@chrisr291 120' temp in the car, plus hte 20lbs of fire suit equipment, you're also fighting 1 to 2 lateral G forces constantly, and upward to 80 gs in a crash. staying calm while driving 200mph for hours, and staying focussed enough to dissect what the car is doing in diff areas of the track, under braking, under throttle, into the corner, through the apex, out of hte corner, where can the car be improved? which end of the car is slipping first? which specific corner is losing grip, etc.

there's really too much to go into as to why they're athletes, they're under the most mental pressure of any athlete in any sport, they have ot process so many things in their minds about everything going on around them in the race.
