I've never seen women breastfeed without a blanket or some other sort of cover-up. Perhaps women in the UK are more open with their bodies. Not saying it wrong, but perhaps more people would be accepting if there was some show of discretion/consideration to people that are not quite ready for such a shift in cultural norms.

In our society, the media only put breasts in a sexual context. So people have made association between breasts and sex. And because of this association, people think breastfeeding is something inappropriate. But so called “private parts” and breasts are all just another part of the human anatomy! Then us in western nations who have access to clean water and good food are nursing kids to age 8 and beyond? There's something wrong with this picture.

@politelypompous Actually I mostly agree on what you said, but as I am German, therefore European, I need to tell you that in my native country, first off, the department of chidlren and services, inclusive of wide awake Pediatricians, would intervene in a flash if they saw such unnatural behaviour, also, for nursing mothers, most any store any mall offers, discreet areas where this can be done, there will be a part 2 to my answer as we are too restricted for space here so look for it
@politelypompous Part 2 continued..so therefore there is rarely any public (busstop a.o weird places) where mothers will be seen nursing and if so, they will cover themelves and the nursing child discretly! As I used to work for doctors without borders I have been to multiple 3rd world c., the children there are nursed as long as possible for starvation reasons, however a lot of mothers won't have milk long due to poor phys. condition themselves...take care and thanks for supporting
@Sternlein4USA I can speak for Africa where I've been. When they have a new baby, they no longer nurse the older child. We've seen where the older child is malnourished but the mother wouldn't breastfeed because they think it's taboo. They'd have sick older kids and not nurse them when it would be beneficial. We'd also encounter ppl. who wouldn't eat various things as they considered them their ancestors but that's another story. Of course not ALL 3rd world nations are like that as you've seen.
@politelypompous What you have seen basically is what I was trying to explain...they unfortunatley also have no birthcontrol, and especially in Africa, which is sad, the birthrate is exploding, so it is absolutely like you said, they stop nursing older children, because by the time, that older child suffering from starvation, they have given birth to the next newborn and are nursing that one, and the same happens here...it is a very unfortunate and very unhealthy lifecycle!
Mothers should be able to breastfeed wherever they want. This is a right that is protected in most countries. Also in most countries it is illegal to interfere with a mother breastfeeding or to remove them from either a public or private place and is listed as protected in anti-discrimination laws. (This includes Canada, UK, Australia).
The interesting different is the US, where they're only protected in public places, not private.

You know I don't mind a woman breastfeeding in public, it's a beautiful thing and a natural part of life. People should be proud that there are still mothers who love and nurture their babies!

There is nothing wrong with the act of breastfeeding. It provides excellent nutrition and is a good way for mother and child to bond. That said, I think it is unrealistic to think that a woman can expose herself in public while breastfeeding and it be 'fine and dandy' but then to turn around and say exposing herself without a child suckling is indecent. While I understand the difference, the line is very thin. People need to be courteous of the mothers but they should be courteous as well.
Breastfeeding is natural and healthy; however I don't feel it should be done in public. All the mothers I know that breastfeed prepare a bottle of their milk if they are planning to be away from home for a while.

@TheRealMidori I'm not a mom so I can't say for sure but I've heard that breastfeeding is a great way to bond with the child and that's often a hard thing for adopted kids to do (bond with the new family). Plus, the girl is only 18 months, not 3 years old, and since she is still drinking formula, why not use breast-milk which is better anyway, if the baby will go for it?

this vid is years old as their is now a law in britain. you can't stop a mum feeding their child in public. If you try to throw a mum out rest assured you will be fined £2k. I've never seen women breastfeed without a blanket or some other sort of cover-up. Perhaps women in the UK are more open with their bodies. Not saying it wrong, but perhaps more people would be accepting if there was some show of discretion/consideration to people that are not quite ready for such a shift in cultural norms.

@Sternlein4USA I can speak for Africa where I've been. When they have a new baby, they no longer nurse the older child. We've seen where the older child is malnourished but the mother wouldn't breastfeed because they think it's taboo. They'd have sick older kids and not nurse them when it would be beneficial. We'd also encounter ppl. who wouldn't eat various things as they considered them their ancestors but that's another story. Of course not ALL 3rd world nations are like that as you've seen.

Mothers should be able to breastfeed wherever they want. This is a right that is protected in most countries. Also in most countries it is illegal to interfere with a mother breastfeeding or to remove them from either a public or private place and is listed as protected in anti-discrimination laws. (This includes Canada, UK, Australia).
The interesting different is the US, where they're only protected in public places, not private.

There is nothing wrong with the act of breastfeeding. It provides excellent nutrition and is a good way for mother and child to bond. That said, I think it is unrealistic to think that a woman can expose herself in public while breastfeeding and it be 'fine and dandy' but then to turn around and say exposing herself without a child suckling is indecent. While I understand the difference, the line is very thin. People need to be courteous of the mothers but they should be courteous as well.

@TheRealMidori I'm not a mom so I can't say for sure but I've heard that breastfeeding is a great way to bond with the child and that's often a hard thing for adopted kids to do (bond with the new family). Plus, the girl is only 18 months, not 3 years old, and since she is still drinking formula, why not use breast-milk which is better anyway, if the baby will go for it?

Im not against breastfeeding in public but what i am against is women actively seeking out the most public and obscure places to breastfeed. I mean whilst in a line paying for your shopping?? Thats ridiculous theres no reason they cant wait and find a more suitable place to do it.

It's really too bad that people are so unaccustomed to seeing women breastfeeding, in public. I hope eventually it's just the norm, so that nobody does a double-take, so that people walking by wouldn't notice any more than if it were a woman feeding her baby with a bottle.

I understand how stressful breastfeeding can be and that its worrisome to do in public but women can also pump their milk and bottle feed them in public if they are concerned. However, they shouldnt not do it bc of stupid women and men like in this video who say its wrong to do in public. f that

Its so sad to see the people at the mall giving the breastfeeding mothers bad looks. why is it inappropriate and not right?? these are little ones that need to be fed, its not like they're's a grown man sucking on a breast just 4 d fun of it.
it can very awkward for the little chinsese girl 2 drink from another woman's breast. might as well leave her on the formula now that she's grown & done without it

@craigthomasjohnson because we don't show off our breasts. when breastfeeding in public you show as much breast as one would see in a bathing suit. We don't breastfeed in public to show off, we breastfeed in public to FEED our children.

I would love to know if your new daughter has addapted breastfeeding yet and if so how she is getting on with it. I love the fact that you are so determined because i too believe that there is so much she can gain from nursing. I am excited to see the video that she has taken to the breast.
