I think this thing sounds very fat and dynamic in the bass region for a marshall. I'm a big fan but many times the low end is lacking (even since the jcm800).
TV volumes. The Vintage Modern is a PPIMV design so it works pretty well at low volumes. It does sound better/fatter at loud volumes though. Tahnks for listening.
@pajmanj Do it!!! I'm in the complete opposite spectrum as you brotha... got the dual rectifier going for the marshall now, but keeping them both!!! maybe a tiny terror too lol ;) \m/
Hey man great vid!! It helped me in deciding to buy this amp. I got the 100 watt (2466) for $900 off eBay. I boost it with a Zakk Wylde overdrive and it sounds awesome. Sounds great un-boosted as well. Great clean tones!
For Straters pot the tone knobs at noon. Detail above 3:00 and the Body less than 10:00. I no longer use the Mid Boost. I leave it out. Obviously this is High Dynamic mode. Keep the Reverb off. Pres and Volume as needed.
I really love the tones of that amp but I wonder if footswitching from the low dynamic setting to the high dynamic setting it features a clean sound and a distorted sound ?
because that type of sound can be achieved with a fender, or a vox. You really don't need to spend $3000 on an amp head and cabinet to get such a general tone.
@JIMMYJIBLETS This amp doesn't cost $3000, its $1300, combo is $1600 which is what a new Vox or Fender combo costs too, and when you alluded to Fender or Vox achieving the same sound as Marshall it became apparent you have no idea what you are talking about. No pedal or attenuator will ever turn any Fender or Vox into a Marshall, not even close with the best guitarist in the world. What style of music doesn't use a completely general tone? The great joke is that you can't name a single one.
Go have a look at my channel. I'm running a $3000 custom built Vox Ac30 in african mahogany, I'm not cheap with amps. I just realize that you don't need to run a Vintage Modern for boring generic pop punk. the most common amps among pop punk bands tend to be JCM900s for a reason. The produce "that" tone that serves the genre well. Also, I promise you that a Rothwell Hellbender pedal run through a fender bassman is very nearly indistinguishable from a Marshall 1959 live ;)
@JIMMYJIBLETS Expensive? For a tube amp? It sounds like you are just really CHEAP! A Soldano SLO is expensive, a Two-Rock is very expensive, how cheap do you want the guy to go? I can't think of a cheaper "good" amp that would suit a pop-punk band better. Are you really so cheap that you are getting uptight about what other people want to spend their money on? Please tell us what style of music would call for spending $3000 on a rig? blues? funk? country? metal? So why not pop-punk?
@JamesNiskyMusic saying "expensive, for a tube amp?" is the same thing as saying "mercedes, expensive? for a car? are you stupid?" the term expensive is relative.
go away and scream about amps to people who dont already spend thousands a year on gear, im not interested in what some anonymous nobody on youtube has to say to me. dont bother replying to this.
I'm sure it would sound fine. Billie Joe uses this amp, basically. He uses a Marshall Super Lead ("Plexi") which is basically this amp with less features and a higher price.
@sly but his is heavily modded. hes had tone caps switched and extra gain stages added. theses probably areny the best bedroom amps just because theyre so responsive to power amp output they wont sound their best unless theyre sort of cranked. even though it has a master volume knob a lot of his tones come from the actual speaker breakup. besides, on the new green day album, which all the songs he listed are off of, he didnt use his plexi. he used an old park head that he modded the hell out of.
@greendayrokr That may be true, but live, I'm pretty sure Billie uses his plexi. This is pretty much just like Billie's plexi anyway. This has extra gain stages and such as well. Either way, it's a fine amp.
@slysendice he does use his plexi live. this is a good amp. definitely not arguing that fact. but though this may achieve that great plexi tone, there are other amps that can get it too, while still being more versatile. i would get this amp if i had more amp heads to use for everything else, because this is pretty much a one trick pony, although its great for what it does. im just saying that theres gonna be stuff other than GD he'll want to play, and get frustrated that his amp isnt more versa
@slysendice tile. not saying in any way this is bad amp, and i would get it in a heart beat if i had an other amp with more versatility, but i dont, and im guessing BlankBrandon doesnt either. not a bad thing. just a hunch. thats the only reason i didnt get this amp. i decided to get a JVM because not only does it literally replicate plexi tones as well, but also is much more versatile. i absolutely love green day and honestly wouldnt have gotten the JVM if it didnt get spot on dookie tones.
For the VR record Libertad thats pretty much what he used. His signature Les Paul which is based on a '59, with Alnico II Pro's in it, and a Vintage Modern head. For his more classic stuff it was a Silver Jubilee or a JCM 800. If your going for his sound your guitar and a Vintage Modern head would be perfect.
They are a different type of greenback though....their not the same type of speakers as the Marshall 1960TV cab.... not saying your tone is bad it sounds really good but if you want a real greenback go with the 1960TV cab...
Hey man. Great playing :D Is the VM like a Plexi and JCM 800 combined? I heard that it is kinda like that. Any help on that would be great. Thanks and KEEP ON ROCKIN!
just go to an amp store take your guitar with you and try them all (i know you'll feel like you are annoying the people how work there but who gives a shit you're about to spend a hell-of-a-lotta cash) You want to make sure you make the right choice xD
It's not BETTER...if you really compared them equally you would have noticed that whaat VM lacks in versatility it makes up for in shear tone, natural cleans, and creamy leads.

