I have done it both ways and I can put the fire where I want it by doing it this way. If things are kind of damp, I make a nest of tinder to put it in and then put it under the fire wood. The firesteel is glued to a piece of stabilized wood for support. That way you can use it all the way down and not be afraid of it breaking when you need it.. When things are real wet, I have to bring out the magnesium bar. :)

Ive never seen anyone do that before usually they scrape and throw the spark.
