I have transcribed this music, note by note, by listening and pausing the movie about 100 times. I perform it occasionally at our church's Halloween/All Saints Eve organ concert. Fun!
As a music major back in the days when I attended Campbell University, I can truthfully & regrettably say I never heard an organ major perform this wonderfully eerie piece of music (which surely would've earned a standing ovation). What's up with that? I recall my babysitter at age 4 taking me to see this movie when it played in Granite Falls, NC. I was so scared when Luther went up the stairs to discover Mr. Kelsey playing the organ. Ahh, good times.
That organ music scared the crap out of me back when I first saw this film when I was 12 years old in 1966, but I first saw this film at the Uptown Theater in Chicago which was GARGANTUAN and all those gargoyles staring down at me while watching the film only added to the scariness. Thank you Vic Mizzy!
All I can say is....RIP>>You were truely a genius, Vic Mizzy. How you ever wrote this, I'll never know!!! There used to be some good interviews from Vic Mizzy on here, don't know if they're still available, if some of you might be interested in hearing him talk about this and other theme music he wrote, like for Addam's family & Muensters (sp)?
& they used bon ami... yet the blood stained keys remian HAROL CARO SOLOMON!!!!! HOWLIN' thanx for this AWEsome blast o'my kid past... definite shivers o'fright at chicago's normal theatre first seeing this at age 7 or so.... :):):):)
One of my two favorite organ pieces; the other is "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" played by Simon Preston from the original movie version of "Rollerball" with James Caan.
I was 9 yrs old when my dad took me to the Drive In to see this , we were both Andy Griffith fans an Don made that show what it was. The Organ music was just great and scary when ur 9...lol...this should be required watching for 6th graders , Great Movie
OH HECK YA HAHAHAHAHA I remember watching this with my sister when we were kids and we loved it. Thanks for the post I'm gonna email my sis the link lol.
This scared the CRAP out of me when I was eight years old and saw that organ playing by itself. I refused to go to bed on my own and now I can see why. That is scary shit music!!!!!!!
this movie is soo funeee ..... that music scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.... they never could get the stains off of the keys up in the organ loft.... and they used BonAmi
This to me is the most haunting organ music I think I have ever heard. I remember watching this movie several times when I was a kid. That music still gives me the creeps at nearly 49. EEECKS!
I can't remember if they ever issued sheet music for this movie or not but it is not a hard melody to figure out. It's mostly chording and dischording. There are some instructional lessons for this piece on YouTube. Look up "How to play The Ghost and Mr Chicken" on this media. Good Luck!!
If you say it is a Wurlitzer organ, you have not been around theater organs and that would be a common thing for a novice to say. Hammond you say--(?)--you know nothing about organs!! It doesn't sound anything like a Wurlitzer and certainly nowhere anything related to a Hammond. It is a classic sounding Robert Morton played by Gaylord Carter in the Warner Brothers music studio which by the way is well documented.
@julianblonde Hey Julian.. You seem to know what your talking about here.. Do you know the name of the classic piece that is being played here ( i need the sheet music ) Thank you...
one of my faves when it came out. and the part with the eerie laughing just befor the first encounter with the 'haunted' organ and even now still gives me chills--and i haven't seen this in a while. i got the old VHS and the DVD!
This is one of the best halloween movies. using the Munster house was a perfect backdrop for this movie. I am glad that it finally came out on DVD. Next to Munster go home this my all time favorite. Love the music.
There is something really upsetting about this organ piece...I remember seeing this movie as a child when TGAMC was first released. Wish I could research this "music of the macabre"!!!!!! Keep listening!!!!
I always loved the ending when Luther and Alma are married and the organ starts playing the ominous spooky music but then goes into the light lively ending credits music. Vic Mizzy was great at composing musicl like this. Very entertaining and memorable.
Yes, Vic Mizzy (who BTW died last night) composed and PLAYED the organ music for THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN. He told me so in person. Seems the organist that Universal had hired could not play the foot pedals, so Mizzy did it himself.
I am 56 years old now and I remember that organ piece and learned it it 42 years ago and play it on any Mollar Pipe Organ I can find. Vic Mizzy I believe did play this piece as I am researching the movie now and will know exactly who played The Haunted Organ for the film. I have played Led Zepplin for years and this organ piece is the most played.
I love this organ piece, its one of the two reasons I ever watch the movie. The other is due to Don Knott's wonderful performance - I mean how can you not love Luther? :)
