This movie reminds me more of Universal's "Kharis" series in the 40s as opposed to their 1932 film. I know the '32 version is generally considered superior, but I just always found those from the 40s and this one more fun.
Along with the 1930s 'The Mummy', this is my favourite Mummy film. I am always uncertain whether I prefer this to the original slightly. For sure, it has stronger direction (no offense to Freund) and pacing.
Lol I have a movie poster of this in my room. At least it think it's this film. The uncanny... In his most startling role! It might be another but looks just like this one. Haha i wanna see it now XD
The guys they get to play the mummy are always to chubby !! They need a skinny guy like me to play the mummy ! I mean let's face it ,after you been dead thousands of years you are gonna be a bit on the skinny side right ?? But these guys all look like they been eating to much Pizza recently ! ha ha ha ha !!
@nicktesla45 I chose to cast a non-skinny guy for the mummy in our live show because he could carry around victims weighing between 105 and 175 pounds! Sorry, but if you can't pick up the leading lady...
@Demolitiondude Are you serious? Van Helsing is a character created by Bram Stoker, the writer of ''Dracula''. He has nothing to do in a mummy film. No, the character played by Cushing in this movie is named John Banning.
Does Chris Lee wear those silly band aid throught the whole film? part of the reason I like the Karloff version is because he walks around like an ordinary man.
I love the Universal Mummy movies (the original series), but Hammer had a way of updating them that really worked. They showed the Mummy's strength and how difficult he was to kill. The newest crop of Mummy movies were entertaining as "adventure movies", but this was a monster movie!
It's pretty a shame that Cushing passed away. I might not feel how sad Lee feels, but I do know that he's doing a good job distracting himself from the sorrow.
this was very well done by hammer productions-its as good as the 1932 version with more horror and graphics--christopher lee did a good job--thx for posting
My older cousin took me to see this movie when I was a small kid, and it scared the living doo doo out of me! I slept with the light on for 2 years! eeeeeeck
Don't forget Vincent Price,Lon Chaney Sr. & Jr,Boris Karloff & Bella Lugosi true masters of there craft original Count Dracula Bella Lugosi who was buried in his Dracula out fit showing his true dedication to that character.
Hammer used themes from the 1932 Mummy, The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, and The Mummy's Ghost. Christopher Lee was superb. He was both frighting and pitiable at the same time. He is second only to Karloff in the role.
Even by Hammer standards this film was pitiful. The Karloff Mummy out-does this one by 100%. Don't even bother downloading this one, unless you're intending to complete your collection, because you will be truly disappointed.
Google "Save Bray Studios Campaign". The world famous Bray Studios, home of Hammer Horror, is now very much under threat from them being turned into residential flats. Voice your opinion.
oh, the good old movies. I started to watch Hammer's horror movies starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee 1 month ago and now I'm completely stuck with them. lol
@TenderTrap86 wow, i'm glad to hear there are still people enjoying classic movies not goofs that they make nowadays, by the way, it's nice to meet you :D
@ovech... Please, tell me if in this movie the mummy grabs a man by his nose with a "clothes hanger"?? I remember that when I was a little kid my parents and I went to a hotel and in the TV was a scene like this (I think the scene was in a library or so)... I want to find that movie, so I will be grateful for your help.
I'm sorry but to me that's not very good acting. Those people could out run that mummy any day. My gramma could out run him!! I prefer the new versions.
in my opinion ! this classic stuff ! is so much better than todays computor stuff. i love this classic flicks.todays movies leave me flat ! compare , the remakes to the originals. time machine vs. 2002 remake, planet apes vs. remake, dracula 1932 vs. all remakes,etc... no comparision. they relied on acting and talent.
Dude, acting and talent is ok... But what do you say about the great special effects of today's? Well, as long they don't exaggerate them, as in 2012...
@wisinlover2002 i still love the classics. i am big fan of 50's,60's 70's, sci fi, horror.. todays stuff just doesn't do it for me. special effects are ok ! just not realistic. watch the original time machine or a classic universal monster flick. you will see what i mean.
It's not about how scary it is it's about atmosphere... at that time the filmmakers knew how to make good movies, better than today, because today without a computer they can't do anything... don't make fun of a movie just because it's old and you haven't seen it, watch a few classic movies and you'll unsderstand.
Don't worry, man. I'll pick the DVD up at the delivery center on the 24th and upload the movie soon afterwards. I wonder if some good Samaritan here will also upload 'The Curse of Frankenstein'...
I like The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, however, I much prefer the one with Christopher Lee. I grew up on this, and I was scared to watch it, but I loved every moment. Lon Chaney Jr. and Boris Karloff were great in the role of The Mummy. Personally, I much prefer a person over a CGI.
This is the scariest representation of a mummy I've ever seen... It aint a collection of CGI pixels like Brendan Fraser's mummy... The is a living actor behind those eyes... And it is this presence of something real that scares the living crud outta me :)
I wish trailers where still like this...incredibly dramatic music, an even more dramatic narrator, and a title that appears midway. I've always found them much more amusing!
There are few things I hate more than CGI haha. I'm only 21 but I'm so old fashioned...I'm all about 35 MM rather than Digital, stunt men rather than computer generated stunts, beautiful crafted sets instead of computer built backgrounds. *Sigh*. I guess those days are over...
easily the greatest mummy film of all time, Cuching was usually was a great lead that crediblity to the film and Lee was the most convincing mummy of all time and the costume was amzing partcilarly when you look at other laughable film monsters of the 50's and early 60's

lol christopher lee rocks but i have to admit the cgi in the mummy 1999 made it scary
i know you old timers think *fuck those fancy pants talentless crap heads*
but it takes talent to make cgi, for the mummy would be very difficult, most likely harder than make up(like in this video)
trying to make a 5 second cgi is bloody hard.
appreciate the effort people put in.
