Great gun I have the Marlin 336 XLR in 30-30, stainless/grey laminate. My favorite in my arsenal, fun, reliable, can hunt just about anything, and looks ballin'
Ahh the .30-30 lever action Marlin a great rifle. what more could you ask for? Great for firing on the range, for hunting, for home defense, and when it comes down to it a great weapon for surviving the zombie Apocalypse
Nice vid, thanx for making it. Just bought a JC Higgins/Sears Model 45 the other day for two bills and can't wait to kill some Knudsen milk jugs next week out at the range.....
I'm a proud owner of a Marlin 30-30! Mine was passed down from my father as a gift from his grandfather. Many a deer have gone down from it. I use the same raised scope configuration as you too, awesome for using the flip sight. I'd like to own a .45 lever one day, they are just so fun to sport shoot.
I prefer the Marlin over the Winchester due to the fact the ejected cassings eject out of the side of the rifle on the marlin. Where as the Winchester ejects out the top and When i had my 32 Winchester i had to have a side mounted scope.
The 30-30's a great round and it is damn powerful but it doesnt have great range nor was it designed to have any. That being said for deer hunting in just about everywhere but texas itll fare just fine. Another thing, 30-30's have a minimal kick to them for a hunting round. Overall good review though.
im not a fan of the 30-30 as a hunting rifle but i do have a lot of fond memories of them. my uncle (he has passed away) had a wichester 94 and i can remember going deer hunting with him as a kid. when i was a teenager i bought a 94 for like 50 bucks. then i sold it for 55 i think before deer season even started....lol. man that was stupid of me. thanks for sharing the video.
I just heard that Marlin is closing its factory and going out of business. I hope this is not a developing trend for U.S gun makers. Now for all those spare parts i have to buy. Groan!!!
nice gun, dude the marlin is a better gun by far, more accurate, better built, and easier maintenance plus i just like side eject.dont get me wrong the winchester is nice i own both but i wouldnt trade a marlin for a winchester.
i learned to hunt/shoot with a Winchester model 94 lever-action in .32WinSpecial that my Pappy bought brand new in '56. i love that gun, but my dad keeps it retired now, so i'm buying a Marlin 336XLR lever-action chambered for .35Remington. somewhat heavier bullet, a little more power, and shoots just as nice as a 30-30. when Pappy died, i got his Remington model 14 .35Rem pump-gun (made in 1927), and it still shoots great, but i'm retiring it to preserve it.
I like all your stories. My father gave me my Marlin 30-30 and because of that I don't see myself ever selling it. I'm taking it deer hunting next weekend for the first time, leaving my 243 at home (regretfully)
I have both the Marlin and the Winchester lever action 30/30 rifles. In my opinion, the Marlin is much easier to load and to mount a scope for. The Winchester ejects on the top of the gun making it difficult to scope. Also, my Marlin came with an extension on the right side of the hammer, making it easier to pull back with a scope mounted.
I Just recently purchased my 30-30 brand new this is an absolutely amazing rifle the detail in craftsman ship un surpassed Comes with a Birtch hard wood stock,Iron sights, right now i am curently shooting hornaday flex tip 160 grain ammunition it is a very smooth firing weapon and hasnt let me down GO MARLIN!!
I have the EXACT same gun except mine is newer, no scope, no pistol grip caps, A sling, darker wood, different serial number, peep sights on mine, and a lesser round count.
Ha, other than that it is EXACT. see for yourself on my little vid.
this is one of the only firearms i own that i would never sell my grandad gave me that rifle and i will never get rid of it. i would take this over the winchester. i have the same exact rifle different scope but that gun is a precision instrument the most accurate gun ive ever shot next to the 30-06 springfield
i just got this gun used and there is a problem with the lever and it will open with alot of foce but when u open it it wont shut what might be the problem?
nice gun mate, but thats not a weapon like you are calling it. a sporting firearm is never called a weapon, this is in australia any way, that may be the correct term in the US, eather way thats a fine rifle
so when a cop pulls me over, and asks if i have any weapons in my car i can say no, because its not a military weapon, its a rifle? hahah tell it to the judge asshole.