very nice, amp. was thinknig about gettung it. but i just heard the Hendirx Stack, OMG this thing sounds liek crap compared to it. it sounds so THIN!!!

Why shitwhit kids buy pro amps to fuck around with in their bedrooms is beyond me, get a fkn pod if you aint playing live.
Can you tell me where the About This Video section is with your settings? I've looked all over the page but can't find that area with your settings. I just got this head a couple days ago, and that's the sound I'm trying to get out of it. Thanks!
The cab is the VM 4x12 with the greenbacks. reverb off, Bass at noon or a little less, mid 10:30, treble 3:00, high dynamic range, mid boost in, detail at 4:00, body 8:30. Now these are at lower volume settings.
Thanks...can I also ask you what guitar and PUPS you are using, and if it is a Les Paul or similar, are you using the bridge only PUP. Also, there was mention on an earlier post about putting a pedal before the amp...are you using anything like a Tubescreamer on this demo or is that the amp only making the sound? Thanks again!
I think I used an Inbanez RG 1570 with a Dimarzio EVO 2 in the bridge. I didn't use a boost in this video hence the unboosted in the titile. But I love this amp with a Keeley modded Bos SD-1. A stock Boss SD-1 is nice to. On the pedal keep the Gain low, the Level cranked, and the Tone around 1:00
Thank you for the response...I finally found the sound! I replaced the pups in my Les Paul copy recently with a DiMarzio Humbucker from Hell in the neck and a PAF Bridge in the bridge. The key for me in getting the vintage sound I was looking for was to push-in the mid-boost, keep the Dynamic Range in the low position, put the Detail at about 11 o'clock and Body at 9 o'clock and use the bridge pup. Of course, the Master volume has to come up, but now the KT66's are working harder.
this video was really helpfull thanx. but i have 1 question i cant decide between the 50 or 100 watt head please help. do you in what the are different
i tried a vintage modern in a shop 2day i think it was the 2466 but i couldnt get tht much gain. could it hav been that i didnt hav enof tym 2 play around wiv it or was it probly a different model?
yeah, im looking at it now, but, im actually in a band, and once we start doing gigs, i want a stack(even a half stack). i got another question, wen u bought ur vintage modern, did it come with the foor switches?
If people want it to have as much gain as the DSL its pretty simple to achieve with a boost in the loop, like the mxr boost, Marshall govn'r, doesnt need much of a boost to really
push it. whats good is you turn off the boost and you are back to that great Vintage sound that you cant get from the DSL.
if you like the classic rock tones get this slash is using it, acdc are using it just now in the studio, whitesnake are using it, joe satch is supposed to be using it soon and it nails the old 70's 80's crunch perfect if you like more high gain metal then get the dsl
dont buy a marshall if you want the marshall tone. Vintage moderns SUCK unless you can crank them, and the JCM2000 series is aimed more at high gain than marshall crunch. Look into splawn, or traynor
original Marshalls of the late 60's, Clapton, Hendrix sound, deeper bass than the 900 and with the "dynamic boost" and Mid Boost, it turns into a super high gain amp, i have never heard an amp so good, yes you could use
it as a blues amp with the Dynamic Boost and mid boost off, then it sounds like an original Plexi
how do you like the vintage modern..I too have a 900. is the vm versitile for a rock blues band? Does it have good low end and lots of mids? let me know
I like DSLs. Glad your digging the VM. It an awesome amp. The SD-1 with the Level cranked, Gain low turns the VM into a great 80s metal amp. I'm sure the VM would work for blues to.
how would this amazing amp sound with a Bad Monkey? thanks for the nice vid!

