yes, they had got back together for this show, and then a few times after that..last one was 1998 at The Fillmore, San Francisco and one at Poconos in 1998
you're right...the song actually goes back to the mid 60's when Vince Wallace, jazz musician in Oakland first wrote it, then taught it to David in the late 60's. At that time, they were headlining over Deep Purple around San Francisco, so that's where DP got it. David used to attribute the song to Vince for the first couple of years in concert, then dropped it
in fact, the original song is actually a 'hard bop' jazz number from Vince Wallace converted to rock and roll originally by LaFlamme. It's on an LP from 1974 by Vince Wallace and is very hard to get. never released on CD
But all the remaining musicians of IABD admit the song is the original Vince Wallace number
Vince Wallace himself once told me the song is about TV shows in the late 50's and how idiotic they're portrayal of middle eastern customs and music was....Hence the name Bombay Calling
I just bought this album on itunes and couldn't believe the similarity of this and "child in time" by Deep Purple. Doesn't matter though I love them both.
i think the violin is an integral component...i'm not usu big on instrumentals, but this is one of my all time faves, along w/ embryonic journey by the airplane & albatross by fleetwood mac
This is the second song of Purple i know there is some em..influence...The other one is "Fascinating Rhytm" and guess what...which DP song it "influences" ?
Yes, Bombay calling hugely influenced this song. The riff is quite similar and the structure is alike, but not the same. But you can't deny DP turned it to something unique.
The musical approach of both bands is simply and absolutely different: the middle section of Bombay Calling is not powerful as Child in Time's. Instead, they do something more pshycdelic and has an eastern flavour -due to violins- that Child in Time lacks of.
My conclusion: both great songs, both great bands.
How can you not just love this and the great memories and times it reflects. Just brilliant. What great muscicians. Thanks for the video and thanks to IABD.

David LaFlamme is my Brother in law. It has been great at Christmas time having him play the violin at the family gatherings. He is great to be around (fun stories). His wife Linda is such a bubbly happy person. My husband his youngest brother was a roadie for him for awhile before I met him. I guess he had a great time...All the Best to you David and Linda you rock!!!
Hey, is this video available in anyway? I was at this show (Berkeley/78/Tribal Stomp reunion) in the front row, took many still shots. I remember the cameras filming and have always wanted to see the finished product. Still have the Freak Brothers program somewhere. IABD was the days highlight for me - sorry Big Brother, sorry Paul Butterfield...
try contacting David laFlamme. He has a website. I have a couple extra copies on VHS myself and I would be interested in getting any still shots from you, especially of IABD because I know some of the musicians and they would be interested..send me an email via bluoz (dot) com
David & Linda are great people. I ordered a Cd from a web sight not realizing it was run by them. The cd came autographed by both with warm greetings from Linda. My treasured item. I have loved this band from 8th grade & have never lost interest. David is a master musician.
This really is the original and Deep Purple didn't even give any hint in their albums that "Child In Time" is not their song, which quite shocked me...
They just made a great amount of money with the song and kept it all.
first of all thanks for the video, then thanks for the info!! just Googled it, you're right...I've discussed more than 30 years about this song with my friends...
I noticed the same thing many years ago but being from Kentucky I never met anyone else familiar with both songs. I think the Deep Purple version was a steal from them but to be honest I think they made it better. Deep Purple was an underated group too. Besides Smoke On The water, they got little radio play. Like Whitebird for this wonderful group.
froggyrainbow is right, to everyone who doesn't believe it: Deep Purple - Child In Time is just a cover of THIS song, not the other way around. In my eyes they stole it, because It's A Beautiful Day is nowhere mentioned in any of Deep Purple's albums wheresoever.
The story was that Jon Lord, the keyboard player from Purple , was going out with Pattie Santos from IABD and the two bands were great friends. Over a somewhat drunken evening, they ended up "swapping" two tracks - IABD gave Purple 'Bombay Calling' and Purple gave IABD the track 'Wring that neck' which became "Don & Dewey" if I'm remembering it right!
There was an early version of this one played by the Orkustra, circa 1965, in which David LaFlamme had as band mate Bobby Beausoleil (an adept to the Manson family); it has recently been published on vinyl.
nope..Patti Santos was not there on the advice of her attorney (the infamous name dispute with Katz). The lady singing is Linda Baker LaFlamme (Dominique), David's second wife who still plays that part to this day
The guy on the keyboards is not Fred Webb. That's Mitchell Froom playing who himself went on to produce alot of acts.
The song was written by Vince Wallace around 1960 who himself taught it to LaFlamme..see the BLUOZ link or search "Vince Wallace Bombay Calling" on Google
Guys - "Bombay Calling" and Deep Purple's "Child In Time" don't copy each other - they both borrow from some classical piece that doesn'y come to mind at the moment. Not the first time or the last that such things creaye confusion.
We all used to sit around (kind of like all the guys in "That 70's Show") and listen to "Bombay Calling", "Child In Time", and this classical piece that preceded it, back to back. I think it was by a Hungarian composer? 19th Century stuff. I love both CIT and BC, derivative though they may be they are great songs. Saw "It's A Beautiful Day" play in Diamond Head in Hawaii, at the Crater Festival once upon a time too. Good times...
I'm not into collecting anymore but I don't mind helping out. Whilst I still have a decent vinyl collection from DP and off shoots, I have a more comprehensive collection of early Dio stuff. If there's anything you'd specifically like and I have it, let me know. There may also be a website which now has all this and you won't need to bother me which people here can share.
Given Ian's key high vocals (Rice/Webber chose him as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970 after the 'In Rock LP with CiT on it), check out a higher vocal track with 'fighting man' on the 1979 Mr Universe album by Gillan (group now used his own sig as name/logo). Got his autograph in 1981 -- childish boast!
You clearly know about DP Auweia1-- my help was based on you being a notice.
In case you aren't too familiar with Ian Gillan's post Purple work, as opposed to just not having heard Ian's first post purple LP with Child in Time (CiT) on it, may I just add this -- also for anyone else that it helps.
I recommend Ian Gillan's distinctive post Purple innovative music. CiT by the IGB is on the rare but weak album called CiT. Cheap dolly and baby bricks on dark cover design.
I think rhythmblues1860 has a good point but others would disagree.
Auweia1. Are you saying you haven't heard the Ian Gillan Band doing Child in Time or even Deep Purple? I have the original vinyl versions of all these, (DP, IGB and IaBD -- the latter 2 being quite rare) but I can't get you good quality copies or soon, so try asking others first please e.g. nadjami, deeperpurple1952 or just request it, there's thousands of fans here and many will be happy to help.

also, alot of people don't know this but It's A Beautiful Day once headlined over Deep Purple here in San Francisco in 1968, just before their first hit with Hush. It's almost as though Deep Purple wants to acknowledge Vince Wallace, without actually acknowledging Vince

For those that do not know, this composition took over almost 9 months of Davids life. It started in 1976.
When "White Bird", the album came out, this was, and still is one of the favorites of all time.
This group, with David LaFlaame, was the very first to use the electronic violin.
And this song is just perfection.
