Mel Tillis was stationed at Kadena A.F.B. on Okinawa in 1952. He wrote the song while he was there. 20 years later. I was stationed there at Machinato Army Base. I recently spoke with a young Marine that was there about 2 years ago. This song came up in our conversation.
Thank you for posting. And thank Mel for writnig and recording.
I was a young 20 year old dog handler at Zweibrucken AB, Germany in 1973 when I first heard this song. All I did was to swap some words around. Went State Side in 1975 on schedule.
There are certain songs that one hears and remembers exactly where he was when he first heard it. I was a young Army MP on town patrol in Okinawa-this song will ALWAYS carry me back to BC Street, Gate 2 Street in Koza and the Futenma bar districts whenever I hear it! 62d MP Company (SVC), Camp Sukiran, 1973-1974! Rock on, Mel!!!
1964-65, 1st Cavalry Division, North Camp Custer, Korea, APO 24 S.F. This really brings back many memories of those days. AFKN played country late at night and we always wanted to hear this song.
It was Funny to watch those philipeno's sing this song , night after night..........and they didn't know eneough english to even know what they were singing !
On my first tour in Korea, when we got a chance to go downtown, the DJs would sometimes play this song. Nobody cared that there weren't geisha girls in Korea ... when the chorus came, a bunch of frustrated, half drunk GIs would belt it out with all they had - even if they were walking outside the door :).

I was in South Korea in 1973-75, at Camp LIbby (Pohang) as an Army Diver, when we could get AFRT's, this song was on all the time. And I heard it in all the clubs then also. Some things are timeless.
This was a popular song played in the service clubs on Compounds and Armed Forces Korea Network in the late '60s. Camp Jessup, Camp Casey, Camp Ross, Camp Howze, Camp Pelham just to name a few (2nd Infantry Div.) Walker HIll included. 2nd S & T next to Mun-San-Ni (village).
Good day. Please, can you send to my mail anpouch@seznam.cz Mel Tillis' (mp3) record "I believe in you"? I love this song, but I didn't found, where I can get/buy this song. If you want to send some song from me, type something. Thank you very much. František Dobrota
Got the original album that this is on. Would not take for it! Danced to it a million times. Mel always carried one of the BEST Western Swing bands around with top fiddlers! He made some great recordings with Bob Wills as well.
80-82 Camp Walker, Korea. This was the song when a soldier was headin home. Man, it felt like I heard that song every day there! Hell, I found myself singin that song the day I left there. Thanks Mel!! and of course, OldRebel25 !!
I heard this song a lot of times when I was on Okinawa [ The Rock ] . I was a medic and worked in the Army Hospital and helped there take care of our wounded. It was said that Mel wrote this song while he was stationed on Okinawa. I hope to meet him when we go to Branson Mo.
I've always liked this song, and know every word in this song by memory. I've seen this clip on CNN a while back on a program called Country Standard Time, which was narrarated by Jimmy Dean.
This is one of Mel's videos where he is dressed up in the sparkling suits and he looks very young. You know he was stationed in Japan during the Korean war. He is one of the best singers that I know of. I have had the priveliege i hearing him sing many times in Branson Mo.
This video brings back alot of memories of being overseas and dreaming of coming home. This is the first time Ive heard this in over 30 years, Awesome!!
I heard this song on AFKN in Korea in 1973-74 every day I was there. GIs requested this song more than any other, wanting to get back to "the world." It really nailed everyone's sentiments then. Thank's for the memories.