@yamahabmxer1 You don't. It's a one channel amp with two modes.

Thanks again!
bors512 3 years ago

May I suggest you set everything to 12 o'clock and add and subtract what you think it needs? This will help you find your own tone.

i tried a vintage modern in a shop 2day i think it was the 2466 but i couldnt get tht much gain. could it hav been that i didnt hav enof tym 2 play around wiv it or was it probly a different model?
SLASH10390 3 years ago
Crank the Detail but keep the body around 9:00. A Boss SD-1 will really help with getting a more overdriven sound.

can u get any volume from only the head? or must you buy the cabinet as well?
juan909s 3 years ago
u need a cab wih any head. the head does not have speakers, it is the brain, the cab is the vocal chords or watever.
Coyote10988 3 years ago
oh ok i c. thanx for the info.
juan909s 3 years ago
i 4got to say. u can also buy a combo amp which does not require a head and its cheaper. vintage modern has combo amps too just look it up
Coyote10988 3 years ago
yeah, im looking at it now, but, im actually in a band, and once we start doing gigs, i want a stack(even a half stack). i got another question, wen u bought ur vintage modern, did it come with the foor switches?
juan909s 3 years ago
If people want it to have as much gain as the DSL its pretty simple to achieve with a boost in the loop, like the mxr boost, Marshall govn'r, doesnt need much of a boost to really
push it. whats good is you turn off the boost and you are back to that great Vintage sound that you cant get from the DSL.

WATS BETTER DSL OR VINTAGE THX?
TheMJQ 4 years ago
if you like the classic rock tones get this slash is using it, acdc are using it just now in the studio, whitesnake are using it, joe satch is supposed to be using it soon and it nails the old 70's 80's crunch perfect if you like more high gain metal then get the dsl

thx
TheMJQ 4 years ago
dont buy a marshall if you want the marshall tone. Vintage moderns SUCK unless you can crank them, and the JCM2000 series is aimed more at high gain than marshall crunch. Look into splawn, or traynor

is the ds-1 a boss pedal?
GriffBrett 4 years ago
Well it's a Keeley modded Boss SD-1. The yellow pedal.

I do love my 900, but the VM sounds like the
original Marshalls of the late 60's, Clapton, Hendrix sound, deeper bass than the 900 and with the "dynamic boost" and Mid Boost, it turns into a super high gain amp, i have never heard an amp so good, yes you could use
it as a blues amp with the Dynamic Boost and mid boost off, then it sounds like an original Plexi

I finaly got mine in the mail yesterday
it just put my 900 and DSL into retirement!!;o)
lamschuchart 4 years ago
how do you like the vintage modern..I too have a 900. is the vm versitile for a rock blues band? Does it have good low end and lots of mids? let me know
peanutavalon 4 years ago
I like DSLs. Glad your digging the VM. It an awesome amp. The SD-1 with the Level cranked, Gain low turns the VM into a great 80s metal amp. I'm sure the VM would work for blues to.

did you find a geat difference in the a stack, and the b stack? (by the way, does the V.M. come with footswitches?)
-thanx
juan909s 3 years ago
Yeah. 2 buttons. one for the high or low dynamic ranges and the other is simply an on/off for the reverb which really isn't very good.
yngzaklynch 3 years ago
so which one has the 2 bottons?
juan909s 3 years ago
Just Bought one!! man im pumped!!
