Anderson has a much lighter voice than callas. Callas was (is) supreme in this role because of the dramatic power, musicality, and technical [vocal] perfection she gave it. This is definitely not a legendary performance but a very good rendition non the less.
@LeilogOpera I attended one of these exceptional performances, this was not in Pesaro but in Aix-en-Provence. I mean exceptional for the singers, really outstanding. As for the stage director, the audience kept shouting, laughing, booing (I have posted an audio clip here) This ridiculous staging and the reaction of the audience give even more credits to the performers, really professional and once again really exceptional for this work which is considered as minor (?) but requires top singers.
LOVE June - - brains and talent. Wish we had more singers like her today. HATE the production and the direction! God, doesn't ANYONE know how to produce opera anymore???
Love June, she is one of the few sopranos that really got me whilst listening to her live in the theatre. I think she sounds even better in real live than on CD. In a way she become slightly undervalued with other American coloraturas coming up like Swenson, not quite as good. June than started to sing some of the more heavier repertoire which was not always her forte, though she always gave magnificent performances.
What memories of a performance I attended with these 2 unique performers (not to mention the others). However, this was not in Pesaro as mentioned here but in Aix-en-Provence (France). An electrical performance, because of the singers of course but also because of the audience booing a lot the staging...
You are sooooooooo right, opera should have died with Callas. In fact, nobody should sing anymore after she passed away, we shouldn't even listen to music after she passed away. 0_o
@saverioorlando. Stop comparing everyone with Callas. Callas was awesome but she's DEAD!
Enjoy what you have. And June is GREAT here! Actually musically Callas is umparalleled. But June does an amazing job here and with a more pleasant tone than Callas.
al smalto, al core? try "di smalto, ha il core" june.

There's no point in comparing this to Callas. Frankly, after hearing Callas there's not much point in listening to this either...

Five stars to Anderson, 0 stars to the stage director. Was he/she an amateur?
