissions with applied pressure but he went for a BREAK 110%! Knee has never been the same since - hip either! I did not go for operation since I believe cutting is counter productive. Never seen the guy since. knee is about 75% since then. can't go as heavy on squats etc!

  • your ex-training partner is an idiot and an a-hole.

  • You should have tapped. No reason to push so hard during training but nonetheless, that guy was a douche for going so hard during practice

  • Junglelist

I wish it was like that... infact is was like second! I tapped after but that was after the fact. Hope others can learn from this experience.

  • I dont think he can tap in time in most cases for this move, because the pain does not set in for a while during the move. Bas used this on one opponent in Pancrase and Bas didn't know he just broke the guy's shin bone. The opponent didn't even know that anything got broken until he stood up for half a minute and suddenly fell cringing in pain. Whether or not the training partner is to blame for negligence, it can be hard to tell if the damage is done or not.

  • Thats not always the case. a heel hook can put you in pain quick. Ive been in em. some people can just tolerate it longer than others

  • Yeah i kinda avoid doing leglocks cos they cause serious injuries

  • well i love leg locks, and i specialize in them when i grapple, but when i grapple friends, i only avoid the heel hook, cause that causes the most damage, dislocates knee, breaks shin, tears ankle tendons...

  • saw it yesterday and aplied it today in class :P

  • you really feel this in your knees

  • if done right, you feel it from the knee down the leg

  • i wonder how many camras he had 2 break to creat these series

  • that dude bein heel hooked was in tuf ey....he got ko'ed hard by swick i think it was at the finale

  • Yeah alex got koed in like 30 seconds by swick.

  • Inverted Heel Hook=Brutal

  • Bas rutten doesnt cut his hair....he dares it to grow.

  • EPIC LOL :D:D:D

  • haha WIN

  • hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahaa

  • that's a good one.

  • Only secrets will tell. You have to check bas ruttens big book of combat.

  • At this point if you are caught in this the only real way to try to get out of it is if you roll with the hook placing you on your stomach and then try to push up and use your free leg to push out of it. I've gotten caught in a couple of these and that method helped me get out of it, but you have to be quick though.

  • tryin' tp roll out of a heel hook is scary... My suggestion is if you've gone that far and someone secures it just tap. The prospect of missing training for well over a year and having reconstructive knee survery stings a lot more than the ego bum by tapping

  • What if you have a huge ego? Just kidding. I agree, tap and learn.

  • Bas rutten does push ups without using his arms.

  • LOL how is he meant to do that?

  • cock pushups a la Tenacious D's Jack Black

  • The guy doing the inverted heel hook is doing the retarded Gable grip.

  • I fucking love bas. He's so nonchalant about causing people the most ludicrously life ruining injuries.

  • fuck yes!!!! ahahaha

  • I want to do this technique on you so you learn some respect for jiu jitsu...

  • too bad you're just a fat nerd sitting at your computer. ZIIIING

  • Yeah, totally, with this coming from the kid disrespecting people on youtube of all places

    lol

  • I'm scared of this move. I'd seriously tap out right after I feel the possition.

NO DON'T TOUCH MY HEEL! NOOOO

  • This is honestly the most painful submission I have ever felt. Even when it is applied for a split second, it can tear every ligament in your knee. I don't even apply this lock in competition out of mercy and respect to my opponent's career...

  • well, there are those jerks who perform this....still...

  • It snaps the achilles tendon, it breaks the shin bone and it disclocates the knee all at once.

  • Who was your anatomy professor in med school? Snapping the Tendo Calcaneus from a heel hook. Dumbass.

  • Nasty, vicious, and fucking awesome!

  • I'd rather be heel hooked than fall victim to a nasty toe hold any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

  • A heel hook crush your knee ligaments .

  • You're insane. Toe holds heal relatively quickly. Heel hooks can cause life-long injury.

