It wasn't that cheap, he finished the hit, that's it. Its the most severe punishment in Stanley Cup Finals history, given to a non-repeat offender. Rome is not know for his cheap play. Normally the NHL would consider that but I'm not sure what happened in this decision. Sure, it was late and his skates should not have left the ice, but when you're in a clutch situation, fueled with adrenaline, the decisions you make, have no more than a second to process. In all, I believe it was way too severe.

I work with films and not here to start an argument, but the replay in frame by frame in my editor shows that the hit was 0.9 seconds after the pass. Maybe Horton shouldn't have been admiring his pass and maybe Rome should have let up. It's very interesting watching the reports of this incident from the 2 cities involved... I can see an interference penalty, but I've watched the video many, many times and it did look like a legal hit. There was no head hit, although it was close. But, all in all, Rome gave a late, but not a dirty hit. The concussion to me seemed to come when Rome's head hit the ice very hard. I've seen worse hits that weren't even called in the NHL. Of course, that is just my opinion. (And, I don't like Vancouver or Boston). I'm a Penguins Fan!
Rome blindsided Horton and there's no way people should be worked up that he got suspended. I'm a Canucks fan, through and through, but I support any decision to suspend a player based on a dirty hit. The integrity of the game diminishes when a guy like Horton can't play in the Stanley Cup because a guy like Rome hit him.

@kjhannin well a hockey puck travels VERY fast and, even though he didn't get in the motion yet, Rome was planning to hit him. The rule in hockey is 3 strides, Rome took one.

@Ironriot11 The 3 stride rule doesnt apply to a hit after a player gets ride of the puck. The 3 stride rule is in place to determine a charge. A charge is not the issue here. but thanks for trying.

@TheSneakyBadger2447 If you follow tsn , they said that the League reviewed the time between the puck release and the hit which was 30 something frames which is one second & if it's under the "interference" Penalty it has to be 0-15 frames (half a second)

OK so if rome hit him lower it might have caused internal problems, nobody thinks about that , horton should feel lucky . I'm in Buffalo and this has happened to Tim Connely half a dozen times and every time he either had his head down or looking at his pass so i did'nt feel one bit bad for him.

That was obviously a late hit, Canuck fans are the worst fans out there they complain about everything. The reffing, the hits, missed calls and lot's more. They complained when Naslund was hit cleanly. When Mitchell hit Toews no Chicago fans complained about it. There also mad about losing 8-1 to the Bruins. The Canuck fans should complain about legit things like how there goalie cant make an easy save or cant complete a pass. The canucks are a good team but have bad confidence. GO BRUINS GO!!!!

I can see an interference penalty, but I've watched the video many, many times and it did look like a legal hit. There was no head hit, although it was close. But, all in all, Rome gave a late, but not a dirty hit. The concussion to me seemed to come when Rome's head hit the ice very hard. I've seen worse hits that weren't even called in the NHL. Of course, that is just my opinion. (And, I don't like Vancouver or Boston). I'm a Penguins Fan!

Rome blindsided Horton and there's no way people should be worked up that he got suspended. I'm a Canucks fan, through and through, but I support any decision to suspend a player based on a dirty hit. The integrity of the game diminishes when a guy like Horton can't play in the Stanley Cup because a guy like Rome hit him.
And, for the record, I'm saying this after the Bruins absolutely destroyed the Canucks.

The point I'm trying to make is that fans shouldn't be saying it was a bad call to suspend Rome; just take it as part of the game that he's "serving time" for what he did. Crosby's out and still not fully recovered and if there wasn't a hockey "double jeopardy" I'd say suspend all past hitters for the hits they've made. Regardless.

We were always taught that admiring a pass would result in getting creamed like Horton did. That was a clean hit, less than 1 second late. There would have been no call if he had got up.

But In Mike Murphy's address to the media, he himself said that the 4 game suspension was decided by the fact that there was an injury. So regardless of the hit, if a player is injured, the other team gets a suspension? And I'm willing to bet that the injury came mostly from him hitting the ice, not so much the hit itself.

Rome caused the injury by the cheap shot to his HEAD, forcing him to fall onto the ice head first. Thank goodness his neck didn't break, then the injuries could've been alot worse (paralysis or death). I don't care which team you like, that is uncalled for and dangerous. I'd say the same thing if it was a Canucks player head hunted by a Bruins player.
