It's interesting to notice, that Total Immersion Method has a similar drill. And yes, it teaches you to preserve balance while rotating. When you manage to do it flawlessly you'll notice the improvement in your speed/ease of propulsion.
In the instructional video that it came from it was described as a rollover drill, but I agree that it also is very helpful for learning to breath correctly and yes, very much more difficult than it seems.
From my perspective this is not a roll over drill, but a breathing drill instead. The difficult part is breathing and raising the arm at the same time while keeping body afloat flat. It is a great drill but is so much more difficult than it seems, especially in a relaxed way as popov did.
@1Delta I think I understand what a straight and narrow wheel house is, and why that would be good, but deep, is that literally deeper in the pool? Your post is a cool poem by the way.
@Elantry thanx for the reply. I'm a bodysurfer in Honolulu and watch Popov as much as possible. the way he relays his entry off his catch is a work of art.
YouTube Point Panic bodysurfing and you will see why Popov is a great model.
thanx. One thing I recently noticed is how deep his catch goes, and engages directly to his lats
with his elbows just holding all the water he's scooping out. and he's sprinting. tremendous coordination. really inspiring. love to see the guy bodysurf
lol where do you swim? I' am from Long Beach, and zipper drill is way different than the roll over the zipper drill has us taking our thumb and running it from our leg, all the way up to our arm pit, and then the side of our head. :) its a bit different.
Zipper drill is the action of the arm moving along the side of the body, the roll over is the rotation of shoulders so its perpendicular to the floor of the pool.

i never learned swimming from a teacher i just go and swim since i was 7 years old and am now 14 and am really fast and a very good diver its all about practice
this drill helped me learn to kick with continuity and swim while rolling. Is that the scope of this drill? Anyway helpful drill and nice to see it done by Sasa Popov

super narrow, straight line wheel house.
phenomenal. I think is said a swimmer's height was the only limiting factor in ultimate speed. but watching this guy is the clinic of clinics.
for one thing, he gets max extention and goes way deeper thru the wheelhouse and coordinates the last inch of the drive into the glide.
the guy was a scientist.

This drill is not easy. When I cock my trail arm above the surface, my head sinks. I have to let my arm lag to stay balanced.

@Polarcupcheck Ahhh, he doesn't keep the arm cocked overhead for more than 2 seconds. Started getting it last night.

Its all about technique, good catch and pull and least amount of resistance wins the race.