Yep they are great rifles. I just got done cutting my marlin 336 down to 16'' barrel, recrowning it,and just just got done tonight re installing the front sight(ie. drill, tap, etc). I liked it before but man is it more handy in the woods.....now I know I might catch some heat for this from some guys but...yes the 30-30 is great when I want to feel more traditional, but My Ak-47 is my go to deer brush gun..It has put more deer on our table, out to a 150 yards, than any of my other guns combined.
Your too modest about the rifle. It's evident in your tone. Too many people underestimate the lever action 30/30. If I was lost in the forest, I would certainly want my Marlin 30/30. It has put more venison on the table than any other rifle. It might not compare to other rifles in accuracy but its capable of downing the majority of game in North America and has a proven track record of reliability. I have a 30-30, but I wouldn't mind if my uncle gave me another one. ;)
Actually if you'll do some research and reading you'll find that that marlin 336 is a lot better gun than the Winchester 94. It's more accurate for sure. Better all around. The only thing about the 94 is that it's famous. Your Marlin is a better rifle. Nice uncle. Very nice birthday gift.
I read your comment on the marlin and had a couple questions, my grandfather recently died and i have the choice of getting a winchester 94 or a marlin 336s, they're both in good condition, both 30-30's, wich one would you get? The value doesn't really mean much to me, becuase i wouldn't be selling them anyway. just wanted your opinion because i dont really know much about oldschool lever actions, i'm more of a pistol or shotgun guy...
Well, that may be true, but I wouldn't trade my 94 Winchester for anything else. Much like this guy in the Vid, it's a pass down from my Great Grandfather (about 100 years old) & all original, no scope, no tap for one.
Anyways, where we live, the Winchester does just fine in no-scoping deer or other medium/small game. Mostly dense woods up here in N. New York State, so long range isn't really a problem. But yeah, if I were to hunt at a longer range, then I'd probably pick up a Marlin.
You've got an awsome uncle dude! Someday you'll be able to pass on your guns to your son/sons and if not to your nephew and have a story of family history to tell with them. We are blessed to live in this country!
I'm trying to find info on my rifle, but so far I've found nothing. My rifle is a Marlin 30-30 Model 30AW Winchester with a JM stamp in an oval on the barrel and the first two digits of the serial number are 12 and my front sight post is A LOT smaller than yours, I also don't have the diamond on the stock. I have so far been unsuccessful in finding any real info on this rifle and am constantly being led to the 336. Any info is appreciated
if you want wichester,we can trade.marlins action is faster, stronger.and i like it better,iv got one in marlin 2 but its 35,remington and i cant find amo for it
Quick question; does it take a little force to work the lever on those rifles. I'll see people shoot them, but they have a tendency to drop them down to their hips to pull, which I figure is just better leverage. Always curious to know...
my gramps just gave me one of these, brand new still in box from the 80's. cant wait to shoot it. also got a few mossberg's, lever action 22. palomino 402, model 190 16 ga shotty, and a 1903 springfield armory 30/06. Just took down all the serial numbers, and about to start cleaning them. where do i go to register these guns? and how much does it typically cost? im in California.
Lever actions are sweet weapons, so reliable. I have 1894 as a companion to my 357 wheel guns. but my buddy was just given an old marlin 30-30 and hes given me the task of adding a scope and checking out options for the gun. thanks for the vid.
Take Pride in your Marlin. Remember, Winchester went under not to long ago and Marlin is still around. I would still like to have one from both manufacturers.
Can anyone tell me how the recoil on this gun is. im pretty small (only about 140 lbs.) and i wanted something that wouldn't throw me back twenty feet
you'll be fine im 13 and can handle it and its really nice. by the way if the kick is to much, u can by low recoil bullets at bass pro shops or maybe cabelas and they really do cut the recoil in half.
Typically these shoot around 2 inch groups at 100 yards, and are considered lethal for deer out to about 175 yards with standard ammo. Not as accurate as an expensive bolt gun, but it is more than adequate for typical deer hunting. Hornady makes improved 30-30 ammo that is supposed to be good out to 300 yards.
