This music nearly brings me to tears everytime I here it. Not just because of the situation during the film but having been on the ramp at Miramar and the memories that brings back and not being able to talk about it because no one understands the emotional attachment to the F-14 and what Miramar was to the Top Gun community.

@tomcatter11 I know how you feel. Except my memories are on the east coast.  When I was kid in the late 90's, everytime I went to Virginia Beach, I would see the Tomcats fly in and out of NAS Oceana nearby. Plus, I have an uncle who is an electrical/avionics engineer, who got the chance to work on the F-14 at the old Grumman plants at Bethpage and Calverton on Long Island, NY back in the day. That same "emotional attachment" was present both at Grumman and at Va. Beach as it was at Miramar.

@tboner12345 yeah, what you said does happen, but in the context of the film it is just a challenge that Maverick had to voercome. He had no living family and the only "family" that he had died and given the circumstances it would be easy for him to blame himself for it. The visit with death is part of the hero's journey in stories. The overcoming of this challenge strengthened Pete Mitchell as a human being and all of that jazz.

The guitar part starts when Mav pulls up to Charlie's house on his maverick and sees that it's up for rent. Btw, this song is nowhere on the soundtrack, even the extended soundtrack, so I have no idea how to download it. Perhaps it's on the original film score. I love that distorted guitar though. Mmm!!

I loved the movie too...and even had the soundtrack on cassette. Got it shortly after the movie went out. You're right that the "original" soundtrack didn't have "Memories" on it. I just purchased the extended CD and heard this song once again.  It really is a somber piece....but good.
