Metro Police arrested Gary Chapman and charged him with driving under the influence. Police say Chapman was clocked at 49 in a 30 mile per hour zone. After they stopped him, police said Chapman smelled of alcohol & had bloodshot eyes. During the field sobriety test, Chapman fell against the vehicle twice while standing on one leg and registered 0.157 on the breathalyzer test (0.08 is the legal limit). Metro Police also found marijuana and a marijuana pipe in Chapman's pocket.
Thank you for posting this, I always loved this song and thought Jim was a very genuine person. I used to have a tiny crush on him, especially when he played "suave" characters like on Roseanne. My friends thought I was on crack, but I think Jim had a certain sexiness to him. R.I.P.
@InDeAskY1 true how can you not like jim varney yhey should disable the dislike button i grew up watching enerst and isstill one of my favs so i agree man we should find the hater.
@ethanreipold88 Right. I was about 7 or 8 when I first saw 'Ernest'. I'm almost 35 and Varney still rules! Not only did he bring back slapstick, but he did it even better. And, I might add, without being filthy. That's hard to do nowadays. I mean, I've seen 'Family' movies that had sexual innuendos and tons of foul language. How can they label those 'Family' movies? People from ages 1-100 can watch Ernest.
This song lifts my spirit when I'm feeling depressed. I just look at how brave Jim was when fighting his illness and it makes me want to fight my illness even harder. I can definitely relate to Jim's cancer. I know what he went thru as I am battling my own life threatening illness. But Jim gives me strength to keep fighting. He was a big inspiration in my life. You rock, Varney!!!!
@jvfunn3000 That doesn't mean you're gay. Jim had a way of making both men and women love him and all his characters too. Varney will always rule. He seemed like one special guy.
@jvfunn3000 You're very welcome. I know exactly how you feel. I know I'll NEVER say about another actor or actress what I have said about Jim Varney. He was the best & will always be the best no matter who comes along. I think a lot of these actors today could take a cue from Varney. They're always getting into trouble. They make watching movies a bad experience. Movies suck nowadays anyway. T.V's not much better unless I'm watching 'Dirty Jobs' or something educational. Even kid shows stink.
The lyrics fit the show & Ernest to a T. This show has a positive message that only Ernest could convey. No 1 wanted 2 hang around 'bad' kids & Ernest was the only 1 2 stick by them even when they ridiculed him. Eventually, he got thru 2 them by perserverence & letting them know that he believed N them. That's all these kids needed: 4 someone 2 believe that they were somebody. Ernest can uplift any 1. I have most of his movies on DVD. I hope I won't wear them out. With me, it might be possible.
I saw Ernest Goes to Camp when it came out in theaters at 5 then Saves Christmas at 8, Scared Stupid at 10 and Jail at 9. I've been a Varney fan, he was great in both Atlantis and Toy Story 1 & 2.
@Johnlindsey289 I grew up watching Ernest too and saw the first 5 movies in theaters and the rest on video. I bought the tv commercial compilation tapes, Dr. Otto and the Ernest Family Album special, recorded the Hey Vern, It's Ernest! show off tv on saturday mornings, bought the Ernest talking doll, which i still have, joined the official Ernest P. Worrell fan club and even got to shake Jim Varney's hand and get his autograph when he made a personal appearance at our local Braums back in 1984.
@TheAltair4 You got to shake his hands and get an autograph? Wow, you were fortunate. Was he really as nice as everyone says? Me? I believe he was a sweet, down to earth kind of guy but I never got to meet him.
@InDeAskY1 Yeah, he was an exceptionally nice and down to earth kind of guy. I was really young when i got to meet him but i remember it like it was yesterday. It was before he became a huge movie star though because at the time he was mostly famous for all of his hilarious Ernest commercials, many of which were for Braums ice cream and dairy stores, which we have here in my state. I remember him being a very warm and good natured man and i am so grateful that i got to meet him before he passed.
@TheAltair4 I remember his 1st Sprite commercial in either 1983 or 1985, I can't remember the exact date. I was either 7 or 9 & I was instantly hooked. There was just something real & special about him. At that age, I didn't know exactly why I was drawn to him but my gut feeling said that this man was different. Since then, I've watched every Ernest movie when they 1st came out. I remember 'Camp'. I was 11 & I just remembered, "Wow, I hope he makes more. He is so awesome. I just love Ernest."
@InDeAskY1 Yes, Jim was a very special human being and one of the most exeptionally gifted comedic character actors who has ever lived. His commercials and movies have brought an enormous amount of joy to countless people around the world and no one will ever be able to replace him. The world darkened just a little bit more on the day he died, but his legacy shall live on forever.
@TheAltair4 Well said. I've realized thru the years that 95% of Varney's movies had a strong moral backbone. In an interview he said that 'Camp' & 'Christmas' were his favorite movies cuz they "had heart". He may not have wanted 2 be pigeon-holed N2 Ernest but I think that was his true calling. Maybe it's just me, but I think he found greater joy playing Ernest than any other character. His eyes lit up brighter when playing Ernest than with any other character though he played them stunningly.
@InDeAskY1 Yeah, he did a superb job with all of his characters, but Ernest seemed to be the closest one to his heart. I can't think of a single Ernest movie that didn't have a geniune heart and soul to it and i love them all dearly, even Ernest Rides Again, Slam Dunk Ernest, Ernest Goes to Africa and Ernest in the Army, which are arguably the weakest entries in the series. Even at their silliest they are still quite a lot of fun to watch mainly because of Jim's immensely likable screen persona.
@TheAltair4 I have those movies. I've got 2 more 2 gt & I'll have all the Ernest shows. All the Ernest movies had heart but the non-Ernest movies like 'Snowboard Academy' or 'Daddy & Them' were, well, different. I heard 2 foul words from Jim & usually it won't bother me, but it did when Jim said the 's' word and the 'a' word. I just can't get it in my head that he said them. I'm not used to him saying those things. 'Treehouse Hostage' is really good. Jim does 'pull an Ernest' a few times.
@TheAltair4 P.S. I don't know of anyone else becoming famous just from commercials. I don't remember commercials of my youth except for Varney's. He made a lasting and permanent impression on my life. This may sound strange but I try to live each day the 'Ernest way'. It feels good actually.
I've been trying to find this song for years, you're awesome for uploading this. And yeah, it's really a shame that he's gone... He was an awesome comedian... I wish I could have met him. This one was my favorite movie of his (Ernest Goes To Camp), and this brings back memories from when I used to watch these movies all the time with my grandparents... (My grandpa's still around but my grandma passed away 2 years ago...) So yeah...

I absolutely love this very dramatic song! I looked for it for years and it is only available here unless you have this movie. I once wrote Gary Chapman and of course never got an answer as I wanted to know if he would ever release this on a soundtract. It would be nice to have a "clean" copy of it. Probably the only thing Chapman ever did that was this dramatic, and powerful.
a very fitting tribute to a great man/actor. he truly was a braveheart fighting for the rights of all the dreamers. god bless him, therell never be another jim varney [ernest]. thanks for the memories, friend.
Does anyone possibly know where I could find this song? I've searched old tapes, CDs, vinyl shops, and even with various things on the net to no avail. Any help would be so much appreciated!
Awesome Tribute! Grew up watching this movie. Jim Varney is one of my personal hero's. Did lots of good things for children with special needs. A truly great man.

Ernest goes to camp was my favoutite and still is my favourite movie of all time!!

Good job, I love classic Ernest and this song. It sounds like the '80s rock band Survivor to me, although Chapman has a deeper voice.
