I loved what James did for them over the last 20 years...but really, I think it's time for a new voice. I'dl like to see something alittle more up to date. While Labrie is a good singer, much better than me, I gotta say that for dream theater's overall sound Portney's voice was better. If he does end up leaving, which I highly doubt he will, then it may not be a COMPLETE set-back for the band. They've got an uber drummer, Jizz-tastic guitar player, and god-like bass player. Now imagine their sound with slightly darker singing and maybe some screaming to back it up.

On the early days of his entrance to DT they were going to fire him because his voice was terrible (listen to their early live cds NOT the albums) but after he took some voice classes he got better BUT still not that good to match the other guys musical abilities unfortunately :(

You might be referring to the fact that he got food poisoning a year later, and almost lost his voice for good. After that, he had to undergo vocal therapy for a while.
