well davie i got my kit inn, and started tying and i must say you make it look easy but from one of your other videos i heard you have been doing this for 28 years. so you have a little bit more on me. so far i have tied 8 fly's mostly dry flys and a few nymph's i am enjoying every bit if it so far now i just cant wait till all of our snow melts so i can go try a few. but i have to add your videos have been a really big help i am glad you share them for people like us to see
It's now 29 years since I started tying flies and I still enjoy it as much now as I did then, as you never stop learning a great hobby..I wish you lots a luck and many fish....

WOW that looks like you cought a bug and shoved a hook thru it, great fly. now i havent started my own yet i have orderd a small tying kit and it comes with the basic's. my question for you is can you send me a small list of items that i will need because i dont know the lingo of everything yet, my kit comes with a few different feathers and 3 kinds of thread and a vise. all dull coloured. any help would be great. love the videos great insporation. thanks a bunch.
I would be happy to list a few materials for you but first I need to know what type of fishing you are wanting to do so that I can help you as much as I can, also what video would help you most....
@DavieMcPhail ok i live in northeastern ontario i plan on fishing for pike small mouth bass rainbow and brook trout also in the future i would like to fish for atlantic salmon steelhead and bull trout on the fly. now i have ordered the white river fly tying kit for trout you can look it up on bass pro shops to get an idea of what i will have and what else i will need i dont have a big budget so be kind to my wallet lol
For what I can see this is an excellent flytying kit, with the Dvd showing you patterns that you can tye by Lefty Kreh a world class tyer and fly fisher then I would say that you will be off to a good start. Practice with the materials in your kit first before you start buying in more as it's very easy to buy the wrong ones or even paying too much ...Let me know how things go when your kit arrives...
Beautifully tied fly, very nice, but it looks a bit too realistic, I like flies that look sort of vaguely like the insect they're representing. Just personal preference. Very nice fly though!
Hi davie. I was wondering where do u get the lead foil as I'm wanting to tie up a few bugs for grayling. Also Would u be able to tie a few up so that I could get a basic idea where to start.
I'll forward you a link to the lead foil I use and if you look through my list of videos you'll find a few good patterns worth tying for the Grayling...
Thank you for another excellent video.I am a beginner in fly tying and only tried the pheasant tail and the hare"s ear.You are talking about a black olive in de video off the pheasant tail what is the material that is used for this fly and what is a great dry fly (and easy to tie) for a beginner
It's simply dyed black and olive pheasant tail..I have a video on here with two of my favourite dry flies the grey duster and the lark and grey..I would also tye the f-fly which is simply a dubbed body of a natural or dyed fur and a wing of CDC feathers, use two to five feathers depending on the size of the fly..
I'm really happy that you like the Stonefly Nymph it's easier than you think and as well a good pattern to have in your box in whatever size and colour you need...
Thank you again for yet another excellent video Davie. And thank you for the advise on the vices and tools. It turns out that one of the links you sent me is to a store (the bears den) that is 35 minutes from where I live. I went there yesterday and it's amazing. And so is the owner. I'm glad the Internet makes us all neighbors in a way. Thank you again
Superb! I know it's not one of "our" flies, but I really enjoyed watching those well considered techniques. There are some big stoneflies on the Welsh Dee, but darker, so same techniques, darker materials.
Davie - your tying skills are probably the best I have ever seen anywhere in the world and this Stone Fly is a testament to your ability. Tying your flies is a joy, though they never quite compare, but do catch fish. I can't says thanks enough for all the wonderful patterns you have made available and the many great hours of tying enjoyment they have given me.

Hi Jeffdunham186,
I totally agree with you, I do prefer a fly myself to give an impression rather than being too life like...Thanks for you comment...

Excellent. Just pure excellence.
I've struggled to find a technique to get that look of the fly and that is the way I imagined it. you are a genius and an artist! :)
Also, thank you for all the videos you have posted, they have helped improve my tyings greatly.
Many thanks

Many thanks!