I have a winchester 30-30 and a marlin 45-70. The earlier winchester 30-30's were awesome, but they kind of slipped up since then. I actually prefer the marlin over the winchester. Nice gun!!
they arent real expensive...my dad bought me the 336c about 6 years ago...new it was $320...they dont come with scopes, or scope mounts and are made to have open sights. The ammo they are shooting is a heavy, flat nosed (usually), soft tip bullet, and i dont chance a shot more than 200 yds with my deer. Overall a simple, efficiant gun.
Check in pawnshops, you would be surprised how inexpensive they can be. I bought a Marlin 336 in excellent shape for just $225 and a frien of mine found a Winchester '94 post '64 for $275
I'm sure the pointed ammunition he was referring to is the newest ammo made by Hornady. It's called LeveRevolution and has a polymer tip that will not detonate the round in front of it. Makes a great 100 yard gun into a good 300 yard gun.
Is that a model 336? I have a Marlin 3040 (NOT chambered for .30-40 Krag) which is the predecessor to that. Same caliber. The Marlin 336 is actually different from Winchesters like the models 1873/1892/1894, primarily because it has the ejection port on the side instead of the top. Having the loading port also on the right side of the receiver gives left-handed sho0ters (like myself) an advantage.
just bought one of these today. its one like yours, the cs model which i dont think they make anymore. very accurate even with regular .30-30 ammo. proud to be an owner of one of these.
I thought the 30-30 is an intermediate cartridge and uses flat point bullets and so doesn't have a long range. Is the scope useful apart from varmint hunting? Whats the range of this gun for hunting?
They make regular pointed ammo for the 30/30. I'd hit paper out to 300 yards with this rifle. I can't say it can go any longer because personally I haven't had to the chance to try it out longer that that range...
The flat tipped ammo prevents them setting off the primer since the rounds sit on TOP of each other in the the rifle's ammo tube. You'd have to be a fool to try pointed ammo in a lever action rifle.
They invented new pointed ammo with a soft tip that won't set off other rounds. Look up hornady leverevolution. Shoots much farther and more accurately.
I love these guns, like how they've got a real sensitive trigger. First time I shot one (in the local range), I pulled the rifle up, the thing went off before I could get the sights up :D
I thought it was a pretty good vid, gotta keep nice rifles like that in the family. I would disagree with it being TOTALLY modeled after the 94 since it has side ejection and Micro Groove rifling. The idea of the nifty .30-30 carbine was born with the 94 I must admit.
Best regards from Nova Scotia, that is one nice rifle, I am left handed and plan to obtain one of these fine rifles myself soon, I like the .303 British but I don't reload and the price of .303 British is getting really ridiculous. That was a nice story. :)
The same ballistics, um no. The 7.62x39 or 54 and the 30/30 are not the same. They're are both different weights, velocities, drop off points, and stopping power energy. They are very much different.
ok, i have a mosin nagant m44 and a yugo ak 47 and i wanted a good mid size game hunting rifle in either a .243 or 30/30 (just because of the cowboy effect)
I got the same marlin. Its accurate, reliable, and durable. I got 2 deer with it, and with the new hornady LEVERevolution ammo you can shoot out to 200yds accurately.
The Hornady Leverevolution .30-30 ammo is truly top notch. I tried it side by side with ordinary Federal Fusion 150 gr ammo in my Marlin, and the Leverevolution was MUCH more accurate and uniform. It also felt like it was hotter loaded. First rate.
A .30-30 lever carbine is so versatile. Not only is it a great sporting rifle, but you could do a lot worse for self-protection. I prefer a good FAL or AK-47 clone for defense, but a handy lever carbine is nothing to scoff at.
I agree, the 30/30 is a great home defense weapon as long as there is sufficient space and clear angle of fire to shoot. If it can take down medium game, it can take down a man.
They are weapons! They were designed to kill. When guns and rifles were invented they were made to kill or to defend. So, if you're nervous about it being called a "weapon" then call it whatever you want, but they are weapons.
Dude... it's not a weapon, it's a firearm... or Rifle. I mean, sure, it could be a weapon... but not until you shoot someone with it. Only people in the Media call firearms weapons
Great gun I have the Marlin 336 XLR in 30-30, stainless/grey laminate. My favorite in my arsenal, fun, reliable, can hunt just about anything, and looks ballin'

