The people should have known that they couldn't afford those mortgages. If the banks lied like they did, and they obviously did, they must have thought that they were going to get something out of it. And they did. It's called the bailouts. In a free-market economy, those banks would have collapsed, the good assets would have been bought out of bankruptcy, and the problem would have been corrected WITHOUT wasting tax-payer money.