  • true. bas rutten snapped a guy's shin into two with a heel hook

  • that ll probably hurt in the morning

  • :D:D:D:D:D

  • that's some nasty shit

  • does this hurt worse then the gogoplex or is thats how u call it

  • You mean gogoplata? Yes. A lot more. And the hurt stays with you.

  • uughhh i get all giddy watching that looks so painful

  • ....they dont actually apply it properly in pro wrestling....you do know pro wrestling is fake right ?

  • heel hook harder to get though

  • POLL:

what is worse, Heel hook or a knee bar?

In any of those two moves, if I'm ever put into it (or put someone into it ;) my instructor stops the fight, I don't even crank it.

  • Heel hook for sure. Very high injury rate. A knee bar is very painfull, but I have seen many aplied, none of them resulting in any injury

  • good job Amir

  • I would never do the heel hook.

  • Wow.. that looks brutal. I can feel my shin splitering and knee tendons snapping by just watching this video.

  • ah... the inverted heel hook... aka career ender...

  • heel hooks will fuck you up. i will never fight through a heel hook, i've seen too many blown out knees and injuries. tap tap tap > pop pop pop....tear.

  • Shamrock did this to Bas, 2wice I believe!

  • Bas Rutten was never put into a Heel hook.

  • Ken tapped out Bas with a move very similiar to this. Shamrock was really REALLY good at one point!

  • Shamrock tapped Bas with a knee bar. The video is on the web somewhere if you look hard enough. Bas was told that if locked his legs in a certain way that he couldn't be knee barred, obviously it wasn't true.

  • Ken is a good kid. I like to watch his earlier fights, and I believe the original Shamrock family is one of the greatest of all time! Marti... a Shamrock fam to the end....

  • It was a kneebar. The only similarity is that both are leglocks.

  • Ken did 2 heel hooks to Bas in theirs first Pancrase match,Bas use the rope escape both times,he was then choked twice ,with the final time Bas submitting .

Second time he was put in a kneebar, the one from the video in youtube.

  • and for a while in pancrase heel hooks were banned when bas was champ

  • Yeah, a heel hook is actually illegal in some grappling competitions! Its that damn deadly!

  • Deadly? I hope your just using hyperbole.

I think its more that no one wants to crippled for the rest of their life.

  • Ken did this to Leon...Blew out his damn knee

  • It's a demo.

  • hard move to pull of

but if you can get it

  • Bas rules, and that looks like a really good setup for the move too.

  • Ryo Chonan did the BEST one I have EVER seen.

  • Agreed, Chonan vs Anderson Silva with the flying leg scissors heel hook was one of my favorite moments in Pride fighting!!

  • Ryo is my favorite fighter from that weight class

  • i'm sorry no i'm not BAAANG

  • pop pop pop is right...one for each of the places you're leg is going to break.

  • hey gafflelator its common sense man

  • I can't believe they even show this move without prefacing it with a word of caution. Now every grappler wannabe will be trying this move out!

    Stupid

  • hey gafflelator its common sense man

  • gafflelator, I couldn't agree more! I just had my ACL reconstructed (not from a hh) and wouldn't wish this ordeal on anyone. i shudder to think of some kid out there fucking up his friend's knee trying this move thinking it's like an achilles lock...

  • Holy fucking shit. I'm just on youtube looking for some moves to take down someone who attacks me, or if I'm angry use it on my brother's, but that just looks fucking dangerous

  • yeah, they can damage the knee with minimal pressure....used to use them all the time in my shooto class

  • what i have learned from trainin BJJ if sum1 grabs ahold of your leg TAP IMMEDIATLY. im tellin u it dnt really hurt till it goes pop pop pop n then ur being carried off the mat.

  • exactly, atleast with heel hooks, straight ankle lock is usually easily defended, or my foot is flexible enough that it doesnt hurth..but i tap IMMEDIATELY to heel hooks.

  • Dude, heel hooks terrify me... especially since you get some fuckers who try to sink it in a bit more when the ref tells you to stop. Those can be career ending.
