blkequus, I agree with you about why they are called standardbreds. I am going of what i have learnt in the 20 years i have been in harrness racing and i am also going by what we have here in Australia and there are not alot of races over the mile
what kind of horses do they use for harrnis races(have never really looked into it) or do they use a certin horse i would think that they are a fast horse like a thoughbred but i am not sure
The Standard in Standardbred comes from the minimum time a horse must be able to meet in order to be raced on the track. They must be able to trot or pace a mile in 2:30 minutes.
@rellybelly123 As I said, they are called standardbreds because they are bred to race a standard distance. Each racetrack has its own qualifying time, most of them around 2 minutes.
@Janusmannen I believe you're correct and there are some people involved with the various state organizations trying to make that happen. But getting something done on a national level in harness racing is almost impossible since most of these people won't agree on what time it is.
@Horseloverkooder yes, its considered in a sense a "super horse" or a "monster horse " because it is so durable and tough. A standardbred can be in a horrible accident and land awkard, take a hard fall and race the next week as scheduled; they can race 2 or 3 times in one day as well as 55 times in a year
I own Black Cat Bone - during that race i almost threw up i was so nervous - i bought him when he was 4- he was a great horse- He is to old to race now - he is now a riding horse
I never really got how those people can judge distance between thier horse and the rider before them. Fairly awsome sport though, horses looked well on this track.
I remember back in the early 80's at Freehold when Jack Moiseyev broke a line on his horse and climbed on the back of the horse to pull him up, you could see Jack holding on to the horses head while on his back in one of the finish photos!!
@ftechone In the late 70s Tony broke a line @ lebanon and also climbed on the horses back, put his fingers through te bit and got the horse off the track. Most fantastic sow of horsemanship I have ever seen
tony wasnt getting money any way and cught the horse in open field. i was driving southern freight at pocono years ago, and billy mullin hollered up he broke both lines,he was sitting 4th and i was 3rd horses all around us. to avoid an accident i reached back held his horse save, and finished 3rd in the race for almost 1/2 a mile, the crowd gave me a standing novation, the judges gave me a suspension. Billy yelled at teh starting judge said i saved him from getting hurt bad!
Tony Morgan is on top of his game !! Hes great for the sport, no one wants to see a loose horse, it was great awareness by him to snag the horse. He made the owner, trainer happy by saving the horse from getting injured and saved the driver his racebike from getting messed up !!
Yeah, and it's people like you that are exactly what's WRONG with the entire racing industry. Nobody cares about how it's SUPPOSED to be - it's people like Tony making small changes for the better in the horrific blight of fucktarded rejects like yourself thinking you can treat animals like machines.
I hope you get kicked in the head you fucking tool.
look who gives a damm to wat owners or trainers think ok he could have saved a life thsat day if theat horse went in front of others then more injuires to both drivers or horses could have occured he was willing tto lose a race so tht no lives could have been lost thtt day
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah, and then the horse he is holding on to gets a fright, goes to kick up, clips the wheel of Tony's horse and they both go down.
One of the many scenarios that can happen, the right thing to do would have been for Tony to give his horse every chance to win and just let the other horse do it's thing.
I'm sure the owners / Trainers of Tony's horse weren't pleased with his actions, nor were the stewards.
Regardless of what he "should" have done (I side in his favour), he outright chose to show that there is still honest competition in the racing world... there's a huge level of respect they show for each other on those tracks, and a huge level of respect for the animals.
I dont agree w/ your statement, these horses race every week owners/ trainers will gladly get over 1 race to save someone else, possibly everyone else & their horses. when horses are loose on the track bad things happen & we all know it so no matter who is pissed be it betters owners or trainers, he made the right choice. the other horses trainer/owners grateful that theres still a few people left that would lose money & a start to keep their horse & bike from becoming badly injured or worse.
Not for tony I was in teh middle of the pack and both lines broke on Billy Mullins horse yrs ago, and i reached back and held the horse safe so billy or no one go thurt and I finished 4th and stayed 4th. at Pocono downs with southern freight teh grandstand all came out side and gave me a standign novation!
I remember Tony when he was first starting out at the Quad City Downs. Class act, and I wasn't surprised to see his name attached to bringing a horse back
That was really funny how the last two horses go past the wire, and the driver is leading the last horse! Ha ha! OMFGWACOT!!! I'm sorry its funny.....hope the driver that went down i sokay though! l0l...
I have met Tony as well. It is not the first time he has done that before. He has done it a few times before. He has done it a few times when he was racing at Balmoral and Maywood. It is a very nice thing to do, considering it takes his horse out of the race. Although in this situation he probably would not of factored in the "money".
Your full of shit. I doubt Siegel would let you drive him. And second you don't hit the harness. To bad your driving whip doesnt reach the harness. Yes some hit the disc and shaft. But most hit the horse. There is no suspension for that unless its excess whipping.
Source- A owner, trainer and driver in the standardbred business
Also we very rarely whip the horse. On occasion if they are not getting "alive" we will use the piece of yarn like material on the end of the whip to wake them up. Otherwise we 1. use are voice 2. strike the whip on the bike or the wheel of the bike if covered with plastic which most racing bikes are.
I am training to become a driver, there are no DQ for overuse of the whip. The patrol judge that rides in the starters car looks at that. If he or she see's unecessary use of the whip, the driver will get fined and or sat down.
I dont appreciate people who are uneducated in this sport telling me wuts right and wrong. Your horse does NOT get disqualified. If your horse makes a "BREAK" you must loose ground or else you will be set back. Plz research b4 u start arguing!

Bravo Tony Morgan. Madkukkii is correct to say this might have been really bad. Having been down in a wreck I can say it all happens so fast that it was an angel that enabled him to have the presence of mind to grab the loose one.
i wouldnt call that a sport miss xkate1717x i know everything about horse racing and as a matter of fact he did get disqualified for overuse of his whip i should know i had 5 bucks on him
Ive in this business for many years now. And no, he wasnt disqualifed. You simply got your money refunded which occasionally happens when a horse breaks. And he wouldnt be disqaulifed for over use of the whip he would be fined and or suspended
A harness horse has NEVER been disqualified for a driver using the wip too much! A driver named Harry Sowash was fined for whipping a horse after the race once though.

Also, glad both driver/horses involved didn't get seriously injured.

@Zach1949 In my day, 2;00 was STAKES time, not qualifying time.
1:59 or less was SMOKING. 1:56.4 was a track record, and 1:54 the WORLD record.
BettorOffSingle 1 year ago 2
@Zach1949 Actually it's the standard time itself that lends itself to the standard-bred name. The standard time that a horse runs for a mile.

@Zach1949 Each track?! In Sweden we use a national standard for qualifying times. :-)

@Janusmannen Sweden's a lot smaller than the US and the rules vary from state to state.

@Zach1949 I understand, but I still think you would be better off with a national standard. :-)
