  • Hi hopelessfisherman,

I'm glad you liked the stonefly nymph.....

I would be happy to list a few materials for you but first I need to know what type of fishing you are wanting to do so that I can help you as much as I can, also what video would help you most....

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail ok i live in northeastern ontario i plan on fishing for pike small mouth bass rainbow and brook trout also in the future i would like to fish for atlantic salmon steelhead and bull trout on the fly. now i have ordered the white river fly tying kit for trout you can look it up on bass pro shops to get an idea of what i will have and what else i will need i dont have a big budget so be kind to my wallet lol

    thanks brad

  • Hi Brad(hopelessfisherman),

For what I can see this is an excellent flytying kit, with the Dvd showing you patterns that you can tye by Lefty Kreh a world class tyer and fly fisher then I would say that you will be off to a good start. Practice with the materials in your kit first before you start buying in more as it's very easy to buy the wrong ones or even paying too much ...Let me know how things go when your kit arrives...

    All the best Davie

  • Beautifully tied fly, very nice, but it looks a bit too realistic, I like flies that look sort of vaguely like the insect they're representing. Just personal preference. Very nice fly though!

  • Hi Jeffdunham186,

I totally agree with you, I do prefer a fly myself to give an impression rather than being too life like...Thanks for you comment...

    All the best Davie

  • Far out... I wanted to eat it myself! Folded scud-back was awesome.

  • Great job!

Can you provide a source for the lead foil strip?

    Best Regards,

    Ron

  • Hi Ron,

I have sent you a link to the Scotch Tape 420, as you'll see it's not cheap but look around as you may find it cheaper...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi davie. I was wondering where do u get the lead foil as I'm wanting to tie up a few bugs for grayling. Also Would u be able to tie a few up so that I could get a basic idea where to start.

  • Hi stephenjapp,

I'll forward you a link to the lead foil I use and if you look through my list of videos you'll find a few good patterns worth tying for the Grayling...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie

Absolutely brilliant ty, really like the thin skin trick.. Folding it that way looks great well have to give it a go..

    Thanks for the Great Videos

    Chance

  • Hi Davie,

Thank you for another excellent video.I am a beginner in fly tying and only tried the pheasant tail and the hare"s ear.You are talking about a black olive in de video off the pheasant tail what is the material that is used for this fly and what is a great dry fly (and easy to tie) for a beginner

    Many thanks

  • Hi arjen1302,

It's simply dyed black and olive pheasant tail..I have a video on here with two of my favourite dry flies the grey duster and the lark and grey..I would also tye the f-fly which is simply a dubbed body of a natural or dyed fur and a wing of CDC feathers, use two to five feathers depending on the size of the fly..

I hope this is of some help to you..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Everyone,

I'm really happy that you like the Stonefly Nymph it's easier than you think and as well a good pattern to have in your box in whatever size and colour you need...

    All the best Davie

  • Best Stonefly on Youtube.

  • Excellent. Just pure excellence.

I've struggled to find a technique to get that look of the fly and that is the way I imagined it. you are a genius and an artist! :)

Also, thank you for all the videos you have posted, they have helped improve my tyings greatly.

    Many thanks

    David (CommissarNorval)

  • you're an artist.

  • Lovely tied fly there Davie as per usual!

    Keep the videos coming!

I have a question, if you don't mind. What would your top buzzer(s) be for around this time of the season?

    Many thanks!

    Best Regards,

    ~David

  • Hi David,

My first choice would be a black pheasant tail tyed with copper wire, red wire or the best silver wire, I would tye them from size 10s tp 14s..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

    Cheers for that! Much appreciated!

I'll tie up a few of those.

    Best regards,

    ~David

  • What a gorgeous fly! If it takes you 18 minutes, it may take me days!

  • Thank you again for yet another excellent video Davie. And thank you for the advise on the vices and tools. It turns out that one of the links you sent me is to a store (the bears den) that is 35 minutes from where I live. I went there yesterday and it's amazing. And so is the owner. I'm glad the Internet makes us all neighbors in a way. Thank you again

  • Hi Thegamerskeep,

I'm glad that I was able to help and also that by pure luck I found you someone that can help you and as well very close to where you live..

    All the best Davie

  • Superb! I know it's not one of "our" flies, but I really enjoyed watching those well considered techniques. There are some big stoneflies on the Welsh Dee, but darker, so same techniques, darker materials.

Thanks as always for another inspiring video!

    Alan

  • Hi Davie

    Kenny

  • What bridge is that in the intro Davie..Can you say ?

    Stuart

  • Hi Stuart(molley3268),

It is called Oswald Bridge which the River Ayr flows under and the pool below is called the Laundry Pool..

    All the best Davie

  • Where did you get the lead foil?

  • Hi 12ATM12,

The lead foil is made by Scotch Tape but it cost a small fortune I'll send you a link to it...ATB Davie

  • Another great looking fly Davie, thank's for showing.Steve.

  • Davie - your tying skills are probably the best I have ever seen anywhere in the world and this Stone Fly is a testament to your ability. Tying your flies is a joy, though they never quite compare, but do catch fish. I can't says thanks enough for all the wonderful patterns you have made available and the many great hours of tying enjoyment they have given me.

    Steve