how much is one of this?

Lever actions are sweet weapons, so reliable. I have 1894 as a companion to my 357 wheel guns. but my buddy was just given an old marlin 30-30 and hes given me the task of adding a scope and checking out options for the gun. thanks for the vid.

beautiful rifle.

Ajswimmerdude 3 years ago
it won't throw you back 20 feet. just keep it in tight to you shoulder and you'll be fine. :)
godzilla74114 3 years ago
you'll be fine im 13 and can handle it and its really nice. by the way if the kick is to much, u can by low recoil bullets at bass pro shops or maybe cabelas and they really do cut the recoil in half.
poolpaul5 3 years ago
It is not bad, it has about 10 pounds of recoil.

great video! looks like an excellent gun i was thinking about buying one around christmas

Can any one tell me the max effective range of this weapon
echelon269 3 years ago
Typically these shoot around 2 inch groups at 100 yards, and are considered lethal for deer out to about 175 yards with standard ammo. Not as accurate as an expensive bolt gun, but it is more than adequate for typical deer hunting. Hornady makes improved 30-30 ammo that is supposed to be good out to 300 yards.
RAWKLOBSTAR 3 years ago
I believe that scope is a little too big/powerful for the 30-30's range. Nice gun though, I've got a Marlin 30AW myself. Love it.
unrest333 3 years ago
I have a winchester 30-30 and a marlin 45-70. The earlier winchester 30-30's were awesome, but they kind of slipped up since then. I actually prefer the marlin over the winchester. Nice gun!!

Kervyn, I own the same model..love it! real clint eastwood shit. And excellent safety tip on the carrier...

None taken. You have a right to your opinion.

i just shot this gun today. pretty nice
ARKELJ93PJ 3 years ago
they arent real expensive...my dad bought me the 336c about 6 years ago...new it was $320...they dont come with scopes, or scope mounts and are made to have open sights. The ammo they are shooting is a heavy, flat nosed (usually), soft tip bullet, and i dont chance a shot more than 200 yds with my deer. Overall a simple, efficiant gun.

can u make a cleaning vid? (cleaning barrel and lubing action) because i got the .357 version and dk how to clean.

Can't say I have, I will be purchasing a couple boxes and seeing what it's all about. Thanks

i've been interested in buying this same gun, what's the average cost without the scope
jondoethegreat 3 years ago
Check in pawnshops, you would be surprised how inexpensive they can be. I bought a Marlin 336 in excellent shape for just $225 and a frien of mine found a Winchester '94 post '64 for $275

I got a chance to shoot a Winchester 94 .30-30 the other day, and I loved it! very accurate too!

i have this same gun no scope my parents gave it to me it's over 40yr's old. soft point ammo for this rules!
Xbox360Playas 3 years ago
I'm sure the pointed ammunition he was referring to is the newest ammo made by Hornady. It's called LeveRevolution and has a polymer tip that will not detonate the round in front of it. Makes a great 100 yard gun into a good 300 yard gun.

