In my opinion there is a difference between rap and hip hop, Jay-Z being an artist of the latter; but taking your point on rap, I'd have to agree in the past rappers have largely been overlooked as musicians in any sense. It is people like Jay-Z that are changing this with an eclectic range of good musical scope in his songs.

THey're closer to poets or lyricists, but as someone who has learned to play an insturment, as well as composing electronically, as WELL as rapping I know that at the very LEAST you have to *hear* what sounds good and that takes talent as well. There are incredible instrumentalists who couldn't write a song to save their life, so don't put too much emphasis on "musicianship" - it's not really the same thing as artistry.
