I had that EXACT problem in the closet behind my bathroom. The slumlord tried to say somebody spray-painted it. Who goes into a linen closet and spray-paints, very erratically. random stipes and splotches of black!? I had the house tested and it was mold. Never trust a slumlord. It could kill you.

Gross! Remember, home inspectors can not or do not go behind the drywall to see if mold is behind the walls. They are also not responsible if you find it after you take possession.
