What happened to the Puegot 905! Is it to old school for le mans, I liked the look of the 905 and the sound. It is a similar engine to the 908 but it roars louder than the 908. I agree the 908 is faster, but the 905 handles better. Anyway great video!!
the 905 is more than 15 years old, it would be tottaly outclassed by the rest of the prototype field. the 908 is far more powerful, more aerodynamically advanced and goes further on a tank. but yeah, 905 sounded much better.
F1 engines are no longer allowed at Le Mans. BUT... at maximum attack, it's actually likely that a 905 and a 908 can be relatively close on pace. Don't forget, a 905 is basically a F1 car with bodywork. The pole time by Philippe Alliot, in a 905, in 1992, was 3:21.209. This year, admittedly with some modifications to the track, the pole-position time was a 3:22.888.
I can't believe they haven't made any regulations against diesels in Le Mans after all these years. They certainly were quick to put a damper on rotary engines after the race in '91!
Rotary engines ALONE were not banned. It was FIA's engine regulation change, change from Group C (build whatever you want with a fuel limit) to 3.5 litre atmo formula... which pretty much started the downfall in general for World Sportscar Championship.
The Audi R15 TDI is a quiet machine (a silent killer, as I would call it). This 908 HDi FAP is even quieter! I would love to see this car win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright. Maybe even this year's Le Mans next weekend. Audi dominated this decade, but a Peugeot win would at least provide some reprieve from Audi's dominance.
Also, on commentary. Murray Walker is the only good commentator in the world because he did actually know what he was talking about, but made stuff-ups quite often, making races more exciting. It's a shame he's getting too old now...
That's about to change. Gasoline cars with be more competitive do to an approved air intake increase. I think it's going to be like a 30% increase for gasoline engines.
yeah I agree they're should be no commentary during the race, I mean for heavens sake most people who actually watched that when it was aired on tv had to pay to get a channel that showed it! and also I think the audio is not synched up correctly. there's when I hear him downshift but the vid shows the car accelerating
Enforce the same engine restrictions on these diesel cars and they would get walked all over. I understand the environmental concerns but it's a very cheap and rigged way of ensuring what looks better.
The speed on these diesel cars is unbelievable. They just obliterate petrol-powered competition. Unfortunately, they are so quiet! You get a standard diesel engine-note, which is quiet and ugly. Alas, diesel may be the future of racing (unfortunately). There are several teams that are running diesel cars in WTCC next season.
@deezomaxima right wasn't the point of the whole Le Mans series to test new technology for production cars (and make it competitive) the diesels are amazing i hope they continue to develop the diesels to the point were i can buy a car with a diesel that outperforms gasoline.
they come back after a 15 year hatius! now they have to try to come back superior again like what they did in 92,93.also they need to do more endurance testing in order to keep up with the Audi's.Basically, they rushed into this years 24 hours of Le Mans and skip 12 hours of sebring which was bad! Great video though.
I love this sound. It's magic :D

Will not happen. More combustion: better horsepower. It's not possible with normal diesel vs. normal gasoline.
