I read a book about the last german executioner. He used the Guillotine till '49 and put to death a few thousand people. It was a very quick process, done in a few seconds and there were no botched executions. I get the impression that those to be executed seldom strugled when brought out of their cells, they just resigned to the fact that this was it Lethal injections may seem more humane than chopping a head off, but are actually not..
Studies have shown that the guillotine was not as "painless" as it was said to be. It's even been said that the head remains conscious for up to 15 seconds after decapitation.
@ihavtugo After the neck is cut down, it takes about 30-45 seconds for the brain to completely shut down - during which you feel pain ! Just because the neck is apart from the rest of the body doesnt mean you wont feel pain. Remember the study with the guy that did not have his 2 legs, and he always felt like he moves them only they weren't there..the brain in very complex and we still dont fully understand it..

You've obviously never done your research. It costs way more to execute somebody (court costs from appeals, security, etc) than it does to house them, feed them, and clothe them for life. So from an economics standpoint, we should either get rid of the entire american criminal justice system's protections against wrongful prosecution, or we could suck it up and pay our 5 dollars a year to house a killer. if you want to support capital punishment, don't use stupid arguments.

Okay, My birthday is in December and it's June 23, 2010 now. If I was made to be an executioner starting now, I would have one sad birthday. i disagree...the Guillotine has had examples of dulled blades only wounding their victims leaving them screaming in pain until a second attempt was made. the chair however has had examples in which it didn't kill its victim on the first jolt, but!! it certainly knocks the victim out completely with no sense of whats going on in an instant. the often used second or third jolt is merely to completely stop the heart.

I read a book about the last german executioner. He used the Guillotine till '49 and put to death a few thousand people. It was a very quick process, done in a few seconds and there were no botched executions. I get the impression that those to be executed seldom strugled when brought out of their cells, they just resigned to the fact that this was it Lethal injections may seem more humane than chopping a head off, but are actually not..

Just because the neck is apart from the rest of the body doesnt mean you wont feel pain. Remember the study with the guy that did not have his 2 legs, and he always felt like he moves them only they weren't there..the brain in very complex and we still dont fully understand it..

The UK justice system is a joke, either serve a very short sentence or serve no time at all, mean while the victims rights are thrown out the window. If not adopting the death penelty atleast adopt FULL life sentences, adopt the 3 strike rule.

You've obviously never done your research. It costs way more to execute somebody (court costs from appeals, security, etc) than it does to house them, feed them, and clothe them for life. So from an economics standpoint, we should either get rid of the entire american criminal justice system's protections against wrongful prosecution, or we could suck it up and pay our 5 dollars a year to house a killer. if you want to support capital punishment, don't use stupid arguments.

Very interesting program, The Biritish documentary on famous executioner was a excellent program also, nearly every single british executioner suffered from some sort of mental illness, and never lived a normal life, even the most famous one of all Albert Pierrepoint, he was such a perfectionist, but even at the end of his life would rarely ever talk about his past, a lot of them turned to drink and quite a few took their own lives.

i disagree...the Guillotine has had examples of dulled blades only wounding their victims leaving them screaming in pain until a second attempt was made. the chair however has had examples in which it didn't kill its victim on the first jolt, but!! it certainly knocks the victim out completely with no sense of whats going on in an instant. the often used second or third jolt is merely to completely stop the heart.

wat?! yu honestly think the death sentence should be brought back? people are still coming out of prison after 20 years inside and being found to infact be innocent! no way should the death sentence be brought back in because mistakes are made and someone innocent would end up facing brutal punishment for something they never did. its messed up

English subtitles at least. I couldn't understand one thing this guy was saying. I don't see how the interviewer could speak in english, and fail to understand that his fellow english speakers would want to know what's being said from others besides him, since not everyone speaks french.

The last criminal executed in France was a moroccan in Marseilles in 1977.
