There are many technical aspects of this movie I will over look, but that gun looks like just something they found in the props department from the Western movie they were filming next door. A more future looking weapon should have been a no-brainer.
@manuelherrera777 Actually, if you have to have a survival gun, a revolver is a very good choice. hard to break, never jams, easy to fix. And modern cartridges would work on Mars.
Can someone tell me if the damn monkey is real or not? I remember wondering that when i saw this as a kid - and seeing it here now I'm still not sure!!
It's a good movie, but with abundant technical flaws. Two of them within seconds of each other in this clip. First, the cross on the grave appears to be made of branches. Huh? Then, Mona's spacesuit -- not very practical as it has a hole in the seat for her tail.
@bus114 -- Yeah; Tho its one of my fave space/Mars movies, the many tech flaws ARE pretty blatant, esp. the silliness of apparently exhausting main spacecraft's fuel w/ a 'retro-fire' orbital maneuver (changing orbital plane requires accelerating or decelerating w/ main rockets, NOT a retro-burn which mostly changes aspect). And the surface crafts have NO effective guidance systems for safe landing & takeoff? And why are they so short of oxygen? They'd need at least enuff for 9-mos return trip.
The folks who produced this movie should thank Zuke05 for posting it. Now that I've seen it here for the first time(never knew about it) I plan to buy the DVD. It's a great movie. Really like it.
The air was too thin for a grown human male to breathe for more than a few minutes at a time (think the high points of the Himalayas). But the monkey has a smaller body mass and lungs, the amount of air would be enough for it, or maybe it had already acclimated to the conditions.
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this as a kid and just thinking how great it was. It was the most realistic things on space that I had seen. I think they made a effort to be scientifically accurate though as I remember even as a kid reading what I find from the school library, they knew the Mars atmosphere was largely CO2, low pressure, and damn cold. The first scenes with Adam West looked a bit like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Can a human being live on Mars? Hard to say since I've read online how the Earth's magnetic field protects humanity/life from radiation from space which can damage or kill cells.
@PantheraAtrox -- With enuff careful preparation, effective solutions for living on Mars are probably solveable with current technology, ie. combination of reflective radiation shields doubling as solar panels covering buried shelters or even cave-like tunnels, nuclear-powered or fuel-cell processing of ores or gasses to distill fuel & water, hydroponic food (ie, algae) greenhouses. A lot of challenges but there are many ideas & tested/untested systems that could be further developed.
The part where he's undressing the monkey is... Somewhat disturbing.

If I went to Mars, no monkey for me, it would be like all the time,
"How's the monkey?"
"Is the monkey OK?"
"Is he getting enough to eat?"
"Are you abusing that animal?"
"You are exploiting that monkey, let the monkey be free!"
So no monkey for me, let the monkey get his own ride to Mars.

And will somebody tell me why Mona the Monkey didn't require the same amount of oxygen that our hero required?

That damn movie (tech flaws especially) must have inspired quite a few of our best.

@bus114 Did you catch the fact that her 'suit' doesn't have a faceplate?
Heh.
Evilmike42 1 year ago
@Evilmike42 Haha you're right. That's an even bigger problem than the hole in the suit.

It was in heavy rotation on weekends during the era of the Three Great Networks (pre-cable/pre-sat).
And I loved it.

Agree, definitely worth it.
For humanity to survive it must "go forth and multiply' beyond it's birthplace, beyond the stars.