Thank you and likewise.
kervyn 3 years ago
Is that a model 336? I have a Marlin 3040 (NOT chambered for .30-40 Krag) which is the predecessor to that. Same caliber. The Marlin 336 is actually different from Winchesters like the models 1873/1892/1894, primarily because it has the ejection port on the side instead of the top. Having the loading port also on the right side of the receiver gives left-handed sho0ters (like myself) an advantage.
IggyHazard 3 years ago
It is a 336.

you know if you was a right handed shooter you wouldn't need that safety measure so you wouldn't hurt your knuckles.
skittlekiller 3 years ago
sweet. ive been looking to get one of these one day. gotta love these classic lever actions
trykp 3 years ago
I thought the 30-30 is an intermediate cartridge and uses flat point bullets and so doesn't have a long range. Is the scope useful apart from varmint hunting? Whats the range of this gun for hunting?
tuberabban 3 years ago
They make regular pointed ammo for the 30/30. I'd hit paper out to 300 yards with this rifle. I can't say it can go any longer because personally I haven't had to the chance to try it out longer that that range...
kervyn 3 years ago
The flat tipped ammo prevents them setting off the primer since the rounds sit on TOP of each other in the the rifle's ammo tube. You'd have to be a fool to try pointed ammo in a lever action rifle.
Raidiusrocks 3 years ago
Lever-actions that use pointed calibers (like .30-06) have fixed box magazines.
IggyHazard 3 years ago
the new honrnady leverevolution ammo has a soft pointed polymer tip which makes it safe in a lever actions tube magazine
bigheadbillygoat 3 years ago
@Raidiusrocks
They invented new pointed ammo with a soft tip that won't set off other rounds. Look up hornady leverevolution. Shoots much farther and more accurately.

I love these guns, like how they've got a real sensitive trigger. First time I shot one (in the local range), I pulled the rifle up, the thing went off before I could get the sights up :D

dcroy99 3 years ago
I thought it was a pretty good vid, gotta keep nice rifles like that in the family. I would disagree with it being TOTALLY modeled after the 94 since it has side ejection and Micro Groove rifling. The idea of the nifty .30-30 carbine was born with the 94 I must admit.

Best regards from Nova Scotia, that is one nice rifle, I am left handed and plan to obtain one of these fine rifles myself soon, I like the .303 British but I don't reload and the price of .303 British is getting really ridiculous. That was a nice story. :)

hey bro i have a question, i heard that the 7.62 russian and a 30-30 has about the same ballistics. is that true??
bladerrunner422 3 years ago
The same ballistics, um no. The 7.62x39 or 54 and the 30/30 are not the same. They're are both different weights, velocities, drop off points, and stopping power energy. They are very much different.
kervyn 3 years ago
ok, i have a mosin nagant m44 and a yugo ak 47 and i wanted a good mid size game hunting rifle in either a .243 or 30/30 (just because of the cowboy effect)
bladerrunner422 3 years ago
i just got a 30a today cant wait to shoot it
dlite95 3 years ago
I got the same marlin. Its accurate, reliable, and durable. I got 2 deer with it, and with the new hornady LEVERevolution ammo you can shoot out to 200yds accurately.
rssx 3 years ago
The Hornady Leverevolution .30-30 ammo is truly top notch. I tried it side by side with ordinary Federal Fusion 150 gr ammo in my Marlin, and the Leverevolution was MUCH more accurate and uniform. It also felt like it was hotter loaded. First rate.
A .30-30 lever carbine is so versatile. Not only is it a great sporting rifle, but you could do a lot worse for self-protection. I prefer a good FAL or AK-47 clone for defense, but a handy lever carbine is nothing to scoff at.
classof77 3 years ago
Hornady makes great ammo that's for sure.
I agree, the 30/30 is a great home defense weapon as long as there is sufficient space and clear angle of fire to shoot. If it can take down medium game, it can take down a man.
kervyn 3 years ago
Beautiful Rifle man, always liked the 30/30 lever action.Like to get one for deer hunting, nice short action for heavy brush hunting.

trooperx666 3 years ago
Dont get me wrong... It's just that calling them weapons makes people scared of them :D
mellowc51 3 years ago
They are weapons! They were designed to kill. When guns and rifles were invented they were made to kill or to defend. So, if you're nervous about it being called a "weapon" then call it whatever you want, but they are weapons.
kervyn 3 years ago
no, they are tools. The mind is the weapon.
336W 3 years ago
Dude... it's not a weapon, it's a firearm... or Rifle. I mean, sure, it could be a weapon... but not until you shoot someone with it. Only people in the Media call firearms weapons
