probably lowering the sound effect volume so that it wouldn't overall exceed the ambient/background sounds should work ... also play around with the balance or DolbyDigital surround settings/features to give a bit more immersive sound experience(sort of ... let it actually feel like how something moves across the screen when you close the eyes and listen to the sound)
Now thats some really nicely put together visual effects ... most of the sound effects hovever felt like there was a mic. strapped on to everything that moves which resulted in first-person-like mono-ish sound
