@MrJohnboyofsj That's the idle gear. The engine spins one direction, the countershaft (or layshaft) spins the opposite direction. This layshaft is connected to the output shaft of the transmission, which will now spin the direction of the engine. By adding the idle gear within this process, the transmission output shaft will rotate in the opposite direction of the engine output (reverse).

@jonboyq23 The animation shows how changing gears with the stick moves the synchronisers. All of the gears on the output shaft are free to spin (except reverse) as they are not directly attached to the shaft. Only when the synchronisers attach on to a gear does it make a rigid link with the output shaft. Whatever gear the synchroniser is on, is the one that is transmitting power. The synchronisers make gear changes smooth by matching the rotational speeds before directly engaging the gear.

like the autor said, its a simplufied version, i know we dont se any synchromech rings, but is the basics of a manual transmission box. But the older version has only 2 axles.

the shaft he has is wrong, instead each little shaft/selector should go to a collar,and not the actual gears, this is because the selector goes to the collars and tell which way to go, meaning for drive i would pull back lets say, but it would acually go foward, its like a lever. btw your missing your idler for the reverse.

@yahavx First thing to notice is the ball under the shifter starts in the purple slot I guess this would be neutral even though it doesn't say. Then you move up 60 degrees to first gear and that angle forces the blue rod backwards. You're able to see that the blue disk connected to the yellow rod is now "linked" to the first orange gear. (i.e. First gear). Pull the shifter to second and the blue rod now releases first gear, and connects up to that SECOND orange GEAR. repeat, hope this helps.

You people are right. Standard transmissions are more fun, more efficient, and less expensive to repair, however more expensive in the USA (from my experience). The demand for standard transmissions is so low that it is not profitable for manufacturers to produce/import them without increasing the price. I blame the poor driver education systems here... We should hire some Finnish people to come down here and fix it. :D

Automatics are by designe better suited to drag racing or anywhere where a considerable amount of torque is required, due the the torque converters torque multiplication. Plus the fact that it can shift so much faster than any manual.

However on a track a manual is much better suited as a human can judge what gear is required for what situation. They both have their pros and cons.

@kaisa226 True that. But you don't really have control over the car.. How i feel it is that if you can do the shifting & handle all that power your a REAL driver. In automatic all you do is control the throttle & steering. Not much "DRIVING" there. Plus with manual transmission you can't be texting or talking on the phone. The world would be a much better place if all cars were MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

@WestLosHomiez also you forgot an important issue,with the manual trasmission you can get more power of your car, because you control when the gear change and you can make it when you want so you really can get the full potencial of each gear. The only good thing about the automatic transmission is that the car consumes less fuel. Anyway, I agree with you. :)

@ezequieltcd Instead of mashing on the gas in order to get up to speed, with a manual you have more control over when you want to shift, and can adjust the speed accordingly without having the gas so much. Also too when it comes to speeding up, instead of having to mash the gas to go faster with an automatic, with a manual you can downshift and use the higher rpms of the transmission and gas less.

Statistically speaking. I drive my rallycross car as my dd, so i always mash it haha.
